Reexamining the Leaked Character Select Screen and Speculating Secret Unlockable Characters

Of course they don't get as mad. The lore surrounding those characters in other FGs isn't nearly as good or interesting as those of MK. So of course people are going to love even obscure MK characters.

That's why I became a fan to begin with... dudes shooting ice and freezing people? Gods calling in lighting to blast their enemies? morphing and stealing souls, etc. It's fucking badass.

So far it's 25 characters COUNTING pre-order DLC Shao Kahn.

The slot next to Kotal Kahn is selectable in the website. But I think it's a character that has not been revealed yet.
Next two slots are not selectable (secret characters?)

And Shang Tsung's slot is selectable.

I think there's at least one base roster character to be revealed.

I wonder if those two slots between the unanounced character and Shang Tsung are secret/unlockable characters or more DLC.
If they're DLC, why put three DLC slots insted of six? My answer: They will be updating the roster with each announcement. Shang Tsung has been announced, it was scheduled to happen so his slot was there.

So, in my opinion those two slots are unlockable characters.

This all makes so much sense.

My whole issue with it all though is the leak that showed absolutely all of the other characters.

The game developers know exactly who is unlockable or not. Why would they not put it on that character select leak? Are those DLC? I just don't know.

Honestly though, it really does seem like there are characters in the base roster that we aren't aware of...
That's pretty awesome.

This right here is the question nobody can answer satisfactorily and is the reason why you’re getting exactly what that leak showed. Why would an internal test build not show secret characters?

Do we even know when that photo was taken? It could've been at a point where the unlockables weren't ready to be played just yet. I mean, a few characters didn't even have renders on the select screen and some of the ones that did didn't look right or were missing masks and stuff. It's entirely plausible that a character or two weren't playable at that point or weren't in that specific build.

Yet everyone else was good to go, including characters like Cetrion? Feels like stretching to me.

All I’m saying is don’t twist yourself into knots when the answer is probably staring you in the face.

I mean, it's not completely out of the ordinary for them to remove characters from a build. Especially if they're working on them. (Also using Cetrion as an argument piece is weird)

All I'm saying is wait until the game comes out and see.

@mikeraskol you have a strong point, but it doesn't really solve why those extra slots in the roster page:

A: Exist
B: Are Greyed Out

It's not just an accident either because on the bio pages it has the same weird slots where 2 are unselectable too.

It's just strange.
What do you personally think it is?

The best part of this post is you citing series staples and fan favorites: Raiden, Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung :).

The leaker who said the text leak, didnt mention shinnok until the magazine typo, then went with it like it was obviously cus the editor saw shinnok in the game. He even said like "you really think they'd make that mistake if he wasn't in?" The guy may have seen the story trailer and saw shinnok in it. He's a floating head in the background of a stage.

Shang Tsung was heavily teased at the end of MKX, easy guess
Mileena is very popular and a safe guess.

The dude was a phony. (past the picture/story trailer that someone else showed him)
Oh man I've been pointing this out since the leak and it hasn't caught on. Those pictures were doing the rounds for weeks and he said himself that he had 4 different sources. Just because he leaked the characters from the image of the leaked character select screen on gamefaqs before anyone else people have taken his word as fact.

I do wonder if Tekken fans get as mad about Jin, Kazuya, Heihachi and other family members taking roster slots.
Not even close. It's one of the weirdest things I see from some mk fans. It's the opposite in Tekken. And the whole "the story isn't there" argument is pure nonsense.

In Tekken you have Devil Jin, regular Jin, Heihachi, Kazuya, Asuka, Lars, and Kazumi all from some sort of blood relation to each other. 7 of the characters in T7 related somehow lol. Almost every game has revolved around them fighting each other, or even more relation pulled into the story like Jinpachi, Jun, etc. The one time they removed Kazuya in Tekken 3 people complained so hard that they literally brought him back from the dead in Tekken 4 which was seen as super hype.

I really don't get it. You won't hear people saying "No need for two Jin characters when you can bring back Baek" in Tekken. It's an MK fan thing.

I don't have a clue. I just think its a little too cute to think the internal testing character select, which was never supposed to leak, didn't have these purported secret characters. Or that those secret characters were the only ones not available. I'm just trying to temper expectations because when everything tracks that leak people are going to be mad at NRS.

"OMG there's a new X-Men movie or video game or cartoon or comic book coming out and Professor X, Cyclops, Jean, Rogue, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Beast, Angel, Psylocke, Iceman, Gambit, Magneto, Mystique, Juggernaut, and Sabretooth are in it!!!"

Like what.

I imagine there are fringes of the Xmen fandom that cry out every time their niche favorites are passed over in a big adaptation. It's unavoidable.

How dare you leave off Storm and Kitty Pryde! Toad and Jubilee as well.

And trust me there are X-Men fans that would complain about not including The New Mutants (Sunspot, Moonstar, Magik, Cannonball) or the likes of X-23, Polaris, Domino, Cable, Forge, Bishop or Deadpool.

Injustice 2 had similar complaints. Why include doppleganger characters when Booster Gold, Katana or Mera are missing... It happens

IF there are in fact unlockable characters within the 25 base roster. My guess is that they are Empress Kitana and Emperor Liu Kang. The other choices seem just random.

adding this image to OP to replace the "current roster" one to better showcase the missing unknown slots.

I think the fact that u cant select the 27th and 28th is the big take away and they will be changed to silhouettes closer to release

I like this. I hope they do it at least in two weeks, so we can be more precise about unlockable and DLC characters.
