Captain Cold General Discussion Thread

Has anyone been able to grind out the Poison Ivy matchup with Captain Cold? I've fought a few so far and it's looking pretty bleak. Her zoning game is extremely strong, especially when that trait is up. It's hard to play the patience game. Only thing I can think to do is smart useage of icycles and tap trait and block to build that up as quickly as possible but that's about it. It's an extremely steep uphill battle, just as bad as Aquaman and probably worse than Deadshot.

Her normals are better than CC's, her options are better overall than CC's, you can't really play the neutral game against her because she has no reason to want to try and get in...Wew it's rough.

Charging there's a ton of ways. If you just press 4 instead of hold it you can recover almost instantly. This catches people off guard and you can basically use it as a bait. It also allows you to use it in combos off of AAs or during regular 1 bar combos. And if you really need trait you can just end a combo in b232 or charge a full bar after MB Freeze (and if you learn the timing you can charge and then still get free pressure when they unfreeze).

You can essentially use it whenever, but its probably best used to extend combos for more damage/corner carry or after b232 since they'll be stuck. Once they're stuck in the ice field you can stay in AA range and chuck projectiles or you can go in and abuse the slowdown for much better pressure. If they're smart they'll probably just backdash out of the field, so if you have meter it can be pretty dirty to use EX far icicle and then trait, which means they essentially have to come to you.

That's just week one stuff obviously. Sky's the limit with his trait and Its very likely people will come up with more optimal stuff down the road.
Interesting. I didn't know that just pressing 4 would charge it instantly. Will have to try it out with any combo. I wish the 213 had a Cancel frame to end it with 4, since it's a soft KD, similar to Sub's F33.

been messing with level 2 trait midscreen. found a safe setup + pressure/conversion for Glacier Grenade. after getting the mb db3, do a jump in 1/2 > 3 > F4 then immediately F2 > BF1. if they jump out it juggles, if not you can continue burning* them in the freeze area. walk F23 to d1 grab should freeze them right in time. obviously trades guaranteed 100 something damage from doing a combo.

check it out. I haven't tested all escape possibilities/pressure variation, maybe backdash can get them out of pressure after the F4. will test more later.

I thought I was the only Cold dealing with this. I swear the air dash move is needed for this match up. You can approach this by trying to bait a drill so you can meterburn roll and just hit her with F23. Her anti airs are shit and once you get her to the corner. Just do knockdown into close icicle and NJP into a win cause she isn't waking up with nothing to stop you and your NJP nullifies all her wake ups.

Thanks for the bro-tip. I'm not too sure of her anti-air/wakeup options but this sounds like a good gameplan. The worst thing ever is dealing with the drills while yoshi is spitting diarrhea at you. I was ready to have this pegged as 3-7. CC feels severely underdeveloped in this matchup, so that air dash would have been ideal.

Probably super old news but when CC has his trait full at lvl 3. His shots allows him to shoot faster. Or rather his projectile speed is faster for both the of his projectiles. Unless I am seeing things.

I am having such a hard time fighting various characters with captain cold. Im sticking with him and will pick up super girl to cover the weaknesses for this character. I can't use the trait with half the cast because they can instantly punish me. So that takes away from the bigger combos. The Death-cicle block doesn't work because some projectiles go right through it. I just need to gain more experience because this is a character you have to be smart and anticipate or "TRAP" the opponent. I used to be a Flash player in the first injustice so you can obviously get an idea of how I liked to play a rush down character. i am just frustrated right now but i know once i get the hang of it, it will be worth it

the Top 100 characters in ranked has zero captain colds. He is not easy to use. If you are having success most likely you are playing scrubs. When you fight people who know how to get around his gimmicks it is a chore.

I feel getting trait against characters with strong range tools really hurts, is it worth the risk against BA/Deadshot/Fate to charge? Aside from that Cold definitely beats characters without ranged tools, which makes him seem like a solid pocket character for now. Buuuut it still is week 2 so dirty tech is bound to come through.

Except for maybe Deadshot you can charge trait in between blocking their projectiles and going in. I'd suggest learning the timing on it (you just tap 4).

It's a bad MU. Anyone who can play the game at full screen and check him from there beats him. It is that simple IMO. If you can manage to get ivy in the corner you have a huge advantage but any ivy should immediately MB roll out and get full screen.

Honestly there are only 6 other characters that you can even discuss being as bad or worse than CC right now. He is just not a viable character in this iteration and it has nothing to do with "figuring him out" or "spending time in the lab". Hell, Wonder Chef would rather play *Braniac* than CC.

honestly really enjoying playing cold now (or mr freeze as i like to play). I think the toughest match ups are clearly strong zoners, but rushdown characters he does pretty well against. You can pretty much set up a mine field of traps with up icicle, mb db3, df3 and level 2 trait, and some of the dirty set ups on knockdown with up icicle are really good.

definitely need to pick up another character though if you want to compete with the whole cast

The only rushdown character I've had a degree of trouble with is Catwoman. She's got some really nice long distance tools so you have to be mindful of your spacing. Her JI2 is also the god.

Pretty much just have to block and wait for something punishable on block with d2 if she gets in.

Dr. Fate and Deadshot are both matchups that are steep uphill climbs. Those tend to be the longest matches. MB Roll comes in handy, which is something I definitely need to incorporate more of in those types of mu's.

i can see a future buff for him being his trait auto charging like black canary

Does anyone know how to test how many frames are added to characters wake ups or attacks in general when in the frost field and MB frost field (df3) are active? And how do we test how many frames our start up is on projectiles after we have trait 1-3 active ?
