CHOMP CHOMP HISS! - The Reptile Matchup Thread

I think Scorpion is a good matchup for us.

I'm sure we can punish a blocked spear from any range, and I assume dash goes past hellfire, allowing us to punish pretty easily.
If it's in our favor, it isn't by a whole lot, maybe like 55:45? But, I feel that, if they play it right they can beat us, as to why I think it's even. Hellfire's tracking can catch us out of elbow rushes. But if we see it coming and jump towards when it's coming, we can tag them with an elbow dash. We can punish spear in general, blocked or not. If we tag them with acid spit as spear hits us, no combo. So, yeah, I personally feel that it's even, but, if it's in our favor, not by much.

Yeah, it's definitely not that far in our favor, but I do feel we have advantage.

So maybe 55:45? Cause I don't feel that it's far enough in our favor for a 60:40. What do you guys think? Also, anything else to add to the write up that I did? Anything I missed?

Okay I have to say, after playing almost all of the matchups at PDP this weekend, Liu Kang was by far the hardest.

His low fireball ducks spit cleanly so you can't zone. On top of that his close up game is so much better than ours.

Anyone see anything I didn't about this matchup?

Yes, that is true, but what makes it hard for him to zone is forceballs. He can't air fireball you during forceball animation...it just whiffs. And if one is on screen...obviously like with every other character not Raiden, it forces you to either just block or attempt to jump it, which allows Reptile to keep up in his zoning somewhat.

I found that I didn't have an opening to shoot a non EX one due to his fireballs being pretty damn fast. I tried jumping over and blocking them.

Kung Lao and Sub Zero typically create lots of problems for me.

With Kung Lao it is so hard to predict what he is going to do and he is effective anyway on the screen. I get caught alot by ice clones against Sub because I like to rush down the opponent a lot. However I do find myself pretty successful against Sub in a projectile war, but it's hard to do against a good Sub. I also occaionally have problems with Sonya. Like Kung Lao she can be all over the place and hard to pin down.

I've gotten pretty good at predicting Smoke and Ermac, but Ermac still does a ton of damage if he ends up connecting. Raiden is also annoying at times especially when I whiff when trying to punish the flying move.

Sub Zero is next indeed, I will start somewhat of a write up when I get out of class tonight, before I go get LA Noire. Sub, I am just gonna' speculate now, is prolly' not in our favor at all. Ice clones make it so hard for us to approach.

Kung Lao is hard for everyone, but for Reptile, we probably are one of the characters that have an easier time vs him. Low hat is punishable by dash, luckily for us.

Sub is weird...you have to be extra careful in how you zone him. You have to spit to stuff things, and forceball to come out on the projectile trades and to catch slide. Very annoying tbh. He also neutralizes dash for the most part. Luckily, X-Ray does plow through clone, so we sorta shut down his zoning once we have full meter.

I still feel that the match up is against us, but, we do have tools to make it workable. I'll do a write up tomorrow, I'm sleepy from all the LA Noire.

Yeah the thing with Sub is that a lot of times I run into an ice clone when I wake-up with elbow-dash/slide (I guess technically only slide). And I also get caught by his slide often since I anticipate an ice clone but get hit with a slide instead. I also get hit by slide when I am acid spitting, but it is so satisfying when he ends up sliding into a forceball.

Also, I recall getting frozen by the ice clone during my xray a few times before. Maybe it was because he was right next to the clone or something? It's weird becuase there have been times when I hit him with the xray and the clone is just sitting there as I am doing it, and other times I get frozen instead.

Btw, THTB were you at the PDP tournament? I was hoping to see some Reptiles in there but from the streams I've watched there were no Reptiles.

And Milky I am interested in seeing your write-up. I feel like Sub is kind of easy to beat in a projectile war but besides that I think he is really hard to fight.

Damn I should be writing my essay but I want to play so bad... can't stop thinking about MK haha.

After I finish my finals today and I get home, I will definitely write it, just like I wrote the Scorpion one. For the record, I feel like it's against us as well. Once we get going it'll be tricky as all get out for them, but, us getting close enough to do damage is tricky as well. Those ice clones stop a lot of our approach, and even if we tag him with acid spit for a trade, we still get frozen. We don't get comboed, but, we still don't get an approach chance.

No, I wasn't at PDP, unfortunately.

General sidenote about EX dash...there's enough leeway in between the first and second hit that fast uppercuts for sure stuff it if you crouch block it, and you can likely get tagged with an armored move from stand block. I'm not sure if everyone can uppercut punish it, but those that can will give Reptile a lot more fits in the corner.

Vs Sub...some more stuff I've come up with...

Obviously from full screen, your forceballs are a lot safer and a lot more dangerous for Sub if he's not sitting on EX. I'm finding it more and more effective to play lame from full screen, and force him to come to you. From full screen, you're at advantage. Fast forceball is good here. He has to use EX freeze to deal with it, and if he doesn't and you both trade, it'll be in your favor, for sure, because nothing for him is guaranteed at that range. So pretty much baiting him into using EX freeze will help out a ton. If you get a forceball hit without getting frozen, dash in and start an offense. STAY IN HIS FACE IF YOU DO START PRESSURING! Do not let him get enough breathing room to clone, or you risk getting hit by it.

I think the match is much more manageable played like this. Just my experiences.

I figured that out last night too THTB vs Sub actually. Just gotta remember not to go in too hard vs Sub when you don't need to.
sucks about ex dash not being safe vs certain characters, when ppl get better theyll blow it up

Yeah, for sure. REO discovered it while we were playing a little while ago. I'm pretty sure it's not safe vs everyone (I wouldn't be surprised that every character can uppercut it from crouch block).

Yeah it's pretty free to people mashing Xrays. Some fool mashed it out on me at PDP and acted like he meant to do it, haha.

For sure. It's still a great move, and in a lot of cases, still will get you out of the corner. Just, if it's blocked, you're not getting out for free. Sucks that it's a free X-Ray in a lot of cases.

EDIT: I really just thought about this...fuck...Jade can just EX glow after, and just do a combo that'll throw us BACK into the corner.

Oh yeah a few more things I wanted to discuss:

1. I forgot about it, but during the Tom Brady and Silent show Tom said that Reptile's hitbox disappears against jumping opponents, but that isn't true at all, and I wanted to clarify that for anyone who watched it.

2. Who do you guys think makes a good alt for Reptile? I've found that Noob seems to cover most of what I find are Reptile's bad matches.

THTB

Arez | Booya | Riu48 - Rest Easy, Friends
He's not talking about Reptile's hurtbox...he's referring to the hitbox. At least I think.

An alt for Reptile? I wouldn't say Noob...Jade beats both characters IMO, and Cyber and Sub are still fairly difficult matches. Idk for sure...probably Kung Lao.

I find that Noob is better against Sub than Kung Lao, just because Noob's Tele Slam is a hard counter for all of his keepaway. He really makes Sub rush down.

Jade is weird as hell man, I don't know who's good or bad against her... can't you rush her down?

And Tom said his hittable box disappears. He said that you can get away from jump ins for free with it. Maybe that's how it was in an old build?

THTB

Arez | Booya | Riu48 - Rest Easy, Friends
Sub can stand in front of clone...at that point you can't teleslam, but he loses a good deal of functionality of clone. Noob's shadow stuff is also fast enough to really check Sub if he tries to clone or freeze.

With Jade, somewhat. She's basically like SSFIV Rose, only probably better. If she has meter, it's difficult to rush her down without getting your pressure halted by EX glow and then smacked by a 30-something% combo that has stupid good wall-carry. Meanwhile she has some really solid pokes (u3 is sooooo good lol).
