Guilty Gear -STRIVE-

Sutter Pain

Your mothers main.
Really enjoying this game so far just vs the cpu and training mode. I tried online for a just a handful of matches and it felt good except for 1 match. The game play is super fun and confirming stray hits into combos into wall break is really satisfying. I sadly wont be able to play as much as like but I got a bit of time the first couple days and had a blast.

I do wish the game had like 4-5 more characters in the base roster. The slowdowns are pretty obnoxious on CH also but not a deal breaker. Just playing vs maniac CPU May makes me want to seek out NON dolphin safe tuna and buy a lifetime supply.

Strive Is fun af but.. also hard af. The game's neutral is super weird to me and I find myself air dashing in all the time with Ram's normals.

Its almost weird playing a game that demands aggression because I've always been this wall of defense and let my opponent make the mistake first.

Gonna keep grinding though because large swords go bbbrrrr
Play Axl then

You can't buffer anything in this game while in block stun can you? Doing some of those Dojo missions and really feels like you can't. How do punishes work then? Does 5f normal punish -5? Does 5f special?

Finally back home and have been doing mission mode items between work stuff. Really loving the pacing of everything and am excited to start labbing and actually playing later. Anyone got any tips for Giovanna?

Also, holy fuck. Is it just me or is the wakeup timing in the game like 1-2 frames at most? The knockdown reversal backdash and knockdown reversal DP missions are just impossible for me.

Not just you. Everyone is like what is going on with reversals. Was watching Nicky's stream when he hit those missions and then I tried it to see what was going on. I couldn't figure it out, and a couple days ago it was one of the things Max brought up in his monolog about How he was feeling about the game.

I dont see why it needs to be hard. Make a decision and pay for it if you are wrong.

Giovanna is all about pressure pressure pressure. A lot of her stuff is plus but has gaps so she requires conditioning. k is a super good poke.

Also, the wakeup windows are almost nonexistant. It's very hard.

Is there any use for the holding stand dust attack that launches people in the air? It’s so reactable. I don’t see the CPU ever using it.

It's the game's universal overhead and can be chained into from c.S, 5K, or 2K buttons as a situational mix. You can also hit them with the quick version without the launch just to mix even more unless your character has other overheads to use.
Scores a hard knockdown if the air ender is used (pressing any button twice in a row).

You'd also be surprised how often people down/back and not see it in time.

Feels like many of those missions have 1-2 frames to work with. There's many I can't do.

Reversals have a 3 frame window I'm pretty sure. Which is VERY tight. For reference, Street Fighter uses 5 frames.

You can often tag on an extra Sepultura (qcbK) when people are on the ground at the end of combos. Like (close)S downH Sepultura K Sepultura Sepultura.

Use her spiralarrow move (qcfK) to close in through projectiles (it destroys one projectile it hits), it is plus on block. It's harder to use it in combos, but it can bounce-juggle people from the wall in some.

Her jump special (qcbS) is reactable, so not the best for mixing (but it as well is plus on block). Doing a crossup airdash jK qcbS (in the original direction, not switching commands even though you crossed up) seems its main use (because that gets you a combo if you RC).

Bind a button to the dash, you're going to use it a ton. She has an amazing dash, and you can extend the reach of anything by doing, say, Dash downS - she sill slide forwards from the momentum while kicking. An advanced application of this is advancing with Faultless Defense up (by doing dash backdown+two buttons) to do protected hops forwards, but don't worry about that now, just know that it exists.

Her jumpDust gets you amazing carry in air combos (jumpD airdash jD is a common thing). Her downDust sweep has deceptive range.

Thanks for all the tips! I've been trying so hard to get used to the dash button being a thing (mapped that immediately upon first getting in the game, along with RC and burst) and man is it fun as hell to stagger as her. 2K, K, 2S, S, 2P, P, Dust, grab, multiple P, multiple 2P, back dashing randomly after normals, random instant air dashes, some normals into Sepultura, some normals into Travao (Spril Arrow), some normals into Sol Poente (jumping kick thing) -- she has so many options to fuck around with due to her insane speed. Toss in the occasional RC and it's just ridiculous so far. Granted, very VERY few people I've fought so far know to YRC or faultless defense things yet so we'll see how well all this staggering works when I fight people who use their defensive options.

Have yet to fuck much with air combos as the timing on them has been a rough thing to learn so far, but I have at least learned to do a basic RC cancel off grabs via jK jD. Got two basic bnbs I've been relying on so far, but I really appreciate knowing that you can OTG with Sepultura after Sepultura. I knew you could do it after Sol Poente, but that's pretty big to add that extra bit of damage onto the end. I've also found that basically any corner situation where I can OTG, I do it immediately to force them up faster for easier staggers. It's been catching people so off guard.

Been going decently well so far considering it's my first Guilty Gear game. Gotten absolutely THRASHED by a couple players who actually knew what was going on though. Definitely in that crutch stage where I have decent universal fighting game fundamentals but no real skill with the game itself. Towers just locked me into floor 9 or higher so I'm sure I'm about to get kicked right on back down to floor 8 soon.

EDIT: also, this lobby system is one of the worst experiences I've ever had in any videogame. It is literally designed to KEEP you from playing the game. Absolutely unacceptable and beyond fucking stupid.

I got to fight Nago without a partner for the first time yesterday. I couldn’t defeat him. He’s really tough. And they say there’s a stage 9 level of him.

yeah, from what I understand there are different versions of the boss fight and the solo one where Nago is like 10x health is a beast.
I played through arcade mode with Zato and fought him with Millia. Between Zato, Millia, and Eddie it was a boot party, guy couldn't even get off the ground.

So I've mostly played Leo but I'm trying other characters to see if I wanna stick with him. I recognize that he's good but there are parts of his kit I don't gel with

I've been trying Ky and Anji. Typical of me to shy away from a good character for someone low tier. For some reason I'm doing better with Anji but does anyone think he's good? The rekka pressure is very risky and most people seem to just use the system mechanics with him
