Forum based sites like this are pretty much dead. That's all there is to it. I used to frequent a few years ago, and they're either ghost towns or shutdown. Very few still have a following with regular posters. TYM is probably one of the more active ones, otherwise it's ones that aren't so niche.

Everyone moved to facebook, twitter, reddit and latest craze of the month. I'm not a fan, but that's what happened. I think Ultradavid was pretty much 100% on the money with his post, it's mostly older players that were used to using these sites that really stuck with it.

For NRS I think it has to do with volume. There is around 100-300 members here with 1000's to 20,000 on the other platforms and let's not forget WB has their own forum with more members than TYM.
That's it right there.

I think you guys are completely nuts if you don’t think Tyler’s department keeps tabs on TYM. They made an entire iteration of the series based on what TYM wanted. If they only monitored reddit, every move would be a safe advancing 9f meterless armored launcher.
They probably do monitor, but just because something was mentioned here doesn't mean that it was added because TYM said so. More than likely it was something already on the table and with what other changes they made they added it in.

If TYM was their oracle, why aren't all the changes requested since launch implemented yet?

There it is...
I don't know why we need to even discuss 16 bits personal life choices on any fighting game forum.

I think that's why it annoys a lot of people. Why should any of us give a shit? It's like saying he's going to become a goth. It has absolutely no significance or relevance to anything. If you Wana do that go for it I'll call you whatever. I'm not going to congratulate you about it and everyone doing it on a fighting game forum is just annoying.

Get over here!
Y'all know how it is for web forums nowadays, they're way behind Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, & Discord. I miss them too, and I still come here sometimes to see if anything interesting is happening, but I know where most of the discussion is taking place and it's not here anymore. This is not a TYM or NRS issue as much as it is a modern internet culture issue.

I wonder what the median age is of people who still regularly come here. I bet it's getting pretty close to the big 3-0
I agree with this. And for the record I am 36 so I am contributing to that lol.

Seeing you equate transitioning to being a goth and misgender Stephanie in the same paragraph is exactly why we need to talk about it

Not at all surprising. 16bit notoriously hates this site. Has for a very long time. Then some trash cans started getting transphobic about her, which of course was dealt with, but the damage was already done.

TYM isn’t a perfect place. Not a single person on staff, as far as I’m aware, receives any sort of compensation. So we can only moderate in our free time. That’s why we have to rely on reports a lot of the time. It’s also why we have many moderators, to try and make up for times where certain mods aren’t online. But stuff still slips through. It’s not like there’s a schedule or anything, as I said, the staff is only available when they can be.

So with that said, I’m sure this is a big reason why they don’t reference TYM anymore. I’m sure they blame the staff, everyone does. It’s the easy thing to do.
Forget mods seems like tym needs PR reps

I have a question that may or may not be related to this thread: does cancel culture and PC policing diminish from the activity of this site? Does everyone have to watch what they say in order to not be negatively doxxed? These forums (not necessarily TYM) could be cancerous, shit-talking cesspools. Does the risk of getting involved in spats on these forums potentially turn traffic away?

I see a new trend towards monetization and that requires content creators to curate their personas to something that has wide acceptance. We used to come to these forums for new tech and strategy. Now you go to YouTube and Twitch for clicks and ad revenue from the very same contributors. Is this more nuanced than a simple lack of interest? Just thinking out loud...

All I know is we want to be welcoming to everyone here on TYM. Well, welcoming to an extent. Bigotry of any kind isn’t welcomed here. But as I’ve said, it’s impossible for the staff to catch everything. I don’t even know all the bigoted and/or discriminatory lingo. Had no idea what a “TERF” even was until recently. There was someone using racist language towards Jewish people a few months ago and I didn’t even know what they were talking about. They were quickly permabanned as soon as I found out what they were saying.

To @KingHippo, I have no idea which mod had that in their signature. I can’t see signatures on mobile unless I go to profiles. And I don’t see anyone with that as of now. But I will say I’ve made a point to the staff that TYM needs to be vigilant and have a zero tolerance policy on bigotry and discrimination.

Yeah alright I am going to call bullshit on this too. First of all you literally just misgendered her. There is an edit button for a reason go fix it. But your opinion of trans people here is honestly just pretty misinformed so my suggestion is maybe take some time and listen to some transgender people because I am no expert. That being said, calling it just like she is becoming goth is just simply not the case and really undercuts the emotional and mental toll things like gender dysphoria cause. And on top of that the social pressure and actual vitriol thrown at transgender people is nothing like just starting to become goth is. I mean transgender women, particularly transgender women of color, are murdered for just existing. That kind of stuff is part of the reason why being publicly supportive is important.

Even on a fighting game forum. Because the FGC is supposed to be just that - a community. Yeah it is a problem that the actual game discussion here has really gone downhill over the years. But at least from my perspective also a lot of the problem is that honestly a lot of the people on this forum are just mean shitty people. Look at the genuine hate constantly thrown Crimsonshadow's way - even if you disagree with him on some things the idea that he hasn't put hours and hours, money, and a whole lot more into this community is nonsense. He has and is somebody really valuable. That level of vitriol combined with ignorance like in your post I am replying to I am sure makes it really scary for someone who is transgender or nonbinary or any other marginalized identity to come and take part in it. And that sucks because those people have a lot of really valuable things to add to this community. If you even want to put it back into specifically gameplay (although I really resent the idea of doing this because it could imply that the validity of someone's identity could be related to their skill or productivity or whatever - that is not what I want to say here) two of the NRS best players of all time are transgender and nonbinary - Stephanie and Sonic fox. This stuff matters because it affects the people who really love the games we play and we should want to be supportive of those people.

Yeah this really does suck and unfortunately the constant changing of lingo is a deliberate strategy by bigots because they are hoping we can't keep up. A lot of TERFs call themselves "Gender Critical" now and try to claim that TERF is a slur - it is all smoke and mirrors to make it harder to do jobs like moderate a forum like this. That is why I am probably annoying a lot of people with my posts in this thread - I think a lot of this stuff does need to be discussed out in the open because that kind of hatred thrives in unrelated spaces like this one where people are likely to not be informed. Hopefully if these kinds of discussions are more public the many good people in the community can feel more empowered to use the report feature and help the mods out.

No it isn’t. I followed sonic fox for mk stuff and ended up with gay porn on my timeline.
Dude, you can't follow someone 'for' something. You follow them, you're going to get all of their tweets, be they about a game, about another game, about life in general, or just random thoughts. You should know this, and if you can't handle it, you shouldn't be following them.

Sonic's a human being, not a MK robot for your amusement.

You are a grown man, but it's worrying that so many of your viewpoints are so childish. This one included.

Stephanie is an NRS employee. Some people care about the things she does, and all things that happen concerning employees/pro players. If you don't care, it's LITERALLY as simple as not clicking on the topic. I don't get why you morons complain about not wanting to see a certain topic, but then proceed to click on those topics and engage in them when you have every choice not to.

I don't play Kung Lao or care about him at all, but if I see a topic about him on TYM, you know what I do? Keep scrolling. Because it's just that simple. Kung Lao is a game character. Stephanie is an NRS employee. They're both relevant to the game as it stands. Put your ignorance away and only interact with topics you care about if it bothers you so much.

People like this are why we need the cancelled feature I mentioned in my status.

I suggest;
  • a tym tournament series
  • a tym competitive sponsor
  • improved moderation and character forums
  • more stories like event hubs including NRS staff Q&A's, top player profile pieces and interviews
  • attempt to get a big name reinvolved in the site like Mr. Aquaman and have him run a tournament serioes
i suggest p2w as a brand new improved-moderator!
honestly, p2w would be a great moderator!
tym would became amazing again!

Big yikes.

Pretty sure @Dreamcatcher and I are the only two people on this site who run a league and tourneys with actual prizes. Tourneys that pros joined/are joining (like Ninjakilla, TitaniumTigerz, etc.).

Not bragging (okay I am we worked hard), just saying, we've been doing tourneys for a while now and no one never acknowledged it except the people who participated in it. Our thread is even pinned like come on.

Tourneys are not going to save this site, a passionate leader is, and it ain't P2W.

I'd participate but I'm awful. If everyone else is too, I'll join lol

good call .... seems more about a behaviour overall change in the usual internet media consumer typical profile .... people becoming lazy rat ass on subject discussions, preferring a supposed "agile and quickly" digital solution as discord, twitter, twitch, youtube etc , to interact with others persons .... chattering few words and polluting the rest of discussions with videos , gifs and links of memes ..... more or less the same stupid fuck I do for fun sometimes here, hehe :p

anyway, all of these tools seems a mess when people starting flooding and spaming with bullshit , trollism and nonsense crap , making the main purpose of good talk on some important issue, to get lost ....

I'm an old hag motherfucker that enjoy more the "old school" traditional style of specialized forums regarding my favourite subjects, so, for MK competitive level discussions, I still prefer TYM over all other avaliable online channels ....

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
Reading all the posts in here thinking, dont feel too bad about tym. The site has been mentioned at least, imagine being MKO lol oldest mk site arguably yet anyone remember the last time NRS mentioned them like at all? Lol I get why, mostly casuals there and horrible mods as to why alot of us oldtimers came here. But honestly, this topic is going to take a big left turn, can see it already lol. Someone will try to go on about certain users hating on certain people at NRS as that's why TYM gets less traffic from NRS. Which would be bs but I can tell that's where this is headed...
