Here's the thing. Yes, Aquaman is a top tier character. Yes, Aquaman is boring to watch and annoying to play against. We all already knew this before EVO. None of that matters in regards to winning. If you're a professional fighting game player playing for IPS points and huge cash payouts, you're going to either pick the best characters, or the characters that best fit your style. It is not Dragon's fault that Aquaman is a boring character.
But to claim he only won because of the character is absolutely ridiculous and ignorant. Dragon plays the damn game like over 10 hours a day, grinding. He keeps notes on everything as he's shown on twitter. Notes on matchups, specific scenarios, player tendencies, match footage, etc. He's a student of the game. He started using Aquaman early and has said multiple times he has fun using him and Ivy out of the entire roster.
There's not a single character in Injustice 2 that you can pick and have them carry you to a top 8 at a major. And certainly not top 8 at EVO. You have to be an absolutely phenomenal player to make top 8 regardless of your character choice. There's a reason Dragon consistently makes top 8. If it was his character only than everyone who uses Aquaman would be making top 8. Many many MANY Aquaman players drowned in pools or later on in the tournament.
You simply cannot take away the amount of time and dedication this kid puts into the game. He treats it like any professional gamer should, a job. He made $25k+ in 2 days from playing a video game he loves. That should be nothing but celebrated, as we all are gamers ourselves. Dragon played flawlessly and to take credit away from his win because he used a boring character is asinine and childish. Give him the props he deserves for surviving 800+ players and not losing a single set to anyone he faced. That's an amazing feat no matter how you want to look at it.
