MK11 Story Discussion Thread (obvious spoilers)

Lt. Boxy Angelman

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
Now that I'm actually two chapters into Story Mode and I'm seeing/hearing it for myself...it makes knowing how convoluted the whole thing gets hurt even worse, because it looks and sounds and plays out fucking beauuuuuuutiful <3

Also: Chapter One. The heartbreak. :(

Just finished it. It's funny how well it's directed and acted but how bad is it written.

Plotwise is an absolute mess. Plot holes, characters gets thrown in and out without any sense, other characters acts like complete idiots, the timeline stuff is explained poorly to say the least and at the end everything is for nothing because, as everyone expected, it results in a rebooted timeline (again).

But as far as production values, it's amazing. Very well directed and acted, nothing bad to say about it.

@Outworld Slasher Yeah, I started to enjoy the story a lot more once I understood that Raiden and Liu Kang were the protagonists.

I'm just wondering about what comes next? (Will that be MK XII's tag line? :p)

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
Pretty much MK 9 did the timeline the best out of the past few games, Kronika was unnecessary honestly. But like everything with time travel, time bending etc it has it's flaws but is also fun. I wouldn't say so much filled with plot holes but more so just things that were ignored and not explained as well as they could have been.

I think they should just have a lock on MK timeline, bring back the Elder Gods as the head of the foodchain who seemed ridiculously weak in this game with Cetrion being an exception. Like WTF? lol

I think The plot for MK 12 should be Liu Kang, Kitana and Raiden fixed the timeline for good, find a way to bring back the Elder Gods and perhaps have a multiverse in MK a la the first Injustice. Maybe we can see a white Scorpion or Latino Sub-Zero from another universe in the MK Multiverse?

I just started the story a little bit ago. I'm currently up against Skarlet with Kotal Kahn. That beginning with Raiden torturing Shinnok was pretty brutal.

Exactly. This is really at the core, Liu Kang and Raiden's story. It always has been since the beginning. I think Raiden seeing himself at the battle of Armageddon fighting zombie Liu Kang to the death against the backdrop of Blaze's fire in that amazing scene really pushed it to me. This is their journey and one that's been tied together through every game in the franchise. Raiden tried to set things right by defiling history and forcing his hand in MK9, which ultimately had to end in the demise of Liu Kang to kill Shao Kahn. But as Kronika said, every time she's destroyed and restarted the timeline, Raiden had always done this, and without Liu Kang at his side, he has always lost, be it through Armageddon or otherwise. It was always her intention to turn them against each other, securing her outcome in each form of history; OT with zombie Liu, NT with Revenant Liu, or otherwise. When Raiden killed Shinnok and began to swerve things otherwise, she had decided the time to reset had come once again, and decided to create temporal Armageddon herself, assured of success since every other timeline had unfolded in the same way.

Kronika really serves more so as the device that fulfills Raiden's three-game-long arc of setting things right; Liu Kang is ultimately the chosen one, he always "He Who Must Win". It was never Raiden who had to bring peace to the realms, it was Liu Kang. Realizing this, he sacrifices his godhood and immortality to finally fulfill what Dark Raiden has desperately tried to do in MK9 before his death with the message to the past. He always killed Liu Kang, and caused him to return as something darker in every timeline beforehand, but finally realizing his destiny; he gave him the life, and power he needed to finally accomplish the ultimate goal of stopping the cycle of death, realm war, and corruption that would always eventually lead to Kronikas desired Armageddon.

I completely agree a mess of a story with a great potential. I feel NRS got lazy with the story why not just in one shot show how the rest of the revenants die if they're not part of the story anymore. Reptile disappearance remains a mystery. Seriously I enjoyed the first chapter of the game but the rest was underwhelming.

Then be generous and explain what happened to the rest of the revenants and reptile. What happened to the Kombat kids? What happened to rain and Tanya??
im sorry that you like those characters but i rather them sit this game out then being jobers again and maybe play a role in the mk game

I meant story wise what happened to them. I don't mind them not being in the roster but the story should say something about them.

I don't know about lazy but definitely way too convoluted and they simply ignored quite a few characters like Ermac, Sindel, Smoke, Reptile, Stryker, etc, etc I think these have to addressed in the next game.

The best story mode NRS wrote was a retelling of their old story with a few new twists and turns, aka MK9. In MKX, they introduced a whole new set of characters and plotlines, including the whole revenant thing, but with the overarching storyline of MK4. And it was average to meh. Now in MK11, they decided to completely stray from the source material and make a new villian and a completely new story. And this might be the most convoluted messy story they've done so far. And now we're back to the beginning with the realms to be remade by Liu kang.

Moment of silence for all the cool, but poorly done story bits from the 3D era that could've been remade into something epic:

- Shang Tsung and Quan Chi forming a deadly alliance to resurrect the unstoppable army of the dragon king (Could've been done with Shang and Liu/Kitana)

- Reptile being abducted to be used as a host body for the dragon king, Onaga.

- Raiden's valiant sacrifice fighting to the end and dying for it, coming back as a darker stricter force.

- Onaga's return, his possession of Shinnok's amulet and his quest for the Kamidogu (which have basically become the "life force" of the realms, like Jinsei for earth).

- The war in Orderrealm between Hotaru's forces and the rioters wanting civil unrest, aided by Darrius and Dairou.

- Havik, the ruler of Chaosrealm being involved and being the devil's advocate of the story.

-Noob Saibot, and his team up with smoke (now revenant smoke) to build an army and take over the Netherrealm.

-Kitana and Sindel working to take Edenia back from outworld.

- The prophecy of Argus and Delia, foretelling Armageddon and the defeat of Blaze in order to stop it. The rivalry of Taven and Daegon, and the involvement of the Red Dragon Klan.

There's at least 3 games worth of stories in those ideas alone, and I'm not even going into the nuances. And before anyone starts complaining that all those stories sucked, think for a second. These stories have already been told and critiqued. NRS knows what they could do to make it much more compelling and interesting. They did it with MK1-3 and made what is considered the best story mode they've made.

They don't have to follow it to its exact conclusion, as they did with mk9. A few twists and turns, integrating the new characters in there, and maybe changing up the ending as well. So much potential, and this is what we got. At least the acting and the directing was great.
