It's already available and after having watched it, here's my review as someone who played every single game. I was raised with Mortal Kombat and will always have a weak spot for the Trilogy era, but aside from the first movie I have not enjoyed a single film or series, drawn or real life. I did not like the art style after seeing the trailers though the X-rays and violence were impressive looking. I did not really look forward to this as it's pretty much a given what will happen and with the realism MK and amount of characters the franchise has garnered over the years, another tournament with just some Trilogy characters - even with the skins of MK9 and X - did not tickle my fancy.
Still had to give it a shot and probably only due to low expectations I thought it was somewhat decent. Spoiler free version: it does great at setting up Scorpion's quest for revenge. I felt his pain as the movie starts to unfold and has a great start. Already an appearance by a 3D era character look-a-like early on was quite surprising. Honestly, I even gained more appreciation for Scorpion's chains. You will see The whole tournament setup seems a bit forced but given the story it's okay I guess. It does borrow some elements from the original movie as seen in the small preview clips and trailer.
After some preliminaries the tournament begins with the heroes fighting some familiair foes and Scorpion's plot unfolds throughout with Quan Chi in the background of it all. There's actually quite some places you will recognise, some faces as well, but not as much as I'd hoped and actually as you'd expect. After some stuff in-between the battles, filled with some humour and story development, there's the grand finale with a bit of a rushed ending. The tournament was always secondary, which is proven by the ending.
To me while there was a surprise here and there, it's as expected very straight forward and not even the X-Rays or appearances from familiar faces could save it. I'm sure some people who are more into cartoons and drawn pictures or just crazy MK fans, will somehow think it's the best thing since the Legacy series, but honestly it just isn't. The movie is short, feels short and honestly most battles just felt like filler. I rather they didn't have any tournament and just made it an actual story surrounding Scorpion's Revenge.
I really don't wish to spoil anymore in the spoiler free review, so I'll leave it at this: it's a a meagre 6 out of 10. Some great visuals, solid yet simple story that's been told before, fun moments and some small surprises made it mildly entertaining. Glad I didn't pay for it though. Read on below if you want to know which characters are part of the story and some more honest thoughts.

Aside from Raiden, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Quan Chi, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Kitana, Goro & Johnny Cage there are only a few characters who appear: Baraka, Reptile, Kano & Shao Kahn and though not named there's Nitara who has a scene with Johnny and arguably Moloch who is the 3D era character I was referring to. Both are not named, but can be assumed to be. All the speculation about some characters at the gathering in ST's palace are just goons, so no Sheeva, Mileena or a new character introduced and though we saw the Centaurs, I highly doubt they wanted us to see one of them as Motaro because in a fight there's several and just some other netherrealm looking beasts alongside. The fights are actually very short and unimpressive you can guess who will win just based on how this usually goes. The "fatalities" are great though!
The lack of some more characters and even places we recognise was disappointing and it just felt like the tournament was totally unnecessary. The use of some elements, places and looks of characters in MKX just didn't add anything noteworthy and in particular the ending was laughable. It's basically a scene any true MK fan would recognise and seems to be a mockery of an open ending with a potential sequel though no way that's what is really going to happen and gladly so. I think it's still good fan service for sure, I definitely appreciate the X-Ray stuff, gore in particular, but if this is the quality of the story and fights then meh....I hope it's not a bad sign of what's to come for the reboot, another tournament with someone's personal story mixed into it. I do think it's interesting Nitara will likely be part of the reboot and was in here. Potential KP2?
