Edit- I fucked up the multi quote but whatever it’s about crime “but what about these mirrors in these games”

Well since you mention it yeah those sucked too.

The tekken community has been very vocal to my knowledge about not being thrilled with the current state of things.

SF I believe has decided to not just do one balance pass a year and I’m pretty sure Ed will be on that chopping block (though maybe not Bison or Akuma who many swore would dominate EVO).

Mk did MUCH better in diversity than I was expecting and I’m holding out hope this next patch finally gets shit in grear.

most of the recent dlc characters have real kits that helps free up their kameo options and does give them identity (you are playing the character not the kameo). I’m hoping they realized that the way to go and will be doing the best to catch up the rest of the undercooked cast.

oh and since you’re being weirdly passive aggressive about this shit, Yeah I didn’t run to the MK boards to mention how tekken finals especially lacked diversity.

There’s also the whole issue of how much character expression each game allows but we’ve all been over that to death. Suffice it to say I think MK absolutely has a ton of room to improve.

I think Rashid's level 2 is going to be nerfed to a degree. Shit's bonkers.
Somewhat coincidentally I kinda wish they’d actually up the power and use of all the supers.

Right now it feels very formulaic for some characters and super meter use isn’t something you think much about. One thing I dislike about mk is how their supers are mostly big damage, not crazy shit like tornado.

oddly SF6, especially the first year, felt similar with a pattern to when people would super and how, with almost all of it being lvl 3s for damage and the occasional oh shit or this will kill lvl 1/2.

that said….. yeah tornado is really really fucking good

Nice to see Punk win in SF6. Also dope to see Arslan beat Atif (who was on a tear) in Tekken 8, with side steps and good defense. His defensive style still pays off in the new game.

Is there a place to watch Dexy Dawg’s matches? I saw he made it pretty far but I missed his matches and I’m itching to see Mileena at a high level (what the heck happened to hourglass of rain).

You are missing the point.

Mirror matches are not a crime. Every fighting game has mirror matches. Besides, I mentioned Dragunov in this post yesterday.

The context for the last two NRS games is as follows: Mortal Kombat 11 had a mirror match in the grand finals of EVO last year (i.e., Fujin versus Fujin). Mortal Kombat 1 had a 85% character usage (i.e., Cage and Peacemaker) in the top 8 and also a mirror match in the grand finals (Cage versus Cage) at Final Kombat. Obviously, Mortal Kombat 1 just had another mirror match (i.e., Cage versus Cage) at this year's EVO.

Tom and I, among other players and content creators, are suggesting that NRS pursue a separate balance philosophy (i.e., more powerful characters universally, more emphasis on character archetypes, more complexity for the game's mechanics and characters, etc.) The apologists, on the other hand, have been yelling "shut up with the negativity" and "support the game and the scene".

not sure why you get so much push back on this point. I got pulled back into the MK series when MK X was offered as a PSN monthly game. I was dismayed to find a lot of learning resources online for my character (mileena) were out of date. NRS had already nerfed her combo routes.
when I watched Maximillian during his “tight vs loose” fighting game discourse, he mentioned that modern NRS is heavy handed with nerfs and prefers to keep character power low. From what I know, that was the mainstream FGC YouTuber take on NRS before MK1.
I wanted to get into MK1 at release this time for that reason. Thankfully the nerfs seem to be less heavy handed, but I was impressed (is that the right word?) by how buggy this game was on release.

edit: to bring it back on topic, it's evident MK has low character power/zoning because a vanilla character like Johnny with a fast mid is able to dominate the pro-scene.

If our Top 8 had four Johnny Cages and two Sindels we would never hear the end of it. People are applying very selective standards here.

Personally I think a tournament can be great regardless of the character makeup in Top 8, because of the gameplay. But it’s interesting how people use Tekken as the beacon of diversity to bash MK1, and then are so quiet when it’s the other way around.

Seems like the Tekken community was able to enjoy the tournament regardless, as was ours at Final Kombat.

I really enjoyed the top 6, the diversity was great, and Homelander didn't dominate the circuit as I (and probably many others) expected. It was awesome to see Javier and Zeeus in the top 6 (their first time in an Evo if I'm not mistaken), and Nicolas destroying with Rain was fantastic (he was the only one who used 3 different characters in the top 6). Sonicfox's victory was iconic. In the top 6, we had Ashrah, Shao, Rain, Ermac, JC, Homelander, Sindel, and Scorpion. Reducing the game to just the mirror match final is absolutely dishonest and inconsistent, especially considering the level of gameplay we had in the final.

edit: Sonicfox also used 3 characters in the top6, my bad

My favorite set of Tekken this Evo was the Loser's Final between Nobi and Atif Butt.

It's a mirror match but it's a blast to watch.

Nobi is a legacy Japanese Drag player, with some light beef with the Pakistani community. The year Arslan Ash won Evo Japan and USA, Nobi was quoted as saying "the focus may be on Pakistan or Korea, but Tekken is a Japanese game." (I couldn't find this clipped but he says it during the TWT interview that year that Ash won 2 Evos)
Despite being a relative newcomer, Atif blows up Nobi with deft side steps and psychic low parrys. It's very satisfying

YES!
Didn't get to hang around MK much as I was supporting some friends who were playing different games but the level of play I saw all around was very hype.

I get that the finals timeslots are based on entrants but I wish EVO would put in a better effort to showcase the game at its highest level.

Wish I would've practiced at all, probably would've made it quite a bit further based on my bracket path from what I can remember. Making it out of pools with several months of rust isn't too disappointing though.

I have disagreed with you waaay too many times in the past not to acknowledge the validity here. The diversity was more real than usual, although it definitely sucks that it came down to another mirror.

I was fully expecting Sonic going full heel and playing Homelander. Glad it didn't happen. This feels like the infamous Bob VS Bob Tekken 6 Grand Finals from EVO Forever Ago, where everything starts to get drastically less boring. My hope is that where we get the Destiny 2 Forsaken Arc, and they make up for a tragically dull Year One by pulling all the stops out for Year Two.
