General/Other - Smoke XL Robo Smoke Discussion Thread

Espio

Kokomo
Sub-zero, Mileena and Goro come to mind off the top of my head. Ranging from hard to slight disadvantage.

Lol, I saw that argument and understand what you're talking about: of course there's a 50/50, but sometimes you want mix in the jailing instead. It's not a tough concept to grasp.

God Confirm

We're all from Earthrealm. If not, cool pic brah.
Nah apparently smoke should just be played with mindless unsafe 50/50's
Thanks tho

Tough concept to grasp indeed.

what in the lord's name are we supposed to do against takeda? His pokes seem to annihilate smoke's, and once he gets a that string going (idk the buttons it's the one that hits overhead at the end with his whip) into ex kunai, I don't know how to get out. Phase doesn't work, nor does it work getting off the ground due to the huge reach, giving you phase forward as the only wakeup option, or get sucked back into pressure. I just played a takeda in esl challenger and it honestly felt unwinnable. Worse than gm sub zero. Help please. Yes this is a salty post.

That MU is actually pretty OK for Smoke, I'd say 5-5.
The string you mean f122+4 into Kunai used to have a gap, it doesn't anymore, and there's no gap for EX Kunai either (unless delayed)*, just gotta make him whiff so using Phase Forward is your best option, prioritize your meter to this Special, and if you see him delay EX Kunai for a HTB setup, use EX Phase to get out, practice this on reaction.
Also, if you're getting hit by his pokes too often, I'd suggest using F21 or F4 strings, as he has no low-profiling option.
Another thing to note is that B21 will whiff on Takeda crouchblocking, UNLESS the B2 hit him on (crouch)block, so you CANNOT do B21 on WHIFF, keep that in mind.
Lastly, Takeda is one of the very few characters that can punish your Smoke Bomb (after a string) relatively easy, so don't be predictable with it :)

EDIT: there IS a gap after f122+4 EX Kunai however, f122+4 follow up by Takeda beats Phase Forward

Smokes f34 I find catches many off guard, it's -11 though so is it safe usually? Can it be punished? Because it's weird usually when I do it and the opponent blocks if we both go for example an uppercut (d2) I land before my opponent does.

It seems like when you delay the 4 input it's makes it less negative but I never have bothered much labbing it

So there's been a lot of Smoke making it's way into CEO this weekend. Is Smoke that good or is it lack of character knowledge in the same way that HT Lao has taken matches off people? I personally think it's lack of experience against the character that lets people get away with a lot of this.

Sure player skill is taken in and they play these characters at a very high level but honestly these guys are getting away with a lot.

Smoke's good, I wouldn't say on par with the current top tier but more positive MU's than negative. I've also noticed the lack of MU knowledge during the tournaments, even still.. knowing what to do versus Smoke can mostly be adapted to so I'm looking forward to Evo.
Either way, props to PL for committing to Smoke, it was looking good. Would really liked to have seen his set vs Hayatei.
