I'm not a fan of either of the fighters but Gus should have won that fight. So many stuffed take downs and didn't Gus have one more take down than the champ? and when they showed striking stats Gus landed 88 head strikes and Jones landed 18.

Jones won 4+5 without a doubt.

Gustaffson might have won 1-3. But round 2 was close and so was round 1 despite Gus getting the takedown briefly. Imo Jones winning is how it should be scored. Gus was doing fuck all the last round and Jones hurt him in the 4th despite initially losing that round.

According to the unified rules and judging I think htere is a lot of evidence pointing to Gus winning, but in my mind doing damage and ending the fight stronger like that is more impressive than slightly winning rounds. Gus impressed the hell out of me and everyone. Did not think he was gonna stop those takedowns. His footwork is top notch and Jones looked very frustrated.

I mean looking at the statistics of the fight Gus demolished. And honestly neither fighter did anything in the 5th. Either way it was a f'ing battle.

Damn, Gus brought it tonight. I had Jones winning the 2nd and the championship rounds for a split UD.

And how about Barao's spinning KO? Wicked stuff.
People are saying it comes down to rounds 2 and 4, I had Gus winning 2 and jones winning 4 but it was a good enough fight that I won't complain.

And I didn't really like that barao finish much.... Wineland is being a good sport about it and Dana said it was too close to complain, but I thought it was stopped way too early. He was recovering and probably looking to pull guard. The spinning back kick didn't look to hurt him as much as knocking him down.

I gave Jones the 2nd and the 4th but the 4th was really close. I only gave him the nod because he did more damage (in my opinion) in the last minute there than Gus did in the first 4. I'd like to see a rematch, though. Now that both of these guys have felt each other out, I think we could have a great rivalry on our hands.

As for Barao, I think it may have been a bit early, but I don't think Wineland was going to get any better position after he got knocked down. Barao was on his back like a fly on cow shit, and in my experience when a finisher takes your back you're about sunk no matter how you slice it. The ref could've given it a few more seconds because it did look like he was starting to come around slowly, but I think it'd end the same either way

I didn't care for Jones at all before this fight but he is growing on me. Still want to see him move up and take on some HW's, especially after that war with Gus.

Shall be interesting to see a rematch after he fights Glover and Gus fights Davis(maybe????).

Whatever happened to Machida earning the number 1 spot last year when he beat Bader on the Fox event?

I broke my back... It's spinal.

Davis already beat Gus and they train together now (I think?) so I'm not sure how likely that is. I'd like to see Jones-Glover happen first and Gus to face the loser of that, but it all depends on how healthy they end up.

Machida declined a title fight because it was somewhat short notice for a belt fight when it happened. So he lost his shot. Right now he's still a ways off from it anyway. Losing to Davis (no matter how controversial, he looked very unimpressive) and winning a boring fight against Henderson doesn't look good. We'll see how much he can come back in MW though.

Davis and Gus train together, yeah. I want Gus to get a rematch and Glover to fight Davis, though. Glover for all his hype shouldn't get a title shot after he beat an unranked Ryan Bader in a fight where he was very close to get knocked out himself.

Lyoto at 185 should be very interesting, unless Anderson wins back the title at the end of the year and they keep on keeping on with their "we won't fight" tradition. I think he'll be elite as soon as he drops because for once he'll have the size and strength advantage in some of his matchups, as opposed to fighting guys like Jones and Davis who are just much bigger than he is.

IMO, you have to take the title from the champ. If it comes down to a decision and the winner isnt clear, the champ should retain his belt, which is what i think happened with the Jones fight. Maybe Gus did win the fight, but he didnt do enough to take the title from Jones. Hope that makes some kind of sense lol

The stoppage was a bit early in the sense that he wasn't completely out, but he was stuck in a shitty position. He couldn't really pull guard from that position. The best he could do was try to get stand up, but Barao was all over him and likely would have landed more shots or slapped on a submission. He could have potentially rolled to guard, but iirc Barao was heavy on top of him so that would have been difficult. Either way, I think Barao was going to get a finish from that point.

The thing with Machida is that if he doesn't get a KO/Submission, he often looks "unimpressive." What I mean by that is that he is willing to just sit back and counter all day and doesn't try to force a stoppage. For example, the Bader fight was nothing special until he KTFO Bader. Same with the Rampage fight, he didn't look too great until that flurry he landed in the 3rd round. The only time Machida has looked aggressive and did it successfully was against Evans and Silva. Even the Couture fight was mediocre until he kicked the shit out of him.

Machida is a very technical fighter and from a technical standpoint, he is very interesting to watch because of how he handles distance and footwork. But that doesn't translate too well into being exciting.

Machida at MW is interesting. He looks ripped to shit already. I hope Anderson beats Weidman, but if he doesn't then Weidman has a dangerous pool of guys to defend against (Belfort, Machida, Jacare etc).

I'm not doubting at all Barao's ability to finish a fight like that, but it bothers me when it leaves a possibility like that open. Barao def could've put Wineland out or done more damage, we just don't know, since it looked more like Barao was positioning for a T/KO than actually doing the damage to call one. Probably not as bad as the Barnett-Mir one a couple weeks ago though.

I agree completely about Machida's technical skill, he actually used to be one of my favorites. But idk. In this sport you need to work, not everyone's going to provide an opening. It's not as much about excitement as it is about winning. Like, as much as you can argue that Machida beat Davis, he didn't do anything to really deserve that win (neither did, really). So he needs to step up his game, imo. But he's skilled enough that we could see it at MW. I hope he destroys Tim Kennedy.

I'm hoping more that Jacare becomes the next big MW though. This nikka's putting in work.

And about Cain v. JDS, there is no way that first fight was a fluke. He set that punch up, it's not like he just randomly threw that out there. And in the second fight Cain almost looked foolish in the opening 2 minutes constantly missing his takedowns. The main reason JDS lost was because he did nothing after defending the takedown. If he learns to attack off of the failed takedown then he can win. I am picking JDS to win the third fight although a big part of my reasoning is because he's my favorite HW besides Big Nog.
Who I think will actually win -
Jones
Cain
Weidman
Aldo
Bendo
Hendricks

Hold that

(not counting Bendo losing since I wrote that before Grant was switched, and I picked Pettis so hold dat)

I came in 2nd for this card:

And for another recent one I came in 10th. Get at me.

Doo Ho Choi signed with the UFC. 11-1 Korean fighter who is 22 years old. He's going to be someone to keep an eye on. Great timing on knees and is fun to watch.

and doo ho choi looks interesting. i like seeing new asian prospects come in, since a lot of them haven't done as well as i hoped. i know there's going to be good ones.

The UFC randomly signs old Japenese fighters. At least with the Korean guys they tend to sign them when they are still young (KZ, DHK, Choi, Lim etc).

They also signed Kawajiri, but again, he is old as fuck. I think he can get some wins but it would have been great to sign him immediately when PRIDE died. Seeing Kid Yamamoto lose to guys that he has no business losing to is hard to watch. Oh, at least they got Kyoji Horiguchi. Think he'll probably drop to FLW. Pague looked like a giant next to him.

Agreed. Same thing with Hioki, even though he got fucked by judges.

It'll be interesting though seeing how many prospects the UFC takes while Asia's trying to regrow their MMA scenes. Like, I'm not sure if we'll get to see someone like Aoki when One FC is trying to get bigger.
