So I've mostly played Leo but I'm trying other characters to see if I wanna stick with him. I recognize that he's good but there are parts of his kit I don't gel with

I've been trying Ky and Anji. Typical of me to shy away from a good character for someone low tier. For some reason I'm doing better with Anji but does anyone think he's good? The rekka pressure is very risky and most people seem to just use the system mechanics with him
I don't really like anji in this game and he seems to have rough matchups vs characters with DPs due to gap in the rekka.

I think Anji is pretty cool in this. His fuujin pressure may have gaps but I think he's supposed to earn the opportunity to fill those gaps when he's able to properly set up butterfly, and everywhere else he's punishing people for attacking him. When fuujin hits he gets a wall splat pretty often.
Definitely seems like an advanced character to me because of how his guard point mechanic works and understanding what button to respond with based on what you stopped with the guard point.
Seems like a really solid defensive mix character.

Also tier lists are a blight on mankind and should really just be ignored for the first few months of a game's life, or longer.

I think Anji is high risk high reward and is reliant on conditioning. Naturally, this means everyone's dumping him into low tier since we're only at the end of week 2 since release and no one's gotten him down yet. He has some insane damage potential via his spin dodge and rekka as well as anti-air situations. Anji will blow you the fuck up with just 2-4 touches while also having really unique stagger pressure with the potential to loop or set up butterfly.

I think Sol and Ram can blow you up with a slight graze :D

There are some much more optimized Anji players you can find that have some really scary pressure so I get that. I think I may just not have the right optimization for him, but playing theory fighter makes me wonder what he really does exceptionally that others don't. I'm not ready to give up on him yet, but MK11 really conditioned me to think of characters by directly comparing their tools to others. Spawn is a better Shao, Liu is a better Jax, etc

Also I think early tier lists are 100% acceptable, as long as they're impressions. It's good to talk about who's strong early in the game. It pushes the meta forward

Anji is neat, and I really hope someone figures out something cool with him.

My disappointment has been with I-No, who I've spent this week with. She has her mix, yes, and her supers are both crazy good... but her dash is just so slow for what you'd use a dash for (it's fine for its mixup function), and her stuff is just so incredibly specific (you need to delay Chemical Love by a few frames manually here, you need to microwalk forwards to connect this, dash jS won't connect to anything if you didn't dash for exactly 0.36 seconds from this distance) for not really getting that much of a reward from it. And then there's stuff like dK dD having a gap in it that a dragon punch goes through... She is fine, it's just that a lot of that rests on her supers, which feels like a band-aid.

Anyone blowing you up in strive with 4 touches is not blowing you up.

I think DP characters can beat all Fujin followups so...good luck

Not the Low Slash. It covers the gap so if they commit to it at least you clip them with that.

If Anji could had a backdash off Fujin that would make the character come full circle for me, but I have to make due with what I have. His neutral is starting to make more sense to me at least.

Oh? I thought there was a 3f gap that they could DP through. Good for Anji. He needs it

Against Leo, you need to be VERY particular about your Fujin range, or he can punish you with his DP.

He was the DP character I tested Anji against, and I found it ridiculous how few in number your safe strings became, but... the other DPs aren't as bad.

Edit: omg Nago can punish Anji's cS H FujinS with his kick, which combos into anything. This is getting more awkward by the minute, because your blockstrings vs a lot of the cast get really limited.

I definitely appreciate your labbing lol. That's good to know. I guess he's not a great solo-main, though maybe those matchups are still doable without Fujin S. Maybe just counterpick them with Axl or something?

It's more like you shouldn't do closeS H FujinS if either party dashed, because then they have forward momentum, leaving them closer after the string. It's just hard to get into closeS range without someone dashing, so...

If you have dash momentum, you can combo closeS S H into FujinS, which pushes them back a bit more, but S H is not a true blockstring, so DP people could mash out before the H comes out. Or people with reversal supers, like Nago.

Similarly, K downD is not a true blockstring, so you should use downK downD, even though downK has a much worse reach than the standing K. Just dash into it. However, downD is -11 on block, so for instance Sol can just punish it with his S and...

Anji, why are you such a struggle bus.

I think having a lot of juicy gaps for people to try and reversal through can work in his favor since he has a parry built into his kit. You may be able to parry their punish attempts and get a big combo. Granted people can PRC the parry and I'm not sure how the advantage works there. It seems very muddy. Then you could probably use 236S to avoid reversal throws, I imagine.

It's all very 4D chess while most characters have pressure that just functions. But this is the character and you play him because you wanna do weirdo shit like canceling sweep into raw spin because you know they're predicting held Fujin and they aren't ready to punish any of the three gimmicks you're presenting. It really helps that these reads can convert into fat damage.

His kit just doesn't seem to be very strong in my opinion for reasons you mentioned. I was also interested in him but before I started labbing him I listened to Jwong talk about why he thinks anji is just not very good for about 15 minutes and him being disappointed about it. The points he was making have pretty much been mentioned here. Other characters just seem to have multiple useful options where as anji's stuff is pretty lackluster. Does his OH option out of rekkas low crush? I never paid attention.

Anji's proximity range to get his closeS to come out feels awfully short. Keeps catching me, when I expect to be in range but just get the much worse farS.

This is Anji we're talking about. Of course it doesn't. :DOGE

Voice setting: japanese does nothing for the announcer.

Realized this today, when my biggest issue in playing Anji is hearing that (I bet american) rando go Ääääääääääänjiiiii Meetow instead of Anji Mito.

Sounds like more people bought it on PC too, which is pretty wild.

*Edit: I don't have those stats, just heresy and what I heard in whispers relayed. Though I do think the numbers exist for it.
NLBC and WNF both running PC for their strive tournies definitely help but yeah more people are starting to play fgs on pc in general. There is also a list floating around with stages that run like shit on shit on PS4 and low end PC's with the jellyfish one being the worst.

Why this game take so damn long to communicate with the server — at the splash screen. Then you finally get in, communicate with server again to get into a lobby, then god forbid you get a network error and the games sends you all the way back out to the splash screen again for some reason .... Huge negative for me.

I thought my version of the game was bugging out when I first encountered this.

This is a huge deal. They built this like any other stupid modern game where you can't even do anything single-player without a connection it seems, resulting in taking 10 years to just get into the main menu. Absolutely bonkers how much time it takes just for me to get to play, especially combined with getting through another round of connectivity to online AND dealing with the lobby system.

I swear ArcSys designed so much of the game to simply keep one from playing. It's very odd and very frustrating. Just let me play the game I paid for, please.

I guess it's a testament to everything else they did right that people are willing to deal with all of it to play. If they didn't nail the net code, I doubt anyone would stick around once the new game smell wears off, cuz the stank of all the net issues is something awful.

The game can still be played offline and skips the first connecting screen before main menu, if you just wanna hit the lab quick.

It is pretty bad waiting for the server each time.
