PC/Steam Version - Performance, Technical and General Discussion Thread

Man, I made an account here just to find a more competitive minded MK forum as well as converse about the PC version specifically (both things reddit failed to help with terribly).

Was having a hell of a time getting my new Qanba Crystal to read as a Playstation controller and not an Xbox One remote, but just enabling "Playstation Configuration" in the controller settings from Big Picture mode and switching the stick to PS4 mode made it work just perfectly.

Sadly it's still the Xbox button prompts that appear in menus and as inputs so that's kind of annoying but at least the stick works perfectly.

I've gotten to play a little more today, and I'm updating my personal bug list below. I'll bold the new additions:

Major

- UPDATED: My regular Krypt crash-to-desktops may have been resolved with the 05/31 patch! I just spent about thirty minutes running around the Krypt without a single crash. I went all over the island, took the odd elevator, and even used "Esc" on my Keyboard to exit the Kollector's Store (which used to guarantee a crash) and no crash! Since I want to play/test more before confirming, I'll leave this bug listed for now. Original bug note as follows: Krypt regularly crashing to desktop. This was introduced with the 05/24 patch, and it does not seem to matter if it's at 30 FPS or 60 FPS. After the fourth crash, I verified my game's file integrity via the Steam Client, and I've been able to run around the Krypt for more than five minutes without a crash, so this may have solved the issue, but I need to test further.

Minor

- Frame rate hiccups introduced in gameplay. With the 05/31 patch, my game's frame rate in actual gameplay, according to the first Benchmark I ran after patch install, dropped down to about 25 FPS average. A second run of the Benchmark shortly thereafter registered 45 FPS average. An immediate third run of the Benchmark registered 59 -60 FPS average. My Benchmark average has remained 59-60 ever since, and as such, I'm listing this is a "minor" bug as opposed to a "major" bug. On occasion, while playing at the very start of a match, there might be some frame rate hiccups, though they're minor and do not affect my ability to play the game. They seem to resolve themselves in a few seconds. There is no pattern to this that I can see, and it appears to be random. It also did not occur right away, and only started appearing after I completed a few Towers of Time.

- Frame rate hiccups introduced in the Krypt. With the 05/31 patch, I've noticed some a large number of frame rate drops occurring in the Krypt. These appear to be random, as I've not noticed a pattern and have not been able to reproduce on demand. Since they don't affect my ability to playthrough the Krypt, and since frame drops are preferable to crash-to-desktops, I'm listing this as a "minor" and not a "major" bug. Note I'm playing with "Krypt 60 FPS Mode" Off.

- In Character Intros, at 60 FPS, the first character to speak will not move their mouth. This occurs 100% of the time, and is a bug introduced with the 05/24 patch. On rare occasions, further dialogue will appear slightly out-of-sync. Note this bug only affects characters with lips. Characters like Baraka are unaffected and will always move their mouth.

- On occasion, I'll see white or green artifacts pop up for a frame or so on-screen. This only occurs in a match, not menus, and the frequency seems to have increased with the 05/24 patch. I have not been able to reproduce on-demand, but I've been noticing it occurs more in Goro's Lair.

- Every so often, the Fatality music will not play when a Fatality is initiated. This seems to occur on any stage, and will also occur sometimes if the AI performs a Fatality.

- On rare occasions, the Stage music seems to cut out completely on the Prehistoric Stage. I have not had this occur on any other background, including the other Hourglass ones.

- On very rare occasions, the Brutality music will not play, and your character will not say their verbal taunt after finishing a Brutality, despite doing their talking animation. This bug may have been caused by the 05/31 patch, as I have not experienced it prior and I've performed hundreds of Brutalities.

Nuisance/Quality of Life

- In order to skip watching intros, I now need to press "Y" as opposed to "A." This was a common thing in the previous two Mortal Kombat games, either on PC or console, as I remap my face buttons to 2,3,1,4. Since "3" is now mapped to "Y," I now have to press this button to skip intros. Ironically while in previous games, this bug was not a thing in Mortal Kombat 11 until the 05/24 patch.

- The game's default master volume is extremely low.

My system specs are:
  • Intel Core i5 4440 @ 3.10 Ghz
  • 16 GB Ram
  • nVidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti OC Windforce 6G with the 430.86 Drivers (Drivers updated from my last post)
  • 1 TB HDD
  • Windows 10 Home October 2018 Update
  • Hori Fighting Commander for Xbox One
  • Logitech K120 Keyboard and Mouse
Note I use my Controller to play normally, save for the Krypt where I use the Mouse/Keyboard since the Fighting Commander doesn't have sticks. I also need to awkwardly use the Keyboard to use Konsumables in Towers.

I'm regularly updating WB Support and providing them any info they request.

My game is stuck running at 45-50 fps now. It's literally unplayable
Yep... That's what I've been hearing. I cannot confirm / deny anything but the useless anti-cheat malware, because I don't "max out" the game's settings.

However, the confluence of evidence is increasingly pointing to their introduction of [more] anti-cheat measures -- either to try thwart extant "cheating" (literally, gaining access to content people already own), or because of the impending DLC that will, presumably, re-roll the Krypt et al. diminishing returns RNG (and they don't want people accessing the unreleased content before its drip-fed to them).

This game is pretty cpu heavy. On my i7 3770 cpu one @ 4.1 ghz sits at around 90% in a match. The rest don't get get past 50%.
I think this last patch made it like that, because as far as i could observe, this game is more GPU oriented, even the specs on recommended do not ask for a fancy CPU.

This summs up very nicely.

On my end, performance took a hit, now on matches i see some moves dropping the fps by 3 - 5 frames momentarily, where before it was 60 FPS all the time, menus stay at 50 fps at times(being all time 60 FPS before). I went back to 30 FPS and it seems that it reduced some in game hiccups i was having after this new patch(also moving mouths). Game is not crashing anymore at least though.

I hope they iron out these issues as soon as possible.

Aaaaaand the "server issues" are back at it again to prevent me from playing an entire ranked set, plus the performance issues.
Guess I'm gonna have to wait for the next patch to be able to play the game again.

Non-gameplay sections switch to 30 FPS automatically (Menus, cutscenes, fatalities, etc.) for me. Don't remember if that was the case before. I'm not seeing all the recent performance issues others are, however. The ToT fights pre-loading has been nice.

This was the standart when the game released, they recently added the option to keep 60 FPS on all situations, however since last patch, the performance overall took a hit(at least for me and some others).

@Scheme Kahn't Can you elaborate as to what cheating is going on? I haven't played online yet so I'm unfamiliar with what's going on there.

@Slymind Thanks. This is the list I keep updating and forwarding to WB Support for their reference. They're going to be escalating me up to the next tier of support tech, which is fine. I'm mainly hoping their passing along details to QLOC since it's pretty obvious the issues are with the patches and not most of our systems.

For the lips moving at the beginning of Intros, yeah, 30 FPS they function fine, it's only in 60 FPS they don't move at first. Save Baraka; he's fine as no lips. It's funny for Kotal Kahn in his default skin as his chin guard moves, but not his mouth.

@CorneliusBrutus Can you elaborate on what you mean by the Tower of Time preload?

That's pretty cool, if i detect something else i will report to you then, if it's ok with you.

Sure, no problem. I also encourage you to open your own ticket with them. The more people sending in tickets with full details, providing them the Dxdiag and Msinfo they request, the better!

I'm also going to change the in-game FPS issues to a "major" bug, as my frame rate dropped horribly again. Ended up having to run the benchmark four times before it went back to 59 FPS average.

alright so there is a new problem with the game

The krypt just stole me 5000k souls
i forged around 6k souls and i was opening soul chests but then the game disconnected because of the mk servers then i go back in the krypt and i have only 83 souls.... not 5k

WTF happend

then i just crafted 2000k more souls and just lost them then i got 93 souls when i reconnected. the krypt is ♥♥♥♥ed

In a ToT match now I've noticed recently that during the pre-match section (where you're looking at the tower and the next opponent, and can choose konsumables) there seems to be some more activity, and when the load screen occurs it's pretty short and the bar starts around half-filled up. It's just a (somewhat educated) guess on my part, but there might be some assets being pre-loaded there

Hey all,

There's a post on the Steam boards acknowledging the issues, and that a fix is in the works:

Hello all,
We are aware of the performance issues that began after the last patch. We are currently working on a resolution for the slowdowns and hope to have an update soon. Thank you for your patience.

Before quitting last night, I switched Intros and such back to 30 FPS.

When I fired up the game tonight, my first benchmark was 59 FPS average, my second was 60 FPS average. I may have had one frame drop while playing, but I'm not 100% sure as it was just as a Krushing Blow was initiating.

Has anyone tried while turning off 60 FPS Menus and Special Moves?

Got a reply from WB Support that I wanted to share with you all:

"Thank you for getting back to us on this issue. We are happy to hear that the crashing issue that you are experiencing appears to be fixed, but we will be more than happy to assist you further should the issue re-occur.

With regards to the FPS issue that you are experiencing, this issue is currently being investigated. While the FPS issue may improve in time, we hope that the Game Team will be able to address this issue with a future update to the game.

As for the quality of life notes and observations that you made, we are more than happy to forward this feedback to the Game Team to aid in their investigations and assist with making improvements to the game.

We apologize for any inconveniences that this may have caused and thank you for your patience."

Basically support acknowledging the performance issues as well, that it does need to be fixed via a patch.

I'm also pleased they are going to forward items from my list on to the devs directly; that's exactly what I was hoping for.

What they do with the info, of course, is up to them.

Hi all,

A hotfix has been released specifically to address the performance issues from Patch 5 (the May 31st patch).

Developer post here.

I'm currently at work and have not been able to download and verify. If any of you are able to do so, please post how things are going, pro or contra.

I just wanted to post my own impressions regarding today's hotfix. For me, it has improved overall performance, but I don't believe it's restored it to pre-Patch 5 quality.

After patch installation I ran the Benchmark, and got around 37 FPS Average. My first Benchmark post-Patch 5 usually starts off around the 25 FPS average mark. I ran the Benchmark a second time immediately, and it was back up to 60 FPS average.

Overall, this is an improvement as it normally took me three runs of the Benchmark to get back to 60 FPS. I did a quick Novice Klassic Tower run and didn't notice any frame drops, which was a very good sign.

I exited the game, and turned on nVidia Share, as I wanted to see about recording a Fight Local (Versus AI) set, as post-Patch 5 the game would never pass the 40's for an average Benchmark, and sadly, this occurred again. That tells me the Hotfix didn't fix things all the way.

I turned off nVidia Share (not just recording but the overall overlay), and rebooted my system. I then verified the File Integrity of Mortal Kombat 11, and everything came back good.

I ran the Benchmark, and I want to say it was 59 FPS right off the bat. I fired up Practice, and selected Kahn's Coliseum, a stage known for frame drops since Patch 5, and there were drops right at the beginning, but after a few seconds everything cleared up.

I exited the game, enabled the overlay for nVidia Share and went back into the game, and the Benchmark again gave me 60 FPS. I did a best of five set against the Hard AI on Cyber Lin Kuei Assembly, and no frame drops.

I need to test further, but it does seem, as I originally mentioned, that performance is indeed improved, but not pre-Patch 5 performance. Just wanted to share all this with you, and hope other are having at the least similar luck.

One thing I wanna know is why even from release the game is more resource heavy after closing it than when launching it. It really occupies the computer and takes Steam time to see itself as out of the game.

As for the hotfix it didn't change much I can see with me...the problems I had noticed before was poor online and random server disconnects, that hasn't changed.

It wasn't meant to change that though. The hotfix was meant to correct the performance issues introduced by Patch 5 (May 31st patch).

Performance is still awful on my system... And unlike for some people it doesn't improve after playing the game for a while... I get fps drops into the 20's while playing (most settings on low...) and into the 10's while in the Krypt...
