The Injustice League Podcast: Episode 1

Winter Brawl is a great tournament and it's a shame this community all of a sudden acts like it doesn't exist. It wasn't like that before. Winter Brawl 2012 was my first major and it was great then last year it was awesome. Also last year Tyrant came and we had a great time, memories...
whos pretending it doesnt exist? Theo said theres a good chance he might make it out. It's also not for another 2 weeks, we have time to discuss it on the next show. Don't worry Mr VonStroke, there will be plenty of people there for you to freeze and do random slides on.

I have this dream where games would have built-in replays with hitbox visualization to make this sort of thing awesome. But that probably requires the game to be on PC first and just that part is an insurmountable struggle.
I think you should engineer your way out of this problem....wait, does that not apply to everything??

"Is being hype on commentary unprofessional?"

I don't think the criticism was the commentary was too "hype"

It may have opposed some elements of commentary that you believe were hype, but obviously the thread never stated those things where bad because they generated hype.

The logical fallacy there is finding someone who hates carrots and assuming it's because they hate the color orange rather than the taste.

Basically, that section of the pod-cast was devoted to a straw-man argument...

I think you insult the listener when you think hype can only be heard and not observed. Many of the viewers that watch any game on stream are familiar with the game. I don't need an over the top eyewitness account of something I have visually witnessed myself. Get over your egos and the idea that you are "bringing the hype". The hype was brought by the competitors and was witnessed by all watching. Only thing you brought was a mic and your own interpretation of the hype.

I think if you guys ever took the opportunity to watch a baseball game on tv and then heard that same game on the radio you would understand the difference between a visual and audio presentation. With a visual representation, you don't need much commentary because you are seeing what is happening in real time. Where as with an audio presentation you have to quickly get to the nitty gritty details of what is going on and describe the atmosphere to someone who cannot see what is going on. You have to set the mood, describe the situation and hint at the variables that could be game changers. Too many FGC commentators act like they are broadcasting on the radio when it is totally unnecessary given the format.

I wasn't referring to the thread at all; I was speaking in general. KitanaPrime was responding to the thread.

What you fail to acknowledge is that people who are watching baseball on TV are most likely doing so voluntarily, and understand the game to a point where they can drown out the commentary with their own visual interpretation. Fighting game streams are completely different. There's a percentage of people who are there for the game being featured, there are people waiting for other games, and there are people watching because it's a Major. I have enough experience watching streams and reading chats in the last 3 years to know what people like and dislike in commentary. When they don't play a game or understand it much, speaking in monotone is a huge turn off, especially if something amazing just happened. It is up to the commentator to emphasize the importance of what just occurred on the screen so the new viewer can share the same appreciation as those who actually play the game. Hell, I play almost every game I watch on stream and boring commentators are still off putting to me because I feel they aren't truly conveying the intricacies of the matches.

Most of the people who sit around waiting for their main game to show up on the stream are not really interested in other games. If they were you would be seeing uninformed players asking for explanations about what is happening on screen, but instead you see one of two things on the stream chat: 1). " When's my game of interest going to start?" or 2). Random shout out and side conversations about other games. Heck most of the time people who are interested in the game are having side conversations about match ups or other nonsense.

If the commentary was so important and necessary for hype, why is it not broadcast over a PA during the tournament itself?

East Coast tournaments sometimes have in house MC's like Yipes, depending on how he feels. The point is exactly what you've just mentioned: drawing interest into the game. If you're already not a fan of Injustice, then how is someone boring you to death on the microphone going to aid the situation? Hype commentary pulls in the viewer and makes them appreciate something they wouldn't have cared about otherwise.

Yeah I am not a supporter of that theory. I think you get people interested in a game by inviting them to play the game not by talking about it. I think you will have a better chance of growing your scene if you invite/bring new players to your casual/tournament scene. And I think casuals are very important aspect of this. Having dedicated casual setups at tournaments I think would go a long way to getting new players interested in the game. The opportunity exist at at tournament were there are dozens of players waiting for their pool in a different game, to hook in new players with casual sets. Someone could watch a game one million times but unless they are forced to play it, many of their first impressions will not be changed.

@DarthArma Aquaman's scoop is not a particularly good wake-up. You don't need to risk neutral jumping it. It's not fully invincible and can be stuffed consistently with pretty much any of Batman's normals.

Nice frame bro.

He's right.

At least wakeup slide is invincible. Trait is the only think saving wakeup scoop at all and against a character like Killer Frost Batman slide truly is better.

I don't think a wakeup attack can be classified as good unless it's fully invincible.

Question: near the end of the podcast you made a point about how lucky some people are to have a local scene and I couldn't agree more, and that if you are not so fortunate to have such a thing you should start one. Does anyone have any additional advice for this?
There is a local scene in my area (Austin TX) for Street Fighter and Marvel but there's not a ton of interest in Injustice. I went to a local event recently with my entire setup looking for interest and only two other people signed up for the side tournament and I believe they were both from San Antonio. I'm sure there's other people in the area interested in the game, but the established community here is kind of lukewarm too it.
I've thought about going to Kombat Houston before...but that's like a 3 hour drive or something so I'm not sure I could go consistently.

We kind of have the same thing in College Station. There are only 3 of us but we travel to all of the locals in Dallas/Houston or the ones that seem like they will have a good turnout.

Slide isnt fully invincible, You can stuff it on wake up, you can punish it on block, you can even jump away, whiff a move, and still have time to punish it.

What's a good wake up?? guys??

You're entitled to your opinion, and we can agree to disagree. Speaking as a product of this theory, I would have never thought I'd touch an anime game, then I saw Coopa enthusiastically play through Persona 4 on FinestKO and ended up purchasing the special edition. There could be 30 casual stations for Tekken and I still wouldn't play. You can't force people to like your game, but if you make it more exciting to watch, then they're more inclined to give it a chance.

What's a good wake up?? guys??

Stuffing slide is extremely difficult compared to scoop. Probably not even possible in the same situations. I've tried working on this and can only stuff it with my standing 3, nothing else, and doing it very late. It's gotta be a super tight window.

Neither are that good. Good wakeup = KF slide lol.
