Casuals flip-flopping: MK11 gameplay now "feels slow and limited"

Relevant spiel starts at around 9:30 (preceded by sponsor sycophancy).

tl;dw --
It's "super great" that players no longer need to memorise Rachmaninoff's Fifth / 'UP + button' type inputs to activate the erstwhile "Amplify", now "Burn" EX attacks (and that if they no longer have to, no one else is allowed to), BUT, it's not "super cool" that the game's lesser focus on comboes, its uncharacteristic slowness, and the "canned" nature of special moves, conspire to make the overall gameplay feel "super easy" and "limited", and the characters lacking in "cool stuff".

So a major concern from people from the get go kind of gets confirmed from someone who actually played the game and you call him a casual. Even the pros noted this from the reveal, but yea I guess you know more than the people who actually played it.....oh wait.

'Cept, a guy who avows to being sponsored by Warn-a-Brother and vows not to air leaks as such (so as to not wrangle his sponsors), to then take the hands-on that only very few, select folks have been gifted access by the guys he just kowtowed to, and to then rip on the ONLY part of the game that, when the honeymoon hype settles, fundamentally matters to a FIGHTING GAME, should be concerning to anyone who isn't here just for the gore porn and "Achievements"...

NB: The Paddle Pop lumpen has over 500K subs on his channel, and NRS clearly notice the guy. As such, whether or not "click bait" has been cast, they WILL be listening to this guy, and not you (*sorry) or me... As they likely listened to him and his ilk when it came to the "Amplify" inputs. The 64-cent question being: Can the gameplay be spruced up at this late stage -OR- are we destined for 'Mortal Kombat 11: Pig in Lipstick Edition'..?

The guy IS a casual -- his channel releases "reaction" videos, FFS! And that's the very point: Even a casual is finding that the game's gameplay is lacking. Not a persnickety pro, not 90's die-hard -- A CASUAL.

If one needs it explained, as to why this should set off alarm bells, then they probably should not be in this thread... Perhaps not even playing fighting games. (...Just sayin')

K so what about the pros who said the same thing?

Fujin!
Max's opinion hasn't changed AT ALL. At The Reveal event, he kept saying the game felt slow and basically complained about it the entire time. He would always start off with "The game looks frickin' FANTASTIC, but dood..." and then goes into what he didn't like about the game. I skimmed through this new video, and it seems he's doing to same stuff.

The intros of his videos highlights what he likes. He wants games like MKX, Killer Instinct, Marvel vs. Capcom, etc. He doesn't want games like MK11, SFV, or anything that is based around honest footsies. That's not really a bad thing -- everyone has their own opinions -- it just means that you can't expect someone who is all about the "HYPE" to care about an honest and straight forward fighting game. Notice how in this video he's complaining that Johnny's Ninja Mime counter isn't "really cool" because you can't get a combo off of it, and it's "just a counter". It's obviously not his type of game.

Damn did he really say that? Sounding like the combo fiends lol

I don’t get the “uncharacteristic showness part”. What part of the gameplay is uncharacteristic?
AND it’s the first game where they use character’s features in combos all the time

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on Max' opinion. He favors fast paced, rushdown fighters like the Marvel series over slower ones. So there is a bias in everything he says regarding the pace of MK11.

What's more concering is that so many NRS pro players said that the dashes and walks feel too slow and should be increased by around 20%.
And Max, who played the game recently said, that these speeds haven't increased at all. They might have actually gotten slower. And I have to say, someone like Kano does look painfully slow, does he not?

Plus on block.
Yeah him going
“I’m glad they removed the execution requirements for the amplified moves”

Then going “there really doesn’t seem to be any sort of distinct execution requirements in this game, mastering characters seems easy” later on his stream, pissed me off a little.

He’s alright but him acting like the unga-bunga brain dead 50/50 mixer 5 minute long juggle fest that was MKX was the apex of Mortal Kombat gameplay is kind of frustrating, and his fan base that mostly don’t really even play fighting games beyond ultra casual level taking his sentiments and parroting them in an even harsher manner is even more annoying.

I looked at the chat on his stream a few times and every time they threw a damn projectile people would start whining about zoning even existing.

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
I feel like the only reason so many people don't like slow paced is because slow paced means there's no room for ambiguous to an exploitable degree bullshit.

Give me that MK1/MKII methodical pace.
The Sub-Zero mirror was my favorite matchup in MK9.
As though having time to think and strategize in a fight is a bad thing.

It’s Max. He plays any new game for two weeks at most, then fucks off and plays something else. Who actually cares?
This.
He’s a casual player to top it off. I don’t even see a reason for someone to watch the guy. He shows the game, yeah, and? He doesn’t decide anything that happens to final product.
He’s fun? Maybe for some people. He irritates me with his constant complaints about everything.
He’s an expert? Just no. My 10 year old brother knows more.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on him I just think his opinion is more than overrated

Yep. I don't know if he used those words exactly, but said that the Ninja Mime move looked cool at first until it turned out just to be a counter with a punch, and the Amplified version doesn't give you a combo or anything.

MK11 is an honest fighting game, so Max isn't going to like it at all.

Ex mime gives a combo, though, if you amplify on hit. So if he said that he is not only being lame but also misinformed.

P.D. I wouldn't call MK11 honest so soon lol.

I'm not understanding why everyone is hating on max? He is one of the creators of Killer Instinct and plays tons of fighters maybe not at a high professional level but he's decent.
Seen him play some decent Tekken 7.

Max didn't flip-flop
As for the whole flip-flopping, what was said above was completely taken out of context. He has had issues with the game from first reveal. He hasn't changed his stance.
He didn't upload the NRS employee leak because that hit home for him and he felt like it was fucked up. After the leak he got invited to NRS and he paid his way there and after getting access to multiple unseen fighters he didn't even upload them on his channel he gave the footage to a friend/competitor.

Max on combos:
Him saying "the mime parry didn't launch for a cost of a bar" is not really that bad considering he was seeing Johnny didn't have hardly any juggling capabilities. It wasn't that special alone that made him say mime parry was lackluster it was more the lack of Johnny's comboability.
Now we all know Johnny can do combos but nothing like 14-25 hits.

He isn't lieing for WB and if one simply looked at his videos they would see he has said there is problems he would like addressed. If he was this shill he was painted out to be above he would be saying how great everything in the game is.

I'm also on the hype train for MK11 as well. The characters, Meter system, flawless block, neutral based gameplay, toned down 50/50's, counter hits, crushing blows, customization of specials and appearance all looks unbelievably awesome.
But it is early access build and everyone should expect the game to have is faults. You can't make an awesome game like this perfect before release. It will take betas, online tests, patches and huge updates and many trials and errors to get things where we want them.
