Alright so like, how do I beat low poke on block into ground skulls?

If I do anything when it's supposed to be my turn, I get full combo'd into high damage. If I do nothing I risk him doing low poke into free pressure strings while I'm holding block like a dummy.

What am I missing here?
You can punish ground eruption if you block - as hard as you character allows. Like Scorpion's death spin cancel from poke. Just Shang can do much more damage on hit and more difficult to punish. :D

So Shang needs to take risk too for this respect - just maybe he is not punished properly, yet and more scary.

Dang, so there's no work around? I basically have to guess whether he will do the ground skulls or not. Dang lol.

Work around is that you do not let Sang close to do this. Just Sang Zones pretty well, too lol.

Multiple D3 can be more annoying especially if he low profiles your D1. :p

really all you have to do if block. if you see your opponent doing d1 into ground skull over and and over, just block and punish. dont get into a poking war, specially online. I think you can also dash back.

My Shang isn't the best yet since I only played him for 3 days vs other good players but everyone said it was solid. I've analyzed tech from tip players and adapted my style based on what I see them do.
I hope everyone enjoys.

You can beat it by dashing after blocking first ground skull into starter because he is -19 after you evade the last ground skull. Hold block buffer dash, do that a couple times I bet they quit doing Poke into DB1 lol and you can also flawless block the last ground skull it makes it -21 from -16 and certain characters can punish without meter by FBing.

If you use Cetrion you can punish all of his projectiles full screen with TP and you should be able to zone him pretty well.

Nice sets. A tip I want to give you though is to start doing f2xxHellsparks in neutral when you see people like to jump a little too much.

See if you character can do the dash one I think it has to do with dash speed. Use boob(Noob) to see how it works then try with your character. Set up ground skull at different ranges and see where you can get through for big punish. I think max range Ground Skull is safe but Noob goes through. Sub, liu, Jacqui and Scorpion can punish the hell out of it without meter and jax.

Btw it was nice seeing your side of the tournament, you guys played really well. You had good footsies and space control.

The hellsparks where punishable by the characters I was playing. It becomes -21 on second hit when Flawless Blocked and the first hit can be dashed into full combo with any move below 19 frames. I was kinda testing the waters. The first set CK showed he didn't know to punish it so I abused it. But STB Hellbringer and Based Pr0digy showed they knew how to flawless block and punish everything.
I think CK just didn't know the matchup but he is a good player.

He was an amazing scorpion(Reborn) I'd show you that one but the stream got cut off then I guess the streamers breaker shut off.

I hope other join the next tournament, it was a blast and every player had me on my toes, adapting and adjusting to them.

Not easy to pull of the punish at first but no excusion it needs to be practiced to avoid free chip and checks.
Especially against those who use ground eruption as a blockstring for chip and pushback. :)

Yeah, I freeze in that matchup too. We need to work on it, but we'll get there.

ArE You on XB1? I'd love to share tech with yah. Noble Raptor showed me some stuff that counters Shang and SS setups into KB off frame trap pressure. I'm always looking for good players to improve my game.

I'm only Soultaker but F2~DB1 has been a really important tool for me to keep people from jumping. F212 will not catch air opponents at all so it's a nice thing to do.

Speaking of it, I'm finding more success with Soultaker playing in the midscreen then trying to enforce a full screen zoning game. Soul Steal is such a good fucking move and it helps open up his mid range offense.

I'm on PC unfortunately, but I wouldn't mind seeing some tech.
Its easier for me to show you but you should check out WoundCowboy's, NobleRaptor's(has tech on there) and Sonics YouTube channel. I think Brady even has some tech in his channel.

One cool thing I can explain is Shangs 112 frame traps:
112 Soulsteal us unpunishable by many and it enforces things you normally couldn't do after 112 like F242 Frame trap into D4. Basically you condition them to respect Soulsteal and they let you apply pressure. I always test my opponent to see if they punish Ground Skulls or gaps in 112/F242 and if they do I condition with Ground Sparks or 114/F243 KB.

If you use Ground Skulls close at max range I think only Jacqui, Sub and Jax can punish it. But they have to flawless block the second hit unless its Sub Zero.

Raptor has Combo Guides and other tech as well.

I found something out in practice. If you back dash cancel into F24 you can blow up all wakeup options in the corner if you tine it right.

I think he meant to use F2 ground skulls (They aren't hellsparks dammit) if your opponent is a jumper on wakeup so that you can combo off it. F2 clips ppl out of the air but if you're committed to the full string or a stagger, you won't get a combo of the AA. Basically, if you think they will jump on the wakeup do F2 ground skulls and it will combo them for jumping.

Tried against Cassie and she can't even reversal nutkick, d1 or standing 1 at all between the 4 and 2.

Am i useless?

Try to flawless block it, the gap is not as big as people think and trying to squeeze in a button can get you punished (especially if the Shang goes for F243 instead, if you eat that KB it´s 290dmg)

There is an 8 frame gap, you can only interrupt with a 6 frame move, 7frame move will trade with the last hit. So Cassie’s best bet is FB. Flawless blocking this string isn’t hard, and you aren’t risking eating the f243 Krushing blow because if it hits you, you aren’t pressing buttons so you just eat the last hit without KB. Shang can cancel f24 into Ground Eruption to full combo punish your FB attempt, but that is full combo punishable if you block.
