What's new

Why do we let EVO treat us like this?

You just pick out the stuff that you can turn against people. Because I have said much more than that as my reasoning. Selective reading.
What?

I didn't choose to comment on anything else that you said. That doesn't mean that what I quoted was not said. It's not like I took it out of context.

You literally think that part of the reason that the game got shafted, was due to OP characters. That's the epitome of ignorance.

I went to watch finals and came to TYM for the schedule time only to see that MKX was already over, wth was MKX so early but I'm watching GG at 2:30?

Aris and UD are amazing commentators, though i agree that the twins also would have been stellar picks. 16bit and KP are also great candidates. but i dont feel like they arent 'us' and as such cant commentate. David pays attention to our scene and plays the game, as does Aris. The reason that aris and UD dont commentate more games is because they dont know them like they know MK, they pay attention to our game and we should be happy to have such great talent representing our game. Commentary is about getting the best of the best that also know what they are talking about, UD is hands down one of the best commentators, just in general, and having professional talent like him instead of some tool like DMS is a positive.
I watched TheHadou repeat for weeks on Twitter saying they'd like to see some new faces on commentary this year, asking people to send reels and resumes. Guaranteed that most of the 'preferred' community candidates did not send reels, people didn't tweet TheHadou expressing their preference for certain people, no one talked to Chris Ceglia.

And then, like always, people wait until afterwards and complain. That's not how you get results. We need to start being proactive as a community instead of reactive.

Are ya' ready for MK11 kids?!
Will reserve my full thoughts until after Melee and SFV are finished.

"I never hear any complants about Demo. No one complains about it. She's the honest hard working Sonya."
To be completely fair, I don't think this is just an Aris thing, this WAS a largely MK community wide notion until after KiT (which wasn't even a long time ago in the grand scheme of things) and then the goalpost moving hipsters, in classic hipster fashion of course, suddenly decided "she's not hype to watch" when they realized it wasn't a 'hipster variation' anymore.

I saw the whole thing with my mates. First of all, the streaming wasn't at its best and looped 4 matches back to bring the lag back. We even had to wait for almost 10' for the next match to start and this happened 2 TIMES!

Most of the camera views were shit. It was as if I watched a TV game. Very obvious example was the end of the finals SonicFox VS that French dude. All the bad things have only one good thing. For the first time, I saw SonicFox pulling his hat off and became serious.

And according to what @A F0xy Grampa said, I would say that EVO was UNORGANIZED. Being unorganized makes a bad example for yourself, and that's NOT GOOD.

If I ever come one day to compete against you guys, I'd love to, but I'll have to remember to AVOID EVO, if EVO keeps being like this for the next years.

Finally, I'm sad to see that the twins wouldn't comment on the Top 8, as it was previously announced.

My sympathies to all the MK fighters out there (both winners and losers).

I heard pig spends about 1k to fly to EVO and he is from US, now imagine us who spends far more just to get out of africa, based o my calculations, african players would have to save for nearly 3 years to have a 5k money just to be at EVO, if this is what we should expect experiencing i think we can give better use to the money at home.

So balance does not play a role in the community, peoples decisions to go out and compete, and TO brass couldn't care less about a games balance? Riiggght. MKX is a mess made by the development team. If they did a respectable job at balancing their game, we would not be having this conversation. So yeah, completely ignorant of me to think balance plays a role in the MKX world. We are known to play bullshit broken games habitually.

Does it matter?
How much of this was communicated with Evo staff? If anything, what was done about it?

The chair issue seems like the most difficult to tackle. They should've been there in the first place, but pulling 700+ chairs out of your ass seems to be the most unlikely solution to happen.

The commentary seemed fine to me, though wanting your scene to be represented by your players is completely understandable.

It's really unfortunate to hear that K&M came all this way and didn't enter the tournament, only find out that they weren't going to be commentating top 8.

I don't understand how seeking to resolve this issue before it happened could have been difficult. K&M are well-respected by a lot of commentators and have a ton of experience in front of large crowds and stream numbers. I don't see Aris and UltraDavid being reluctant to switch.

I didn't watch much of the MK pool play. But if the presentation was as bad as people are claiming, why was nothing done about it? This seems like the easiest issue to tackle.

Grabbing an official to point out poor camera placement and unnecessary down time can't be that difficult.

Lastly, tournament organization...

Reading the story about a TO just bouncing before LF of a pool is all anyone needs to see.

What was done about this? Was pool play really just a nightmarish experience?

I don't see the "let's pack our shit and go somewhere else" mentality being the best solution to all these problems.

Communicating and setting a precedent for the future of MK and Injustice is benificial to more than just future Evos and the NRS scene.

Not sure what to think of the tournament as a whole yet. But it seems that - despite the exaggerated hate - the scale of Street Fighter V as a competiive title is proving to be problematic, even for Evo.

As a viewer from home I thought commentary was fine (I don't pay attention to any commentary really) UD & Aris are a more familiar face to the majority than K&M. It's like the TNT NBA crew vs ESPN NBA crew basically. The nrs community knows its story lines already and to be frank the only storylines that matter to people outside the community is:
1. how free would the competition be to sonicfox
2. Will the grand finals be a snoozefest because everyone was free to sonicfox
(^Neither happened so yay?)

As for scheduling at 8am well that was happening no matter what. MK lowest number of the sunday games so it had the earliest finals. MKX started Sunday finals off with a bang just like many airdashers have done in the previous years. Only thing that sucks is that players had to get up early after playing so late but evo is in another transition phase and was going to have problems. Not an excuse for it but everyone pretty much knew going into evo that things would be a cluster____ because of the number of entrants for games and it would a miracle if things go right.
Having MKX finals on Saturday may not even be the better option since even Smash 4, Pokken and Killer Instinct on went later than it was supposed to go because of issues. Players might have been dead tired either way. At least you had the advantage of more viewership on sunday i guess?

No excuse for not having chairs around that is indeed messed up.
There were plenty of unexplored storylines:

- Hayatei vs Big D, lzst time they played was at CB and that had massive importance for Big D, where he lost.
- Dragon in top 8 over me, he beats me to make top 8 after having been on a losing streak.
- Michaelangelo, entered evo every year for years and finally gets his top 8.
- Tekken Master and how it was his first american tournament.
- The fact that GF of EVO both years have been sonic vs an international.
- Cowboy beats foreverking to make top 8

I agree with everything except the commentator complaint. David and Aris are apart of the MK community just as everyone else. And they both are great commentators and Aris is hilarious. Just because they aren't exclusive to MK shouldn't mean they "aren't one of us".

Like I said, I agree 100% with the rest. EVO is the world championship for Street Fighter, every other game is just filler and treated as such.
Ok ok, I can tell you right now, that all of the other potential candidates for commentary knew about tekken master before this tournament, where he's been and what he's competed in, this is the depth of knowledge i'd expect at minimum.

In terms of the technicality of it all, Aris and UD dont have quite the same depth of knowledge as the other guys, thats all im saying. You wouldnt want K&M commentating SFV.

I'm not trying to be bias and I watch all the FG streams on the main day, but is it me or this Guilty Gear stream is boring. I literally want to go take a shower until Melee starts.

The commentators are putting me to sleep, I don't hear the crowd, audio is low and nothing interesting seems to be happening from my perspective.

MKX should have had this slot even with less entrants, people seemed more into it.
Yeah it is pretty boring tbh.

@Gengar

I watch Aris's stream almost everyday and he has said multiple times he's barely played the MKX since KP2 came out and isn't that knowledgeable about the current state of the game.

Also someone tweet this thread to Mr Wizard and the Cannons

If we had Japan or Korea attending MKX it would all be a different story.

We just get salty and blame the characters because it can't just be raw talent that wins in this game. Everyone is trash, its just the character, this and that needs nerfing.

Can't expect other communities to respect us if we have no respect for each-other. The proof is in the pudding with F0xy, no respect for his skills just blatent 'Mileena op' bullshit. Wouldn't happen if he came from Japan, he would be worshipped and respected.

Sonic Fox might be the best thing we have in the NRS scene because although he barely addresses his audience at all, he pulls in the viewership.

Also aren't most the other games 2/3 and they are also really fast, I struggle to find a good reason to have 3/5 outside of top 8 (even though I support it). MKX isn't the only game where blow ups happen.

Evo has become the "Asian Invasion" and its mad hype because everyone knows and respects how incredible they are.

They don't exist in MKX so its easy to see why people aren't as hyped for this game at Evo. Its just like any other tournament that year.

How have the past EVOs been? Good or bad?

I would say maybe give them the benefit of the doubt considering it's a major transition from grassroots and 5k competitors for one game.

Evo is the biggest tournament there is. Thats just how it goes. Even the smash community figured that out, and they are older and far larger than us. Smash existed on its own for years, apex ect are still huge. but at the end of the day evo still is the biggest one there is. We will not escape it, we must embrace it. you propose that we make Ceo or something else our 'evo' yet none of those tournaments had any where near the entrants of evo, and our evo numbers fucking sucked as is. We are keeping up with marvel, a game that existed alongside MK9. 5 years ago.

I agree, no seating is shitty. that has to change, but i think thats part of the growing pains and transition to a larger venue. pools takiing all day also sucks, and us having the 8am slot super sucks, but someone has to go at 8am. Marvel is the only other game that coulda gone first, Xrd is hype and just put out new content.

lack of 2/3 was super shitty

Youre only mad cuz you didnt win. next time stay at home and watch if its so bad.
You had a great post going until the last 2 sentences. Was gonna say 3, but I also dislike DMS commentating.

Not really. Expectation were a majority of Alien and Mileena dominance as per usual after the last patch. If you do not think a games balance plays a role in decision making....I know better than that to let you try to belittle me.
it's widely agreed that mkx is better balanced then games like melee and marvel but those games still had better numbers then our game. balance has nothing to do with a game's popularity

To be fair, if you've to save for three years for something, I'd argue that saving for a trip to a fighting game tournament you can watch on stream literally cannot be the best use of those savings. I mean I'm in the same boat, I'm broke and if I'm saving for three years for something, it ain't gonna be a ticket to the States for an MK tournament
