In the Soul Calibur community when I began, I asked for help in match ups and developing my play. The Top players of the community not only befriended but also played long sets online, invited me to offline get togethers and gave feedback.

In the MK community when I started with 9. I clearly was in need of help. Cossner and Curbo both noticed, friends and helped me learn the basics of the game. In X, I've received help from most of the Top players and had some advice given from the EU Top as well.

I was once watching an SF stream where the streamer was playing Ranked for some time. One of the Chat players asked for some matches to help level up (since he and the streamer played the same character) Said streamer agreed by telling the player to go to SRK and buy a block of time off their schedule.

Whether that's right or "wrong" isn't really the point to me. Some people may have different experiences, these are my own. The NRS, SC and Skull Girl communities have all been very helpful and welcoming. IF you approach with a level of respect for who your talking to and their time.

Of course, I've also seen Top players play sets with "Randoms" win convincingly ofc and said Random uploads the 1 or 2 matches cherry picked where they won. So maybe that has something to do with it. Who knows.

Not by King's criteria for this thread. If he'd won EVO in 2 different NRS games (or had EVO medals in IGAU/MKX) you might have a case there, but this is more about people who were fear-inducing top players in all 3 games.
And why am I supposed to follow King's criteria for this thread exactly? He arbitrarily made the criteria, but I have a different one.

This thread is so good it even brought back Coolwhip lol. In my opinion when ranking best NRS players, you can't let achievements from one game overpower achievements from another game. Every game equals eachother. So if player A is better than player B at MK9, but Player B is better than player A at both Injustice and MKX, player B wins by default. So even if you were #1 in the world in one game (for example REO MK9) if somebody else has MKX and Injustice over you, they are a better NRS player.

That's how I would rank it anyways
Haha, to be clear, I'm really glad you made the thread. This sort of stuff is juicy and interesting.

I agree with you about consistency over three games being a big factor, but I don't think all achievements are equal. Winning back-to-back EVOs is a huge deal that in my opinion compensates for future shortcomings to some extent. So if we're talking about greatness, it's hard to look past back to back EVOs. But if we're talking about the average skill across all 3 games, then no, I don't think PL would have a case to be ranked over guys like Wound, you, and others...

But I do think it's funny that people have issues with PL being ranked but thing that REO being ranked is a no-brainer. Both are being ranked almost exclusively on their MK9 resume. If one is ranked, the other should be as well.

I'm glad your literally dead, I just hope.it happened before you managed to breed. That's pretty likely though, so I'm not too worried.

And if you noticed, I didn't equate his spending thousands of hours/dollars to My watching a stream. I equated it to the thousands of fans who watch those streams. Tens of thousands, etc. That is what I'm equating it to. Which you knew but for the sake of an argument you chose to ignore it so you could make your cute little aids comment.

I know you have the same mentality that revolves around this weird ideal that the competitive player(s) are the Alpha and Omega of this, but that's not the case. It's a relationship. There is no FGC without the fans, thinking otherwise is actually stupid and you aren't stupid, which means you're arguing for the sake of arguing because, I assume, though you accuse others of being butthurt , you are the one with a sore ass. Which makes sense, Foxy is probably a top. You seem just as pissed/annoyed by what you disagree with as I am with what I disagree with.

Here's the thing, the FGC needs pros and it needs Foxy and players like him, I don't dispute that, doing so would be stupid, but the rub is when so many players think for some reason that they are owed something by the community at large when they contribute nothing except their play... Now, to be fair, I downplayed the value of that in my previous post, and I shouldn't have. Obviously high level play IS a contribution in its own right, and I'll give you that point..

The focus though is on Pigs comment that there is more to being relevant and worth listening too than just being gud.

He mentions Yomi and I agree, they could have done so much to build and promote a brand, with YouTube and twitch and even possibly small invitational tourneys (or open, just thinking out loud), merchandise maybe, who knows. So much more could have been done and had it been, they as players would have likely been able to secure additional income and reputation (s) that would have carried them far past Yomi''s couch. I'd like to add, I have nothing against Yomi and I'm not shit talking than, I'm just using their scenario to make a point.

Outside of supreme dominance, winning is forgettable.

Ya know, I love fighting games. I really do and I don't mean to belittle anyone's aspirations but if you lose in a fighting game, even a tournament, and it CRUSHES YOUR DREAMS, I feel like your dreams are lacking some and you might need perspective in your life. Yeah, if Foxy takes Evo from you in the grand finals, that's a big deal, but outside something like that.. crushing dreams ? Maybe my definition of dream is different than some people's then. Shrug. This is just a personal thing too I guess, but I've never taken pleasure in crushing someone else's dream, outside of rivals and that kind of thing. I take pleasure in winning but I think it's petty to revel in someone else's discomfiture, and I was a boxer and mixed martial artist for 15yrs.. sports designed around hurting the other guy, but I suppose there are different degrees of 'hurt'.

Also so I don't forget, the first thing you quoted was an accident.. I was typing up a reply to another post, but it was scattered and I wasn't focused so I scrapped it, I thought I deleted it and have. I idea how it ended up as part of my actual post, especially since I made posts after I typed it.. but shrug. The gist of it was just me wanting to make the point than even though skill later trumps skill early, it's not ENTIRELY that cut and dry, as metas change and some players excel in one type of meta and fail to do so in another, and that being a strong player.in the relative chaos of early game release is a skill in and of itself.

I'll try for a more thorough reply later if I care to add anything else. I don't think it's necessary since Cossner is literally dead though.

You're getting triggered by F0xy making a funny comment.
Yes, the FGC needs viewers, but viewers are not part of the FGC, just like people who watch sports are not part of the competitive sportsball scene.
100 stream monster may disappear and no one will notice. 100 competitive players may disappear and suddenly you don't have an NRS scene anymore.
My problem with people like you is that you're getting really #triggered about the best players arguing about who's the bestest because it doesn't include you. It has nothing to do with elitism, it's just that you feel excluded from the rest of the people who decided to be part of the community. If you want to be a random forum poster then go ahead but don't expect anyone to be ripping their clothes for you.

This is the most elitist community I've ever seen. It's all title prop fishing and fake validation from a really small community.

No wonder this community never grows
We went from 300-500 at EVO to 700-1000. And from 100 being really good for a major in MK9's prime to now being down to 100 near the end of a game's life.

TYM continues to get more and more registrations as people come in and are interested in learning these games. And random MKX streams are getting as many or more viewers than our favorite locals did during IGAU.

We need to stop this false narrative that "the community never grows". It's never been true and it just makes people who are saying it look out of touch :p

Only person I'm 100% on is Sonic Fox

And then there are like 4 other guys that you HAVE to consider. PL, DJT, 16-Bit, and Pig.

No evo numbers are only that big during the first year of a game, one of the best selling games of the year during one of the most rapidly growing tournaments of the year. Obviously you could expect big numbers that year, just like we could expect big numbers for injustice 2 this year. It's just a damn cycle that always happens where we can claim some kind of validity but there's never consistency.

@RM Cossner about the online warrior stuff, I called him out in that thread for prop fishing what do you mean? Get over yourself homie, obviously you didn't see what I said to him. Maybe I didn't go into detail on him as I did on this thread, but those guys aren't pivotal members of the community like some listed in this thread.

@PLAYING TO WIN so sonicfox isn't humble because he teabags? He's young and knows he's on top. That's confidence, atleast he doesn't gloat about his position constantly and seek validation on a public platform. He knows where he's at and everytime I've seen him stream he's answering questions and taking matches.

@YOMI FOREVER KING obviously you wouldn't see how elitist shit like this thread is, you created the thread. Dude I think your amazing player with a good mindstate, but what's the point? I just don't understand.

I mean maybe people are OK with 10K pot bonuses and less than 100 pre reg, less people to fight for the money right? But people laugh at us for that kind of shit. Throw 10K at marvel and watch them get 200+ the day of the announcement. Hell you don't even need to give money to smash and they'll bring their own set ups and still get more pre reg. There's excuses for that too though right?

But maybe you guys are right, I don't play anymore so I shouldn't spend my time trying to defend a community who doesn't care about itself. It rather spend time arguing over top 5 players and top 5 characters. It's whatever.

I think I responded to everyone who had previously replied to me so I guess I'll stop being a party popper and let you guys continue a conversation you'll just have again in a couple months.

Can you just stop pretending like because the top guys have egos and confidence that it means they don't care? You will never find bigger defenders then the absolute top guys; again, just because we like to argue over who was the best is all BECAUSE they care about the game and its legacy. Jesus H, dude, grow up.

Also, again, get out of the bubble and realize that MK and NRS games in general are WEIRD. They are a NICHE title because they are WEIRD and unlike the standard. SF and Marvel exist with established legacies and more or less "traditional" play. Games that deviate like GG and BB and MK and Injustice and KI and DOA and KOF will always have small turnouts because they don't appeal on a wide basis. Which is totally fine, it just means that its players tend to be dedicated solely to it and are more fanatic, but most importantly it also means there can only be so many of those fans.

This is also all ignoring that Echo Fox is assembling what they feel to be the biggest stars of the FGC and put Sonic and Scar amongst legends like Jwong, Tokido and Momochi. If our scene was so terrible and so not worth putting up with, why would they get recognized? Two things: A) NRS games have big dev support and pot bonuses and B) clearly people with more business acumen than us thanks that those two are marketable and popular talents. And they also indulge in the same sort of shenanigans (or have in the past) and it was none the worse for wear.

If anything, you need to be less sensitive that people are "laughing" at the scene for having small numbers because you should know better. But you don't, so by all means continue to wallow in despair at the state of the scene like all those other geeks like TakeaChance and CharlieMurphey and those Red Fist clowns while the scene actually moves on and continues to grow like it has for years.

Forgot to respond to you. My bad. You done now?

Don't understand why people are OK being the laughing stock of the FGC but w 10K pot bonuses I guess I see why it's easy to have tough skin.

Anyways, like I said, I'm done, I just had forgot to reply to you... soooooo yeeeeeah...

And who cares if they are?

Pryce, you should come out to something and see what the community not based on TYM is like. It'll change your mind

How did you get this absurdly low self-esteem, and who's laughing? One of the most e-sports illuminati dudes period in UltraDavid listed our Evo GF as his second best match of 2016 and Sonic as the best player of 2016, and every dude in the Ultrachen family commended NRS games getting on national television. What in God's holy name do you keep blathering about?

There it is...
I have no issues with people listing accolades in this thread its that a number of them throw out their achievements if you bring up an unrelated topic and some just get so butthurt if you're not gargling on their balls.

700+ was our second year, not our first, and that's bigger than any other NRS EVO for any other game.

The Capcom community has built its numbers by steadily hosting events for more than 20 years running. The game that started MvC's style of gameplay, X-Men: Children of the Atom, came out in the US in 1995. Smash has built their competitive scene over 10+ years.

Mortal Kombat has been a high-level featured FGC game since... 2011. It has no Japanese scene and hasn't had an arcade machine since MK4. It does not feature Mario, Link, and Fox (some of the highest selling video game characters in the history of video games). And it's bloody and not everyone is going to like it.

You are comparing apples to oranges. It's time for us to stop doing this out of self-hate. We are in the right place for who were are, and what we play. We don't have Capcom's numbers because we are not building on a 20+ year legacy of being the FGC's main game developer -- and that's ok :)

The MK9-based scene is growing at a healthy rate for being less than 6 years old, and it will continute to grow each year.

@16 Bit just curious if you would ever consider doing another podcast (maybe even with Slips and/or K7) but just have it be about pop culture stuff (non-NRS video games, movies, TV, comics, politics, random topics, etc)? That way you could still do that kind of entertainment but not have it conflict with your job. I know like everyone on TYM would listen to it, I know I would. Just a thought, you may have no time or interest in doing that.

They picked up fox and scar for the money. No ESL and even if NRS kept throwing money at tournaments who knows if they would be echo fox now.

It's not like they care about what is happening on the ground floor, on tym, or how guys like Pryce who are the average joe going to locals where nobody plays the game anymore and comes to tym to read stuff like"top 5 nrs players" threads. It's a joke and that's it even going into specific behaviors from top players that are cancerous. There's a new game coming out which means free money and exposure. Not much to do with how "legendary" Scar and Sonicfox are they just win in their game which happens to have a lot of money and production value in it despite everything else.

Yeah I totally get the no time thing (I got married in 2013 and have not been to a tournament since mk9, my second kid is on the way at this point). I thought you guys should do movie discussions (super hero movies, star wars, stuff like that). Those segments from KTP were some of my favorite non MK related stuff. Anyway if you dont have time that's totally understandable.
