The Zoning Academy (Injustice 2 Edition)

Lol lbsh 90% of you are only zoners when it's convenient and top tier or at least made some what easy. I'll admit I'll include myself as one of those people...

Even the self proclaimed zoning God m2dave switched to a non zoning character in mkx when he realized it wasn't going to be pew pew easy like injustice
direct attack on me

so some thoughts so far ont he zoning / characters i've seen

Brainiac - not a zoner without gear. More like kung lao

  1. With the beam from the gear has op potential for zoning (unfortunately it's gear) with his ability to stop the drones and release them on reaction or at varying paces combined with the control the beam provides with the right speeds to his moves it could be fucking lockdown city. Dependent on how effective a lot of things, can he compete with from the deep and ivy shit with the the beam? Is the MB BEAM plus? do all 4 hits pushback? Does anyone care because gear is not tournament viable? Will his pew pew drone track or be easily dodge poopoo? Will he be able to spam ground laser thing and cover his gaps with trait?
Outside of the gear for tournament play-

1. he's 100% a footsie character and not a zoner, he might be really good if he has good frame data on normals, and if he can get the drones out quickly enough without being punished and if they track well enough.
2. His gameplay is interesting and he could have serious neutral control and really nasty crossup stuff or extended pressure. The only way i could see him hard zoning is if he is able to recover his drones fast enough and get them out fast enough to wear he can basically control the neutral and counter the opponent's ranged moves. highly unlikely he is a good zoner, possibly great as a footsie character.

Captain Cold - probably a snowball setup char

1. His ability to zone comes down to that overhead projectile thing , how plus it is and if it can outpace/outtrade people once he get's zoning advantage, as well as how decent his regular projectile is at full screen.

2.He may struggle with dealing with jumping/aerial mobility due to his normals / specials. and as well will likely have a hard time and get outpaced by zoning characters.

3. He may have strong keepaway vs very specific characters allowing him to get his trait and just dominate the screen.. It depends if he can get the ball rolling.

4.Definitely seems like a setup/snowbally character. not a hard zoner

Firestorm

1. Likely to be a pain in the neck. But not op zoner. Has the ability to heal, as well as fly across the screen to get away(though a lot of characters can deal with that injustice).

2.His projectile is very fast and mb will be great for trades because it's knockdowns. He can possibly slow people down his projectiles.

3. He may play the mindgame with his ground thing, where if he can mb for a combo, catch y ou on a read dashing with it and get a full punish. So he'll chuck his normal projectiles, and use that as a check or to blow up dashes. IF this move is really strong as well as good at full screen i can see him being a good zoner, but he is not the most intriguing to me.

DarkSeid: most likely a strong character. But maybe half of that reason is his ability to get very strong mixups for free due to his trait. Kind of reminds me of someone from injustice 1.

1. Will be able to contend in the zoning game with anyone but may not be the absolute hardest to get in on, he has aerial projectiles that hit hard and hit mid (MB) and cover huge ground . as well he has an aerial teleport. Basically he can punish the heck out of you for using projectiles against him on read with tp, as well as throw the aerial as a safe check.

2. IF he can hold the quan chi thing above his head for a while, that gives him redonkulous control for quite some time. Can really control pace and even just get into mixup game. kind of liek batman's trait.

3. may be able to just tp right behind you with kamikaze guy as like amixup from what i was seeing or free pressure.

4. Controls space well, but to me his strength comes from the mixup game couplde with traide

5. May be able to use explodey guy to cover his gaps and punish, can't place him though.

Green Lantern:

Definetely a better zoner, and a lot of his weakness has been kind of made up for. I'd keep an eye on that fucker.

Green arrow: op mb arrow and much more control with arrows

DeadShot

- SImilar to deathstroke imo, has such quick projectiels and the aerial projectile, will shut people down. May be easier to jump on, but may have stronger keep away projectiles. Looks to be strong. i wonder about his like aA game and normals.

Doctor Fate:
fuck i'm tired of this idk why i did this, but honestly, i worry about him getting neutralized by ivy and aqua's, overwhelmed by flashes and super mobile characters, but, i think if his kit works just right might be a force once he gets momentum.

Cowboy also said he would never use Shinnok. I think he is engaging in some pre-release downplaying.
Didn't play much inj1 but going into inj2 I'll be playing atrocitus, captain cold, doctor fate, and dark seid. I wont be a character loyalist this time but i will be a zoning loyalist.

Just a heads up, grandmaster POTH posted a recent video to display his majestic zoning with his Dr. Fate. Please check it out and leave a like to combat the zealots and their propaganda.

Beware my power.
So you don't build meter on block in this game, which is something I absolutely disagree with, but it makes zoning very powerful from fullscreen. You build meter zoning and running away while your opponent builds no bar navigating and blocking your projectiles

Interesting tidbit about not building meter, perhaps the day 1 patch will fix it? I cannot wait till 9PM tonight to get my copy. I'm very happy this game's characters can play to their archetypes. How do you guys feels the MB roll affect zoning as of right now?

I'm not even sure if my characters (kitana and BS Shin) were zoners in MKX but I really enjoyed the zoning playstyle on them. Looking forward to finding my zoner in I2.

I hate it. Not saying it shouldn't be available or whatnot, but there's almost no consequence in using it, so it's like you have to always be aware that they can use it at any moment. There shouldn't be instant recovery imo. I can't imagine how the non-Deadshot players handle it, but I have a way with my character.

Seriously?
Zoners will be fine with no meter build on block. And if you brought meter build on block into zoning, zoners would certainly be candidates for harsher nerfs.

It's 8 frames of recovery and considering the animation is the start of a dash and then the roll it's easy to punish

So you're "easily punishing" 8f recovery MB Rolls in actual match pace? I find that very hard to believe.
If you read the roll then it's very easy to punish. The roll can't be used on reaction either so they have to make a hard read that uses a bar and carries the risk of being full combo punished. It carries plenty of consequences and using it carelessly will cost someone the game.

Lol this sounds like some react to NW's 50/50 talk. If you're fighting a character with options, like nearly everyone in the game, you can't sit there waiting on a roll to attack. How you gonna fight Black Adam or Green Lantern or many people and sit on anticipating a roll?

With everything that goes on in the middle of a match, how are you "easily punishing" 8 frames of recovery on reaction while zoning? Not in the training room, in games. Ima need to see videos of you in a set with a zoning character consistently punishing 90% of the rolls against you to buy this bridge.

It's the same principle of baiting a teleport and punishing it. Is that really such a hard concept for you to understand? You don't have 8 frames to react. You have the start up of the dash, the roll itself, and then the 8 frames. It's really not that bad. Seriously teleporting is more useful to get around zoning since the mb roll gets clipped by projectiles all the time if you don't do it super pre emptive. It's not a bridge I'm trying to sell you. As it stands it's not as powerful as you think. If you change your zoning timing it's super easy to punish it. I'll record me doing it tonight
