Zoning in MK10

Sagat could chuck fireballs at you like crazy but his movement speed and backdash speed is laughably bad.

Chun, Vega, and Bison have incredible range on normals and the absolute best walkspeeds but have no reliable anti airs and have "charge attacks" that wont allow them to rush down hard and do max damage at the same time.

Its basically what everyone has been saying so far in this thread. No character should have the best of two worlds. They should either have great mixups/offense, great footsies, or fireball game. Not all of them, like Kabal and to a certain degree, Mmh or even Zod.

Either that or have a truly balanced character like Ryu BUT they should be the most careful trying to make a jack of all trades because if he is made even slightly too good on footsies, mixups, or runaway then youll be seeing tons of winning matchups in his favor in the future. There should really only be one (maybe 2) jack of all trades like in sf4. @colt

I feel like in SF4 the mechanic of different health ratings for characters makes balancing a little easier for them too. If they dont want to gimp a character's options they could just lower their health or stun and have them be glass cannons.

Itd be cool if Mortal Kombat had health ratings but thats asking for alot.

If they keep it how it was in MK9, but tone it down with how much meter they can build... it should be alright.
Agreed NRS needs to tone down meter building in MK10, not zoning IMO. IGAU and MK9 have some characters that get like 12 bars a game lol.

What's the point of a random Krypt?
I wouldn't mind if some specific proyectiles could trade or absorb others, but only as long as they were only a few, and it should probably have to be tied with meter. If you make all proyectiles trade you would be changing the way the whole game works. Im also not a fan of an overall nerf to zoning meter building or reducing proyectile damage over time, as it would hurt chatacters like Shang Tsung or Sindel who are no really good to begin with. What is needed is a better character desing, so we don't get another character like Kabal, who can zone you for days but also has the upper hand once you get close to him.

MK9 zoning was ok at best. What made chars like Kabal and Kenshi so good is that they have sick pressure up close.

If anything buff zoning to make it viable. You guys r so spoiled. You never have to face sagat or guile type of chars with good defensive options and good zoning.

What I'm most hoping for is logically balanced designs.

It's ok for a character to be specialized in zoning, but then that character should be weak up close and have under average offense/escape options. If a character has powerful mixups and high damage combos then he shouldn't have good projectiles or anti-zoning tools. And if a character has "a little bit of everything" then he should be average at everything. Not godlike at zoning, godlike at footsies and godlike up close.

In other words, no super characters pls.
But Freddy was dope yo

If you have not learned by now, the cycle with NRS fighting games is...

1) A great zoning character is introduced in version 1.01. Online scrubs cry. TYM scrubs cry. 16 Bit invents a corny amalgamation between the character's name and "broken" and declares that he/she is the most broken in fighting game history.

2) Paolo succumbs to the pressure (again) and the character is consequently normalized to mid tier or worse in version 1.02.

3) M2Dave throws a tantrum on TYM, Twitter, and numerous podcasts for an entire year.

4) A top tier zoning DLC character is released. Online scrubs have moved on to play the new Call of Duty game. So has 1/3rd of the TYM scrubs. After two years of testing the beta and one year of playing the game in tournaments, 16 Bit has finally learned how to play the game and complains a lot less, which means...

5) Zoning players can finally enjoy playing a very good zoning character.
Can you stop pretending you are a zoning guru? You don't play any true zoning characters.

You play characters with awesome zoning, who are also really good up close. Deathstroke and Freddy? Funny how your "zoners" have a nasty 50/50 game up close as well, eh?

Your definition of zoner seems to be "character who has zoning tools", which is BS, because that would classify Superman and Aquaman as zoners. Being a zoner is not having good zoning tools- it's having good zoning tools, and having crap tools up close. This is what makes them zoners- they HAVE to rely on their distance/control game.

Sinestro, Raven and Cyborg are zoners. Deathstroke is not a zoner: he's a balanced-mix.

This

Strong zoners are fine IMO but I think if you're going to have strong space control and keep away you should have bad footsies or recovery to allow punishing when the other person gets in, that way each dominate each other in their perspective ranges. Strong zoners that have a "get out of jail free" card.. *cough EX Nomad Dash & Teleports cough*.. is pretty lame and makes it all the more frustrating when you get in a zoner's face and they just run away so easily.

Glad im not the only one noticing this design issue.

Zoners should be zoners. No more of these M2Dave characters that are awesome at keepaway, and then 50/50 you when you finally get in.

Are ya' ready for MK11 kids?!
Nope because I was at EVO 2012 and that was what dominated top 8 until PL repeated as champion.
Dominated.. in two matches? One of whom didn't even know the Kenshi matchup? I think you need to adjust those Edenian binoculars man lol.

I can see where this comes in for EVO 2013, given PL's and REO's antics with Kabal against DJT's Cyrax and MyGod's Sonya, there were a lot more mixed opinions that year from the outside FGC. But 2012 seemed to be the most well received of the three years that MK was at EVO honestly.

Top Tier had great Zoners but they also had solid in-your-face games as well..

The bottom tier had some great Zoners BUT since they were very one dimentional and nobody respected their game up close they suffered.

So you have to realize these things.....

Endeavor

I'll live a villain, before I die a hero.
Look all I'm going to say if the character has amazing keep away, please for the LOVE OF GOD they should not have amazing normals and better and or comparable normals than aggressive characters "KITANNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I hate zoning. In test your luck, there is a feature called armor which you have to uppercut loads to break. I would happily spend all my meter if it gave me armor. But to make it fair, armor only protects from projectiles.
So you run to your side of screen and zone all day long. I build meter from block chip damage. Spend ALL my meter for armor. Force you to have to get in close to hit me but I have no meter. Time limits of how long armor lasts are subjective.
You dont build meter from blocking and taking chip the person zoning you does. You build meter for taking damage, which is not the way you really want to. SINDEL IAFB LEVIFBS ALL DAY.

SINESTRO w trait is super good everywhere though. That move is what takes him from being uppermid tier to top5 imo.

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
The zoning in MK 9 was good, definitely not flawed more like people crying over "not being able to get around zoning" that's not the game's problem lol. Then there's the issue of a lot of people seem to think "only Kabal, Kenshi and Freddy can zone" so untrue...I zone all the time with Scorpion, Ermac, Sektor hell even Night Wolf. I really believe a lot of characters are played with the mentality of "one trick pony" style, me I don't believe in that philosophy. I believe if you experiment with someone and it works(this case zoning) it can work, I've seen guys like CD zone with Kitana well, people doing it with Mileena, several characters.

FTR, I'll give a player who can zone with nearly everyone they use more credit, props then a player who is known for winning with top 2 characters...

noob spambot.
lol never heard that one. Have to admit that's a good one.

Spank me for posting when tired. Building meter from being hit is good but building meter from repeating the same special move is....... dumb.

Building meter for getting hit is scrubby. You basically reward the plAyer with shitty defense and punish a good offensive player.
