Mortal Kombat Scorpion's Revenge - Review (Spoilers at the botttom)

MK Dragon

Apprentice
It's already available and after having watched it, here's my review as someone who played every single game. I was raised with Mortal Kombat and will always have a weak spot for the Trilogy era, but aside from the first movie I have not enjoyed a single film or series, drawn or real life. I did not like the art style after seeing the trailers though the X-rays and violence were impressive looking. I did not really look forward to this as it's pretty much a given what will happen and with the realism MK and amount of characters the franchise has garnered over the years, another tournament with just some Trilogy characters - even with the skins of MK9 and X - did not tickle my fancy.

Still had to give it a shot and probably only due to low expectations I thought it was somewhat decent. Spoiler free version: it does great at setting up Scorpion's quest for revenge. I felt his pain as the movie starts to unfold and has a great start. Already an appearance by a 3D era character look-a-like early on was quite surprising. Honestly, I even gained more appreciation for Scorpion's chains. You will see ;) The whole tournament setup seems a bit forced but given the story it's okay I guess. It does borrow some elements from the original movie as seen in the small preview clips and trailer.

After some preliminaries the tournament begins with the heroes fighting some familiair foes and Scorpion's plot unfolds throughout with Quan Chi in the background of it all. There's actually quite some places you will recognise, some faces as well, but not as much as I'd hoped and actually as you'd expect. After some stuff in-between the battles, filled with some humour and story development, there's the grand finale with a bit of a rushed ending. The tournament was always secondary, which is proven by the ending.

To me while there was a surprise here and there, it's as expected very straight forward and not even the X-Rays or appearances from familiar faces could save it. I'm sure some people who are more into cartoons and drawn pictures or just crazy MK fans, will somehow think it's the best thing since the Legacy series, but honestly it just isn't. The movie is short, feels short and honestly most battles just felt like filler. I rather they didn't have any tournament and just made it an actual story surrounding Scorpion's Revenge.

I really don't wish to spoil anymore in the spoiler free review, so I'll leave it at this: it's a a meagre 6 out of 10. Some great visuals, solid yet simple story that's been told before, fun moments and some small surprises made it mildly entertaining. Glad I didn't pay for it though. Read on below if you want to know which characters are part of the story and some more honest thoughts.

Aside from Raiden, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Quan Chi, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya, Kitana, Goro & Johnny Cage there are only a few characters who appear: Baraka, Reptile, Kano & Shao Kahn and though not named there's Nitara who has a scene with Johnny and arguably Moloch who is the 3D era character I was referring to. Both are not named, but can be assumed to be. All the speculation about some characters at the gathering in ST's palace are just goons, so no Sheeva, Mileena or a new character introduced and though we saw the Centaurs, I highly doubt they wanted us to see one of them as Motaro because in a fight there's several and just some other netherrealm looking beasts alongside. The fights are actually very short and unimpressive you can guess who will win just based on how this usually goes. The "fatalities" are great though!

The lack of some more characters and even places we recognise was disappointing and it just felt like the tournament was totally unnecessary. The use of some elements, places and looks of characters in MKX just didn't add anything noteworthy and in particular the ending was laughable. It's basically a scene any true MK fan would recognise and seems to be a mockery of an open ending with a potential sequel though no way that's what is really going to happen and gladly so. I think it's still good fan service for sure, I definitely appreciate the X-Ray stuff, gore in particular, but if this is the quality of the story and fights then meh....I hope it's not a bad sign of what's to come for the reboot, another tournament with someone's personal story mixed into it. I do think it's interesting Nitara will likely be part of the reboot and was in here. Potential KP2? ;)

How does it compare to the last two animated MKs, The Journey Begins and Defenders of the Realm?

The trailer alone had me expecting the phrase "KOMBAT TIME!" to appear any second

In terms of MK's televised media, my feelings are as follows (and these scores are based on Mortal Kombat projects, not compared to Oscar winning material by genuine auteurs):

MK The Movie - great for what it is, cheesy as hell, but wonderful fun. It at least succeeded in some great cinematography (sadly not enough of gorgeous Thailand and too many styrofoam sound-stages) with a few fantastic casting choices that resonate perfectly to this day (Linden Ashby, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa, Trevor Goddard) and Goro is a magnificent prop from ADI. Fantastic contemporary soundtrack and tribal score that work in a beautiful harmony. 7.5/10

The Journey Begins - rubbish, but appreciated its attempts to give some backstory to the Shokan and Lin Kuei vs Shirai Ryu, soundtrack was ok too (actually have the CD somewhere). 4/10

Annihilation - godawful in every single conceivable way. 1/10 (for at least being funny I guess)

Defenders of the Realm - utter crap, hated the whole X-Men/MASK/Defenders of the Earth thing it was going for with the jets and flying all over the world to battle evil. KOMBAT TIME!!!! Kind of amazed that in MKX and MK11 they have actually kind of channeled this a bit with the Special Forces technology! Worse than TJB because I just didn't like the world of MK3 compared to the world of MK1 and its Shaolin mysticism. Scores would be swapped if we'd have got a tv series about the "tenth" (first) tournament rather than apocalypse America with fighter jets and volcanoes. 3/10

Conquest - I utterly adored this as a teenager, though am thoroughly aware it's cheap and nasty and pretty terrible now, but it was good guilty fun at the time. It never looked like Asia, always looked like a cheap pink-filtered Florida woodland (which it was) and generally looked like low-grade porn (which it wished it was), but it had some genuinely solid moments; Shao Kahn was fantastic and at his most intelligently vicious (his dialogue and put-downs are far better than the dumb brute in MK11), nice exploration of the Saurians, I'm sure the Kreeyans were an influence on the Kytin and that Qali influenced the look of Jade in MK11's story mode, the development of the Deadly Alliance before the games had even explored that, loved learning about Shang Tsung's sifu Master Cho, and even if the backstory was all wrong, Noob Saibot looked fantastic as this revolting oozing oil ninja. Also really appreciated the downbeat ending regardless of it contradicting everything; and made the best use of Annihilation stock footage possible. Raiden was enjoyable too. Plus it was full of nearly naked ladies which 17 year old me loved 21 years ago (well I obviously still love that now, but not necessarily what I look for in a historical backstory for Mortal Kombat). Glad the ninjas went back to the MK 95 movie leather style (compared to the plastic Power Rangers who appeared in Annihilation), even if the masks looked cheap as hell. 6/10

Rebirth - thought it was great, totally deviated from the source material but appreciated what they were going for, like some beyond monstrous kumite from Blood Sport. It lacked the Asian mysticism but still thought they did good with it. 7/10

Legacy - really really enjoyed it. Occasionally suffered from Conquest's poor location filming that look like cheap woodlands in America, but some of it is utterly wonderful. Scorpion and Sub-Zero is fantastically done, enjoyed the cyber-ninjas and felt very true to MK3, I seem to be the only one but actually LOVED the Rayden episode in the asylum. The closest its ever been to being done right, very disappointed series 3 never happened especially after reports seem to suggest it was actually completed? It's objectively probably better than the first film and would score it higher, but personally prefer the first movie for its soundtrack, cast and member-berries. 7.5/10

So when it comes to the new projects of the new film and Legends: Scorpion, I really don't know what to expect.

Based upon my above feelings of the above, do you expect I'll like it or think it's crap? And yes, I'm already aware my standards are low :D

Just as a follow-up... I'm watching MK Conquest on dailymotion right now (got the complete series on DVD from Australia somewhere, think it's in my storage depot, so, you know, I've paid my way), and my god... this is beyond glorious. It's terrible yet wonderful. It's like a porn preamble with no sexual payoff. It's so deliciously campy, I'd not seen this since 1999 (although I bought the DVDs in the mid 2000s I never watched them). Wow, this is magnificent. I've had a few beers, but god I wish I had a pizza too right now...

... and above all else, I wish I was 17 again, with a world of wonder ahead of me, all the mistakes of my life never having happened and only really wondering if we'd ever get an MK5 :(

This is something I really look forward too. Ima rant a lil bit here but for YEARS people hav ebeen hatiing on Scorpion with meme " ARRGGG REVENEGGGEEE!!!!" posts like making fun of him for his motivations and yeah its a cliche motivation for a character but it hits, like if you take a moment to put yourself in his shoes and think about how you would feel if that happened to you you would probably be furious too.

I won't watch until physical release but hopefully that moment will really nail home the pain and why he is so passionate about his goal.

The Sonya vs Reptile fight is a nice reminder of why I enjoyed his treatment in MKX so much.
Whereas in this He gets treated like a jobber in this and much like MK9 he doesn't say anything.

It is better this way

Was Reptile not a jobber in MKX? I thought he was getting shit on constantly there too lol.

And this sucking same as every other MK product that isn't a video game is no shocker.

I saw it. It was awesome. MK fanboys will like it. They changed a couple of things from the game mythos...but I didnt mind it at all. I'm feeling a 9/10, Possibly the best video game adaptation I've seen.

Yeah he loses some fights but in X he has a name, a history with other characters, a voice and his own motives. He has a character.

In this he's nothing. He is just there to job to make brick faced Sonya look cool.

HEY EVERYONE ITS THE FIRST ANIMATION IN 20 YEARS, LETS RETELL MK1 AND MAKE SCORPION DO EVERYTHING.
That was my one gripe with the movie. It's the same issue I had with Wolverine stealing the show in the X-men film. Scorpion gets shoved down your throat a bit much in this film. Scorpion was never suppose to be the main protagonist in MK.

All hail emperor Liucifer Kang!

MAYBE MAKE THE ROSTER OF MK12 WITH 25 SLOTS OF SCORPION. I mean, at this point, why not? How about even renaming the franchise to Scorpion Kombat or Scorpion Scorpion. Music consists of The Scorpions and we have ourself a Scorpion/Scorpion game.

The mk11 roster already feels like 25 slots of scorpion.

HEY EVERYONE ITS THE FIRST ANIMATION IN 20 YEARS, LETS RETELL MK1 AND MAKE SCORPION DO EVERYTHING. The Scorpion duck suckery is getting ridicilous. He even steals Sub Zeros signature ESRB making fatality and made its own. WOW.
The funniest thing here is that Scorpion broke the rules of Mortal Kombat and should be punished by the Elder Gods lol. They destroyed MK with that move.

DragonofDadashov24

Let’s see whose fire burns hotter
Reptile— a jobber
Sub-Zero— dies even worse than in the movie
Quan Chi— becomes Shang Tsung’s bitch and then Scorpion’s
Liu Kang— oh my GOD, who the fuck came up with the idea?! Outworld technically won the tournament, there is no Earthrrealm.
Sonya— OP
Cage— Useless
Scorpion— this Scorpion would destroy Fire God Liu Kang and it isn’t a Good thing.

Well good for you, but I don't think any animated movie will beat the Street Fighter 2 one given how to this day it still looks good. Much better than this! And at the time, it was even better considering the timeframe. This is easily the best MK animation for sure.

I have very low expectations, like i have with all the recent MK games. I pre-ordered 2 blu ray's with a figure, guess i keep them sealed and sale them later to some stupid MKx and MK11 fanboys. Damn NRS and WB keep crapping on the mytholgies is really putting me off.

ah...good old Street Fighter 2. It’s a classic...seen it atleast 20 times. The animation, the fights, the music. It’s all top notch. That’s another 9/10. One issue I have always had with that movie is the lack of a real story...it’s just a series of fights but it’s fun af. I wasn’t a big fan of the animation quality of Scorpion’s Revenge at first but it grew on me. The fight scenes were really well done.
