What's new

Why do we let EVO treat us like this?

Our community is super negative in comparison to the SFV community. Maybe it has a lot to do with the community being newer?

There were more Nashs and Chuns in top 8 than Aliens, yet people are going nuts about how Sonic used Alien in one game. The only people who really complain about Nash and Chun are casuals and stoners, yet we have community representatives constantly using hyperboles when referencing the top tier in our game. We have casuals thinking that Alien and Mileena is the reason that it was at 8am and lost 400 people lol.

I see people getting frustrated when casuals come in and say "well why would people sign up and want to watch such an unbalanced game", when we all know that the days of +30 EX hat, Raiden's F12, CEO Tanya, etc, are long gone. It's our fault, though. We act like the game is a lot worse than it is, then get frustrated when people take our word for it.

SFV gets 8 frames of lag, the players just stay positive and tweet out good vibes. Imagine if MKX had 8 frames of lag. Man.

Obviously SFV is a bit more fundamentally correct than MKX. That doesn't mean that we can't be positive every once and awhile. People read TYM, people read Twitter. Don't use hyperboles bro. Superman 4 exists because of them, right, @Dankster Morgan.
Thank you.
This. This x1000.
While I won't say this ones on the kommunity, it's a stunning does of your (our) own medicine.
I have friends that don't get into MK because of the negativity in the community.

SfV community is actually getting a lot of hate lately, they're being so money hungry.

I watched TheHadou repeat for weeks on Twitter saying they'd like to see some new faces on commentary this year, asking people to send reels and resumes. Guaranteed that most of the 'preferred' community candidates did not send reels, people didn't tweet TheHadou expressing their preference for certain people, no one talked to Chris Ceglia.

And then, like always, people wait until afterwards and complain. That's not how you get results. We need to start being proactive as a community instead of reactive.
The NRS community's been complaining about this after every EVO and I'd find it really hard to believe that the powers that be aren't aware. I understand that this alone will not change things and something more proactive needs to be done but there's a fair bit of obvious politics at hand.

Also, re: "let your voices be heard"

I'm pretty sure the community let its voice heard when it collectively expressed its displeasure at the 2/3 format. Yeah, we got 3/5 top 8 instead but we all know that's still bullshit.

I'll be real, I love Ultra David commentary, but I can't stand Aris "sexual harassment is part of the culture" Bakhtanians. He will forever be more relevant than I am, and would outplay me any day I'd bet, but am I seriously the only one who is still not kosher with him after that whole ordeal?
You are not. And before someone goes "But he's changed, blah, SJW ruining everything, blah, blah.." Tell me that when you personally buy a Subway sandwich from Jared for your 10 year old. Makes no sense, right? Same thing with that duo commentating Top 8.

UD is a good commentator, but the whole point of EVO is to show mainstream viewers what goes on in the scene, part of that is having scene commentators. "But, they (KP, K & M, any other NRS player/commentator) lack experience, blah, blah..." Well, shouldn't they be ones on stream so they get the experience? When all fgc scenes trade commentators for Top 8 and GF, then some people (myself included) won't cry foul. The man consistently does SF web/pod cast. Fgc will associate him with SF first.

And the whole argument "ESPN is closely watching.." thing. Duh. Which fighting game company this generation sold 5 million copies and has a great mainstream fan base and is going to make more money next year with another game with mainstream appeal and a massive PR campaign (including sponsoring events like EVO) behind it because it ties itself to multi-million blockbuster movies? :DOGE

I can't blame them for looking ahead by padding their NRS resumes now.

WHAT ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE TWITCH CHAT WAS SUB ONLY. WHAT THE FUCK TYPE OF SHIT WAS THAT.
In addition to all the valid points everyone has already raised, this really bothered me too. I don't even care about personally chatting, but reading the chat is a highly entertaining part of these events. To literally have a handful of people chatting made the whole thing feel like no one gave a shit, and like I was damn near watching the event by myself.

Top 8 was incredible.....only because of the players themselves, not the event or whatever.

we live in a patching age
and the paulo's vision meme stands for itself, no further explanation needed

those +30hat days were just the tip of the iceberg in a franchise that won't learn from chapter to chapter
I still love the game myself but I can totally understand people dropping it because they won't put up with some of the shit that's still in the meta

MK has the setting, the roster, the engine
what lacks it's some more effective Q&A at NRS's offices

They complain here on TYM, in threads that none of the "Powers That Be" are generally reading.

The guys who are directly responsible for the commentary, generally aren't hanging out here filing through TYM threads either in the hopes of picking up commentary-specific complaints.

Mr. Wizard was also here in briefly the EVO registration thread, no one said anything to him. I doubt he's going to come here and read the results threads; and even so, he's not directly over the commentary. So if people want to get the attention of the appropriate EVO staff, they need to go to them directly.

In general, burying complaints here in our little niche of the FGC isn't worth what people think it is. If you want to make your voice heard, you have to go where the people who need to hear your message are listening.

Are ya' ready for MK11 kids?!
Okay, so first off, I wasn't there, nor am I going to pretend to be, but I'd like to think I know Foxy well enough to know he's usually always gracious about his experiences at events, regardless of how positive or negative they are, or how well he did in the actual tournament, so let's stop pretending that faceless armchair critics posting that he's throwing a hissyfit over not making top 8 actually count for anything in this thread. It does take a lot to get such an in-depth venting thread like this out of Foxy. :p

While we did get bullshitted out of MKX being FT3 the whole way ("it's not a fast enough game lololololol"), I do think there needs to be more clear cut legislation of the logistics behind FT3, and that it's not just some quality of life thing, because if we're being honest, there WAS also a lot of "just because"s behind campaigning Injustice to be FT3 at majors, which was a long way away from the economics MKX implores.

8am start time in the grand scheme is kinda first world problems, as a competitor in any capacity, anyone should be prepared for anything, but I can understand that it's obvious why EVO actually did this...

One other thing that annoyed me was the lack of losers bracket coverage, not just for MK, but for all games not SF5, last year we had 7 streams to accommodate this, now we had 5 with... SF5 taking up 3 of them concurrently?

And the commentary allocation, I could care less about the whole "we need our own boys on for our own game" babble, but K&M relinquished their places to compete in exchange for... a couple of segments at best with relatively low numbers of marquee matchups?

Overall it all seems to add up to the EVO personnel got too caught up in the lucrativity of having one of their tournaments featured on national television for the first time and everyone other community got fucked for it one way or another. There's a lot of other things I could talk about without going down a wall of text and while negotiations do need to be had, I think it's worth seeing how they prepare next year before psuedo-boycotting the whole thing.

What the hell are you talking about?
The idea that Aris is stuck in the stone age for calling Demo Sonya honest or whatever and how it must just be because "he's not an NRS guy". Again, this is likely to happen with people who follow the game internally. In fact, I've known K&M locally for several years and even I can admit they're also guilty of making some outlandish/misinformed claims about some characters/variations from time to time during their tenure as commentators.

Really? Dammit, oh well next year for Injustice 2 then.

Seating is a legitimate concern, but they design the tournament so you only have to be there for the 2 hours of your pool. If you wanna stand around to watch a stream for 8 hours, that's on you. Bring a lawn chair maybe?

I feel your pain though, judging 3 pools in a row hurt so bad.

Commentary is such a frivolous complaint. It's not related to the player at the event experience at all.

Time slots?? Really? Being on Sunday at the arena at all is a big deal. Someone has to be first, and this year MK had the lowest turnout, so it was MK. EVO was giving different communities a chance to shine on finals day in the arena. Otherwise it would have been GG, Pokken, Melee, SM4SH, and then SFV.

Not at all. I comfortably admit that i'm not very good at this game. Since you're getting personal, I know that I have won this little debacle. GG

The video explains everything. If you cared enough to know who is actually right, you'd watch it. But you don't, especially since you jumped to conclusions about my motive, and use the word "broken" for characters.

Edit: Your post confuses me the more that I think about it. When did my posts ever have anything to do with me? Maybe you're just trying to allude to me downplaying Alien as a way to dismiss the points that I've made. Whatever, it's like when you're arguing with a women in a very mild fashion and they start going overboard. Maybe you're still butthurt about that 10-0 that I dished you the last time you played me on MK.
Do you ever shut the fuck up about Alien? Every single thread you reply to mentions the character, like some sort of tourettes. It's criminal that mods let you get away with the massive amount of off topic posting you do. Jerk off somewhere else.

I agree with everything except the commentator complaint. David and Aris are apart of the MK community just as everyone else. And they both are great commentators and Aris is hilarious. Just because they aren't exclusive to MK shouldn't mean they "aren't one of us".

Like I said, I agree 100% with the rest. EVO is the world championship for Street Fighter, every other game is just filler and treated as such.
Sorry but they're not as knowledgable of the game as K&M or KP or Pig or Brady.

For the sake of healthy discussion. Someone pointed out that no matter what Evo will be Evo and this is true. Evo is "IT"for fighting games in terms of size and drawing power.

I would be willing to bet SF/Capcom Titles will always hold their position over every other game. Yes ESPN may shoot Smash, GG, NRS but at the end of the day it is about Street Fighter.

Evo will always be Evo, so why try to build up the game (NRS) at a tournament that won't present it in the same manner as others? Just because it's at Evo on a Sunday in Mandalay Bay? Whose to say if E-Sports continue to rapidly grow that espn will remain solely focused on Evo? CEO draws celebrity appearances (WWE/NJPW) it wasn't that long ago K Brad's Stone Cold Steve Austin entrance wasn't being blown up all over the Internet, even earning a mention from SCSA himself on his podcast.

Why not shift your focus to. TCW or a CEO, a CB or a KIT? E sports will grow as will coverage and you'll have your tournament at an event that will cater to it better than Evo has.

Evo is going through growing pains from rapid expansion. That is true. Though even when it adjusts to the larger size more than likely you'll have some of these issues reoccur in the year/second/third year of each NRS game. Do you think Injustice 2 will draw as big a crowd as SF and Smash next year or Pokken for that matter? It may out draw GG and Tekken but chances are you're already Third/Fourth down from the top by default (assuming two smash titles)

Again just for healthy discussion.
