General/Other - Smoke XL Robo Smoke Discussion Thread

gotta stay sharp!
He is alright for the moment. The strings were he incases his self in smoke then you can go for a 50-50 is crazy. But his damage out put doesnt seem to be as crazy as like cyrax.

Right now I feel he's the worst of all the robots. Very difficult to play at full screen, and really hard to open people up. The reset setups are nice, but your constantly having to ex smoke bomb to stay plus. Damage is about the same as the others to nothing crazy. Not a lot of dirt with him

edit: no armor as well

EX phase through gaps and against armor breaker meaties seems like a lot of fun... Get fucked Liu Kangs, Jaxes and Kung Jins... He looks like a defensive run away character to me...

Most characters have to take a risk when using their armored wakeups man. This crap that people peach about "everyone has safe armor" is a load of bs. Most characters that use armored wakeups can he blown up if the opponent reads it. There needs to be some element of reading your opponent's next move and not just a "well, smoke has a bar, I guess oki is completely pointless" situation.
The ice clone isn't working properly!

I only got as amped up as I did from dude talking down to me. That being said, I still kinda disagree. I get the part of reads and risk reward. There are characters that oki is pointless if they have a bar. You can try to bait it but it's still safe. Whiff punishing is you're only bet on safe or plus armored specials but they shouldn't wakeup unless they have to. Either way they're on their feet for free or for a bar.

Reposting this into this thread.

Okay, while I was practicing some Smoke combos something interesting happened. The game was tricked into thinking I had crossed under the training dummy while using B21. The result was that Smoke teleported to the same position he was in. I made a simple test combo to show y'all. I think maybe some interesting gimmicks can be found using this little trick.

The fact that they cannot over-commit on oki since you can ex phase and whiff punish gave smoke the option of wake up for free with buttons or jumps. It is somewhat the same as playing Kung Lao or Millena

I was about to say that EX phase is like HatSpin... You'll see a lot of Smokes waking up with strings or throws when he'll have a bar... AGAINST ANYONE... I think it's even better than Raiden EX Tele since Smoke has way better range (whiff punish)...

Btw cassie ex nutpunch is also fully invincible. Do it with subzero set on reversal and see what happen.
Is the purpose of Cassie's move to evade pressure. Before the patch she had 3 armored moves. She also has a vortex. One was the fastest move in the game and absolutely 100% get up for a bar move regardless of reads. Btw...

You can't delay wakeup with the move. You'll get hit while you're standing up. I've been grinding smoke since he came out just like we all have. The move has problems.

I mean that argument is fair, yeah there are some characters that have strong and safe wakeup armor but for the most part using a bar on wakeup is a read that could either help you or get you blown up. I know you only got amped up cause of the reaction from some other posters, no worries. And the ice clone is clearly not functioning properly, that's a given :DOGE

You just described almost every character in MK. Plus armor... safe armor... they get up for a bar. So he has an unsafe fully invincible move that causes no damage. The point of the move is to get away from pressure. What sense does it make that his escape move is unsafe. It's not an escape move then.
If you're to scared to phase out just block then

Something im thinking about is ending combos where you go for damage in the smoke ball that drops them from the sky.

You lose maybe 2-3% damage but it leaves you with a ton of time to set multiple things up. You can run under them to mess with wake ups and even fade back once you cross under.

As they fall you can Ex Invis and either try to punish a wake up if they do it or go in for deadly invisible shenanigans.

Overall i think this might be the best way to go for setups off the more damaging combos since other enders like teleport are not plus on oki and air throw puts them very far away.

You could also try things like ending in f21 for the tricky smoke effect for the same damage with decent advantage on hit for oki.

Not even joking sweep could be a good ender for the untechable knockdown as well. Just fuudo for thought.

Can you give an example combo of your initial idea?

What i was testing with was

Starter xx Ex tele NJP 4 xx Trident JIP 4 bomb and just letting them drop.

I havent really focused on optimizing my combos so their might be better extensions.

But yeah like @GrimJack just posted you can get a vortex at similar damage so my stuff is probably obsolete.

This would be more gimmicky to really try to blow up a wake up or catch them off guard trying to make a comeback and keep them honest instead of a typical vortex setup.

So does his fade move or phasing have invincibility frames and if so how many?
I'm surprised they didn't give at least a little bit of armor to his ex teleport even if it's just a hit of armor

Even though its not guaranteed f21 phase gives a really good smokescreen effect and can disorient people.

I think mixing up your vortex endings and timings on the mixup is just as important as anything because if they have to guess on when the mixup is coming they are less likely to have a block solidified for the guess. This is something Sonicfox excelled at with Batgirl and why his vortex was deadlier than anyone elses. He not only mixed you up, but made you guess when.
