E3 2018!

Thoughts:

1. It's like a Hyper Fighting/Turbo Edition version of Smash 4. It looks very similar but they updated enough where you can't really call it a port.

2. EVERY fighter, from our boy Roy to Pichu. SNAAAKKKKKEEEEEEEEE

3. They added battlefield stages on top of omega stages, giving more variety to the competitive side of the game. They talked about all Omega/Battlefield stages being uniform, I hope that's true as it didn't seem like it in Smash 4.(Edges of screen seemed to vary for example.)

4. Seems like they made a lot of changes to characters and fine tuning stuff like attacks in 1v1 doing more damage. Air dodges have increased recovery the more you use them. Here's hoping changes like this make for tighter gameplay then Smash 4, personally I felt like it was way too hard to kill people in 4 compared to the older games. Too much evasiveness, screen size too big, etc. The 1v1 damage change might help this out.

5. Seems like they are attempting to balance final smashes a bit, or perhaps it's an optimization thing where it's easier for them to do traditional super-esque animations rather then turning into a controllable Giga Bowser for example.

5. The squid kids as a new character and Daisy as a new clone. Neat.

6. FUCKING RIDLEY, META FUCKING RIDLEY

7. I heard new tunes in there, please for the love of all that is Kirby keep adding more and more music. Smash 4 recycled a lot of music from Brawl and despite having some awesome tracks it felt a bit lackluster.

8. Needs more K. Rool

9. Buff Jigglypuff

10. Overall I'm pretty excited which I'm surprised about as I expected a straight port + Squid Kids of Smash 4(my least favorite Smash game) but it seems like they are serious about improving the gameplay so I'm hype for it.

11. Did I mention they added Ridley?

The game I'm most excited about currently is Fire Emblem: Three houses. Behind Elder Scrolls 6 and Halo: Infinite, but not much to say about them. And I'm optimistic but skeptical about Halo. Anyway, I adore the Fire Emblem series. Fantastic turn based strategy games.

Thoughts:

1. Right from the get go it seems like they are putting some focus on the story. FE: Fates really got into it's characters but at the end of the day the story was honestly terrible. And there was so little "world building" that you see in so many FE games, fans jokingly called the continent/world Fateslandia, because it's the only time in the series they didn't bother to name it. Seems like they are listening. We got a new continent and we already know about this lands God.(Who's probably a Dragon LBSH.)

2. Tasteful character designs. I don't mind waifus and don't think FE was the worst offender around, but it's easier to take the game seriously when there's less scantily clad ladies running around.

3. Units are "squad" leaders similar to how Advance Wars looks. Can't say how this will affect gameplay but they seemingly have formations and perhaps you become weaker as a unit at lower health levels. Only concern is that they end up having way less unique characters to recruit in favor of the "super unit" style of gameplay.

4. Switch! We knew this was coming but this is the first home console FE game since Radiant Dawn. Cool to see.

5. Weapon durability! Units now move diagonally across the "Chess" plane(just visually). One unit they showed(probably a lord/main character type unit) was able to attack or use magic or combat arts.(presumably like in Shadows of Valentia) Looks like some depth to the combat!

6. The whole flow seems way smoother, visually it reminds me of Radiant Dawn. Units have full 3D character models on the map screen and the transition from map to battle screens is super smooth. Maybe I'll be able to actually leave battle animations on this time without wasting my life away.

Overall seems really solid and I'm excited. FE games are always more of a hands on thing to really gauge the quality but I'm liking what I'm seeing.

I thought EA's and Square Enix's conferences were bad. Ubisoft and Sony did okay. Bethesda did great. Best conferences were Microsoft (which surprised me honestly) and Nintendo. The highlights for me -- from least to most favorite -- were:
  • Devil May Cry 5 (haven't played any of the past games except for DmC but I thought it looked cool)
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
  • Resident Evil 2 Remake
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Obviously I'm depressed about MK11 not showing up, lol. But aside from that, I was surprised that we saw nothing about Soul Calibur 6 during the conferences. No Splinter Cell is interesting because it was apart of the the same Walmart leak that leaked like everything else. I also thought for sure that Rocksteady's game would be here but obviously that didn't happen.

I particularly didn't like Sony's approach of focusing on their 4 major games versus having a huge 3rd party showcase like they usually do. It honestly just felt like Sony only cared about showing us what was going to make them a ton of money. They casually showed clips of Dreams in between all of their demonstrations but didn't even talk about it until the postshow. Didn't talk about Days Gone which makes no sense. Thought The Last Of Us 2 looked fine but I can't believe they still haven't shown any of the "zombies" Also what was up with Sony making everyone stand at one point and also making them move between rooms, like WTF?

It kinda sucks that Bloodborne 2 isn't happening, but Sekiro looks like a cool new IP so I guess it's a fair trade off. It's weird that Sekiro, Nioh 2, and Ghost of Tsushima are all coming out roughly around the same time considering their major similarities.

Resident Evil 2 so far is exceeding my expectations, but even then, the highlight of the entirety of E3 for me has the be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There were a few characters I was expecting to get cut so they could fit in more newcomers and all of that jazz, but then Nintendo was like "Nope" and decided to put in literally every character that has existed in Smash and then more.

Anyway, some other things: Glad about Fortnite and DragonBall FighterZ on Switch. Bethesda announcing Doom Eternal, Starfield, and The Elder Scrolls VI during the same conference where they are putting a focus on RAGE 2 and Fallout 76 was a very nice surprise. I guess that's about it.

Overall I think this E3 was pretty good, but it definitely isn't the best that I've seen due to the lack of games that I (and honestly a ton of other people) thought for sure was going to show up and also how certain conferences were handled. But when the good games were shown they were good, like really, really GOOD.

I tend to agree.. but there are some absolutely awesome looking games shown at every show. I really hope that GHOST smauri game comes to PC.

The new Smash looks fun, though I'll likely never play it (don't have a Switch or know anyone who does). The new DOOM looks pretty good, as the last one was.

The highlight for me was an ES VI announcement, even though it's probably 2-3 years away.

I've forgotten everything else, or simply had no interest in it.

The gameplay was him walking around while carrying stuff on his back while avoiding shadowy ghosts. That's about it.

Duno why there's little chat about death stranding
Besides the cinematic, all the gameplay was shown was the main character walking....and eating babies....hype ?Question mark?

I mean, the game looks sweet, but how the hell does it play???

Ngl was hyped for an mk11 reveal but alas, it wasn't to be. Now along with the rest of TYM on suicide watch all I can hope for is that Doom Eternal is at least as good as Doom 2016.

I'd imagine a lot like Mgs.

I think there will be an element of running about and then sneaking and stuff. Whatever the case I thought more people would be speculating on story/gameplay given how fucking amazing it looks and how bizarre the story is.

I would imagine you're a courier of sorts and get into missions involving evading ghosts and the mads mikkelson death squad while a really interesting head fuck of a story unravels.

Everyone is creaming their pants for elder scrolls (myself included) and that had literally nothing. They could have thrown that together the night before with 0 intention to start developing a game another year.

Seem to be the only one on the hype train. hideo kojima is one of the best producers in gaming history and has just been given his own studio and and shit tonnes of money to just create something ace. I will be amazed if this game doesn't make well respected titles like the last of us and god of war look amateur in comparison.

Who knows, I grew up on metal gear solid and barely any other game every measured up to this day. Also the fact that the gaming industry is littered with money grabbing douche developers and hideo kojima left Konami because he hated those types of business practices.

I'm just hype AF but can understand why other people wouldn't be if you hadn't played the Metal gear solid series or just didn't enjoy that type of game.

Still hope we get some kind of MK11 reveal. MK11 in 2019 would mean all my personal favorite series / developers in one year between RE2 remake, DMC, Naughty Dog and NRS so please give us MK11 lol.

Death stranding looks interesting but im kind of seeing why konami fired kojima, imagine if that was sonys only current series and in 3 years still nobody has a clue what the hell it is. MGS5 took idk 8 years and no profits and tons of money thrown at him, luckily hes at sony and they can afford to give kojima time cause they have a bunch of other studios.

I was going to agree with most of what you said till the end, druckman and barlog are top guys in the industry they are not going to look like amateurs.

Hyperbole I completely agree with you on that was a bit much to say. I still think it will be head and shoulders above both. I actually found the last of us really repetitive at times and I've heard the same complaint from a bunch of others the story and characters were amazing though. Think that the originality and imagination in the story we'll see in dead stranding will be the best of any big gaming release for a long time.

God of war and the last of us are emotive and awesome to play but I can't really credit them heavily for a totally fresh and out there story both are heavily reliant on child parental role feels which is a pretty established story arc and theme

I'm just excited for Soul Calibur 6, Last of us 2, and Sekiro.

I've never been disappointed with Soul Calibur, I'm just hoping for Talim and Yun-Seung to complete the roster for me since Zasalamel is making his return.

If the multiplayer/story/gameplay is anything like the first one, I'll be playing that for the next 6 years so super excited about that.

Sekiro just looks so exciting/stunning. A cool blend of old and new for the company.

This post will probably make someone mad, but I almost hope we don't get a new Mortal Kombat 11 next year so maybe when we do get it people can actually appreciate/embrace NRS games instead of quitting on them early every time and just begging for the next one because "it's guaranteed we'll get a new one shortly". It has happened with MK9, Injustice 1, MK10 and Injustice 2 so there's no learning from things as of yet.

Granted I want MK11, but I'm not gonna be salty if we don't get it nor do we have any real reason to be mad since we were not told it would be presented with it next year, people just assuming.

Looks like Uncle JBeezY has found a spar partner for Soul Calibur ;)
