Community Concerns Regarding NEC '13

I haven't seen all of the VOD's yet, but I was pretty stunned when someone interrupted REO and Sonic in the middle of their match and asked them to move. In nearly 10 years I've never seen that happen at any competitive gaming event.
was it like mid round or mid game or in between games?

Man if it were that simple it would have been done, to make a port of a game perfect is nigh impossible. To make games for multiple consoles is literally like making 3 different games. No dev is lazy, every dev is pressured by time and money constraints.

I totally agree with soonk. Elitism only causes problems. Tournies need to be strict and ran seriously. When I was a diver, if you werent on deck when it was your tike to dive...you received a zero and they moved on. No ands ifs or buts. Now, Im being totally serious and genuine in asking this, is xbox better than ps3? Mk wise.

I play on PS3 and I don't notice any slow down during gameplay. Or is this only during a specific type of hookup?

A majority of players think it so. But you have to experience it for yourself....man, that sounds like morpheus from the matrix, lol

I have one of the last 60g truly backwards compatible ps3's and the only lag I notice is during the X-Rays. But since that always happens in the exact same way every time for all the X-Rays, I thought it was programmed to be like that. Are you sure it's not? If it is slowdown, it's a happy accident, cuz I think it's kool :D

As far as system preference goes, I don't care since I play on a Qanba but this system bashing has got to go. I've played on both and as long as the systmes themselves are well maintained, there is no difference in playability. In my opinion, anyone who thinks otherwise either needs their system checked or is just looking for something to bitch about.

Other than that, I pretty much agree with everything soonk said. Grassroots =/= amature or "hick". As I said earlier today in another thread, EVERYONE needs to treat all tournaments with the respect they deserve.

I will vouch for the stream station lag problem, in that we have had it in the past. At Red bank rumble sometime in the summer (I forget exactly which one) Claude VonStroke and I had a match on stream very early in the tournament. We get on the station and it is ridiculously laggy..... and we were playing the cage mirror, which just made it even worse. he ended up adapting to it a lot better than me, and i am not going to say i would have won if it was a regular station, but it hurt my chances and put me in a bad mindset for the rest of the problem. Even though i tried to complain about it, i am just an unknown kid, so I was not really paid attention to. Eventually SwiftTomHanks got on the station and was like what the hell, this needs to be fixed.

It's not that they aren't using the right monitors, it's the lag created by one of several factors. A major one is splitting the signal from the system to multiple sources (stream, commentary, projector, ect) before it gets to the players in front of an asus monitor. Another, in my opinion, is the ps3 itself. Some models, especially older ones, are prone to slowdown, especially when overheated and left on for hours in hot stuffy convention halls full of gamers. Their are other reasons but those are the main ones I know of.

People with no real or valid thoughts on this issue should not be posting here. There are some people I'm fairly certain have never been to a tournament that are discussing the differences between systems in regards to lag, saying that they are the same except for x-rays. This is entirely not true.

I am in full support of Soonk's points about the setups. I have had to switch between online/offline, consoles, controllers, monitors, and more at tournaments. It has never been the same twice, and when I go home I have to adjust to a different system, different controller, laggy monitor, and laggy online. I understand better than most people (barring tip-top players) how fucked up it can be, and how one setup can differ drastically from another for lord knows what reason. I notice this EVERY TIME I play on PS3. I have NEVER experienced issues like this with events running on 360. It has always been consistent across consoles, at least much more so than PS3.

Logistically, I understand that 360 is never going to happen. And it's not the TO's fault that we're discovering the shittiness of the PS3. I made a thread about this months ago, and was met with "but PS3 is better because it has a better controller, and slowdown during x-rays is COOL! Fuck Cyrax and Cage players that have to follow up their laggy inconsistent x-rays with combos!"

In regards to the Riu48 situation, that's fucked up. I'm not sure it even matters what the story is at this point, because from my perspective it honestly seems like the TOs were in the wrong here. There are standards of competition that were not upheld here, and this would be 100% unacceptable in any other sort of sporting event. eSports should be held to the same standard. I understand it's tough, especially when none of you are getting paid like MLG bracket runners are, and your numbers aren't even 10% of what they have. I feel for that. But, having talked to/read the accounts of many players at NEC, I can't help but think that the TOs may have been in the wrong here on some key issues. And, normally I'd still defend them because everyone's human, but this Riu48 situation is just too much. Brb, going to become a bracket runner for Olympics 2016 and let USA join the bracket after everyone's a day into the tournament.

I'm too sleepy for more coherent thoughts on this issue, perhaps I'll add more later.

The Riu48 situation is honestly one of the most f'd up things I have ever heard about in a tournament. I hope someone can clear the air about this because I am sure if I or a lot of other players did the same thing we would be watching instead of playing. Also, I really really feel bad for any player that Riu48 beat in this tournament since they probably paid a lot of money to get out to (and enter) the event. Rules need to be enforced, and we shouldn't have double standards for obvious reasons.

I understand the want to not DQ people to save their money, or whatever. But doing this too much can unrightfully cost other people their tournament experience they also paid for and are entitled to.

Alright, Im going on about two hours of sleep here, but there is just so much miscommunication and jumping to conclusions going on in this thread that I feel like I have to address it. It kills me that we busted out asses, stood on our feet all day and blew our voices out shouting for matches all day and broke our backs hauling and setting up gear for you guys to then be told that we are basically dirty scumbags who rig brackets and dont give a shit about the players. I killed myself for you guys and it is just utterly thankless and I will never do it again.

So first.

1. This isnt an MLG event. We took other tournaments into consideration besides MLG when seeding the brackets, however MLG events were also taken into account as well. Bluenine has placed top8 in at least two east coast majors in recent history and that was why he was seeded high in his pool.

2. RIU48 was not just dropped into a pool. RIU48 had made arrangements with us weeks ago to be placed into one of the last pools because he couldnt get there until late. If he got there before he had to play, great, if not we would DQ him. But that was weeks ago and I had a million things going on at the time so I forgot to add him to the pool when we were making them earlier in the day. We were behind the 8 ball on time because registrations for MK9 had been so delayed that I was focusing on getting the pools done and seeded properly and the RIU48 thing just totally slipped my mind and I didnt remember it until RIU literally drove up and I went "oh shit!" So I asked Phil if it was still ok to add him because it was my fault that I had forgotten about him in the first place and he said fine because those pools hadnt even started yet(and in fact wouldnt start until the next day, but thats a whole nother story)
So if you guys want to crucify me for forgetting to add RIU48 to the pool earlier in the day when I should have, go ahead. All I can say is I was working like a slave trying to make up for all the lost time due to registrations running behind and my mind was running at a hundred miles and hour with people breathing down my neck to get this thing going and I just forgot. It wasnt a conspiracy, it wasnt bracket rigging. I forgot to add him because of all I had going on and because the arrangement with RIU48 had been made weeks ago and just wasnt in the front of my mind.

3. The MK community has this unfortunate belief that it is the only, and most important community in the world and that all tournaments should revolve around them and cater to them. That is a happy fantasy world, but by all means continue living in it if it makes you happy. There are other games that have to have registrations besides ours. I was down in the MK room at 10am Saturday morning(after having been there until 6am setting up) and I wanted to start registrations at 12pm for MK9. When I came to the registration area the first game up was Marvel teams was supposed to start registrations at 9:30am. Can someone please tell me what fuckin Marvel player gets up at 9:30am? Yea I thought not. None of them, because they are all up playing casuals until 7am in their hotel rooms. The players fuck with registrations more than anyone else. So Marvel falls behind, the games behind it fall behind and MK9 falls behind, because its a domino effect. So instead of 12pm MK registrations got pushed back to like 2:30 pm. Yea that sucks. But its totally beyond our control and there wasnt anything we could do about it.
It took us about an hour to make the pools and seed them so that brought us to 3:30 and then we had to deal with 16Bit who had issues with the brackets, that were ultimately resolved(correct Bit?) and nothing about the brackets was changed with the exception of adding RIU48 later on which I explained above.

4. As to the issue of people playing in the tournament being involved in making brackets. Yes I had Swift Tom Hanks and Claude von stroke helping me(I had like a fucking hour to get this shit done guys, I needed help) But I and only I had the ultimate say on the final brackets, and I did not play in the tournament. I still say those brackets were seeded as best as could have been done. We took everything into account. Tournament placings, regions, relatives, team mates. The one thing we dont take into account is match ups. Sorry guys if you only want good matchups in your pools, then play fucking Kabal. Thats all I can tell you. So if you want to blow someone up about the brackets then blow me up because mine was the final word on it. Not Swifts and not Claude's. And I stand by those brackets and nothing was changed about them other than the RIU48 thing. I cant give people free rides to top8. Every pool was stacked with top players, the way it should be. You want to get into top 8? Be better than your opponents. Its a fuckin tournament! Your there to test yourselves against the very best, not see if you can sneak your way out of pools. Fuck.

5. The PS3/Asus lag on Phils stream station. I was not involved with this because Swift Tom Hanks and I were busy blowing our voices out running pools for 12 hours. But from what Tom Brady told me on the ride home. Tom was the first to bring it to Phils attention and Phil reset the Asus and the PS3 and then everything was fine. But Il let Phil handle this one, as I really wasnt involved with it.

All in all Im sick to death of this community, its elitism, its gimme gimme, serve me, cater to me, be at my beck and call, when I want, how I want attitude. We broke our asses for you guys for two days straight, brought tons and tons of gear that we spent our own money on, ran two streams simultaniously the whole time plus recorded matches on yet another station(Thank you Pherleece :) ) and because of a few problems that were beyond our control, and because people want to jump to conclusions rather than ask us whats going on, we are gonna get blown up and shit on for all the hard work we did solely for you guys and to try and give you the best tournament we could.

Fuck you all, that is all.

The PS3 has several issues, but it's also the tournament standard. IMO if you're going to be playing competitive MK, you should be practicing on a PS3. The situation with lag works both ways: if all PS3 players suddenly have to play on XBOX, they're going to be dropping shit left and right. There are other issues with the PS3, like the supposed 2ms USB delay, that also take time to get used to. If you're having stage lag issues, then you shouldn't be playing on the laggy stages. Stick to soul chamber, courtyard, and deadpool (or pit day, but fire effects are what really slow the game down so use at your own risk).

The issue with brackets has been brought up to Phil before, and his responses were basically:
  • They don't have the staff to satisfy everyone regarding the brackets.
  • The TOs have a very hard time telling 'no' to both their friends and well-known community members because they get very sensitive about each player's situations and wasting people's money (for example, if a player is 10 hours late because his flight that he paid $500 for was delayed or whatever). There was also the implication that the TOs don't have the wherewithal to deal with potential player outbursts or temper tantrums if they don't get their way.
Note that I don't speak for them at all, I'm just recapping what Phil said on stream during the whole 2/3 or 3/5 situation came up.

Winter Warz has recently placed top 5 at T13 and Season's Beatings as well as top 16 at MLG Raleigh. He has tournament wins over Maxter, Forever King and Tom Brady. I understand that player seeding is not an exact science but I cannot see the case being made for Blue Nine being a higher seed. It just makes no sense.

It all stems down to this and I am going to say this as bluntly and in the most basic form that I can because I voiced this opinion about 2 months ago and got blown up...

If we are to play a game COMPETITIVELY, as in for money, against the best players in the world...why are we catering to players that are A) Late, B) Not professional and C) Not our problem.

If we are to play a game COMPETITIVELY, as in for money, against the best players in the world...why are we not using Asus standard monitors at all tournaments? If I see a BenQ or Phillips monitor at tournies I cringe, and just know that is where my match will be. Ask Jimmypotato about how that effected him...

If we are to play a game COMPETITIVELY, as in for money, against the best players in the world....Why are we not using the best system for the game? We have known for some time now that MK plays BETTER on Xbox 360. If any of you PS3 players are going to bitch about the controller, suck it up because Xbox players had to adapt from Day 1. Buy a converter or dual mod your sticks, because the frame drops ARE noticeable.

If we are to play a game COMPETITIVELY, as in for money, against the best players in the world...why have we not eliminated Bracket favourtism? I get it, seeds are needed, but no clan mate, or local region should have ANY of their players in their pools unless the turnout is too low to divide them up otherwise. Having brothers play each other in pools or training partners is just insulting and tough for all competitors.

I just don't understand why these small concessions cannot be made to legitimize the games more. This isn't entitlement, at least not from my perspective, it's just common sense.

And thats why Winter was seeded high as well. Ultimately there wasnt any problem anyway because the top3 seeds in each pool got byes. The seeding determines the byes. And Winter and Bluenine both got byes. You are right Bit in that seeding isnt an exact science, but cmon dude. I took both Bluenine and Winters Tourney results into account. You can make a case for them being flip flopped but ultimately they both got byes. I gave it to Bluenine because hes been to alot more tournaments then Winter. But yea dude, it could be a coin toss. I had an hour to do this bro. I had to make some judgement calls. They both got byes so they both benefited from being top seeds.
