Well, as part of my git gud or get out of the FGC initiative, I started running ranked today.

Sigh. Bronze is one million Ryus, 500,000 Kens and like.. four other characters.

So.. Is this lagg thing new? I have genuinely never run ranked before, I just play sets vs individuals, so I haven't dealt with this.. but its.. awful. Like pathetically bad. 1 in 3 matches is laggy enough to effect the match and 1 in 5-6 is laggy enough to be a worthless match with no way to intelligently play.

My connection isnt insane but:

Its not terrible. Im wired, no one else on my network but me, etc.

Any way.

Played the bulk of my matchs as Ryu, but will probably swap over to Akuma next session. I lost some rounds and like one match, because in massive rollback, Kens/Ryus spamming DPs, even non invincible ones, are impossible to deal with. But otherwise, I slowly accrued some points.. I won, I dunno, 4 or 5 sets then logged off. Im far worse a player than I thought, but once I settle down I'll be fine. Its just a weird adjustment because I really only ever play people far better than myself, so dropping in to the dregs of ranked and going three matches without even SEEING a normal, is so weird compared to the mashfest that SFV once you get off the bottom.
Don't play akuma in lag. He loses too much on a missed confirm.

Yea it seems most people in bronze are playing in a McDonalds bathroom. It gets better as your rank goes up but I rarely ever have a good match in ranked. It's either super laggy or the guy I'm playing has no idea what hes doing.

It's all so very confusing.
Ugh, What the hell. 4-5min between matches and when it finds someone they have what I think was a brazilian flag, and INSANE tele lag. Win and quit, 4 minutes later matched with same person after taking my connection from 4-5 to only 5.. who then rage quits after the first round.. wait 6min for a match.. then give up for a bit.

Gief is kinda fun in low level ranked though, he shits on mashing.

Vega in ranked is aids. No anti air against people who jump around like they are on a trampoline just isn't fun
IMO cr hp in clawless stance is very consistent (on CC, convert with sweep). Other than that, I'd go for reactive air to airs at awkward ranges or st hk vs max range jump ins.

Cr HP clawless is great. But when he has his claw on he struggles hard. The lk ball roll is actually fairly consistent, but needs to be timed perfectly because it only has 2 active frames. His only great anti air is v trigger but you can't even CA after it for whatever reason

I've seen a lot of people put in serious work with st hk into ex wall dive as an aa.
It's very good from certain ranges. Near max range, it's very reliable and leads to a ton of damage. I used to think it was amazing.

However, as you play better people you realize that actually your opponent has very little reason to jump at that range. Vega does not have a fireball or a normal which forces you to jump (e.g., Chun's standing heavy punch). F hp looks like it might serve that purpose but it doesn't because it leaves a huge lingering hurtbox on the screen afterward - the solution to that is whiff punishing rather than jumping.

Wont be able to ranked again till in the morning. Dunno who I'm going to try out.. probably Guile and Urien. I'm going to come up with some kind if structure for this.. 6-ish sets, so between 12 and 18 matches, which each potential character.

I really like Urien, and not just because he's probably the best character in the game right now, he's pretty straightforward to play at a basic level, but obviously has some crazy shit for a 'back end' to his gameplay.

I only got a single set in as Laura yesterday vs a weird Nash, and it always takes me so long to settle down, I didnt do anything productive. He was a jab masher too, which made him easy to beat but hard to do much against from a setup/mixup angle since my timings on Laura are canned ass, he interrupted every attempt at a throw or command grab I made outside the maybe two times I didnt goof it and played to my frame advantage.

So far, Ryu has been the most enjoyable in ranked just because I feel in control of him. Ive discovered that Ive shit on ranked and ignored it for so long, and I have a naturally BAD temper, which has led to a weird ass anxiety when I play. If Im playing against someone better than me or around my level, Im fine, dont have a problem, no matter how close things get and how heated the fight is. Im not saying I dont fuck up in the clutch and choke, but Im not NERVOUS. Its not anxiety.. But put me in with people I genuinely KNOW are shit and the though of losing is such a body blow that I get nervous and twitchy and jittery. That for me, is pretty odd. I'm not a nervous type. Ive fought in front of over 2500 people before and been on stage to a crowd 15,000 strong and all I felt was elated, not nervous. Ive gone to my 'locals' and played the little monthly tourney there without so much as a thought.. But online, anonymous SFV makes me nervous.

This is what I get for spending so much time NOT playing, and playing such a small group of people. I just have to start over.

I absolutely love it when my opponents stops doing anything - like that is going to make me back off or deter me.

I just style all over their character like its Tony Hawk.

I would never do something like that, simply because I've had my controller die on me mid-match to only be saved by my opponent's reluctance to go ham while I'm clearly not playing.

Best case scenario is that the dude's controller died or something, and they'll be ready to fight in a few seconds. Worst case scenario: they're just being childish, in which case they'll have to sit and watch the timer run out. Either way, I'd never attack an opponent who's unprepared. No fun in that win.

That kid was selling for sting
Haha, that clip is from an old Sprite ad. It's brilliant. Sting just comes in and bodies the kid.

Anyway, back to SFV. I don't think my Cammy/Guile team is working out for me. Guile is the tits but Cammy is... I dunno, boring? She's just not the character for me. Who should I pick up as a replacement secondary: Balrog or Laura? I like 'em both but I'm not sure which is the better choice right now in this version of the game. I'm leaning towards Laura but it's always nice to hear some opinions.

Cammy's MK pretty much controls every exchange. She's easy. Thats the only reason I could see moving on from her. If you want complexity in your SF life, Cammy's not for you.
