To be honest I just didn't want 4 guests in the first place, so I'd like them to be as low tier and unplayed as possible, so that I can just forget about them.
Well too bad all of them have been top tier at one point...except for the obvious one...fucking NRS put the character in the game don't even pay attention to him, buff the shit out of Jason *grumble grumble*

With everyone requesting their numerous wanted characters for a KP3, if they just ditched 4 guest characters we could've had people like Noob, Fujin, Sindel, Kabal, etc. so dumb

It is better this way
I'm sick of Sub-Zero. Everything about him bugs me, I wish he was more fun and creative. The way the community acts with him is dumb too. On one side you have people who only look at what he does well and ignore his issues, on the other you have people who only look at his bad matchups and ignore the characters that he dumpsters. Seems like nobody wants to be real about him, like you can have a good discussion about every freakin character in the game except for Sub, and to some extent Mileena.

Is Mortal Kombat the only game that uses "guest" characters? I know Tekken 7 has Akuma but it's kind of different since he's already a character in SF. Think Soul Calibur had Yoda at one stage? @SaSSolino @CrazyFingers
DOA has Ryu Hyabusa
Soul Caliber 2 and onwards all have guest characters
MKA Armageddon you can make certain characters like Goku
Injustice has Scorpion
I think Gon in Tekken 3 is a guest character

And just for shots and giggles
Smash Bros and PlayStation All Stars have guest characters:DOGE

I'm sure there's more cases of guest characters in Fighting Games but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

Yeah, NRS are over doing it with the guest characters. 1 is enough in all honesty. The time, resources, manpower, and money it took to make the other 3 could have been better spent putting more in-universe characters in the game. I also think that (in any fighting game) guest characters should be banned from tournament use. Guest characters are supposed to be a novelty only. They're not supposed to get so much attention. NRS wasted a lot of resources putting so many guest characters into MKX. (IIRC back in the day with Soul Calibur II guest characters WERE banned from tournament use. Don't know why the hell that has changed in recent years.

Why doesn't NRS just make a new IP that is guest characters vs. each other? That way we can keep that nonsense out of our MK, and the people that foam at the mouth for that kind of stuff can go out and buy that.

While I would prefer more in-universe characters, the truth is the guest characters are their biggest sellers since they greatly appeal to casuals. So each Kombat Pack was split between in-universe and guest to roughly satisfy both parties.

Since guest characters sell the most, they didn't waste resources, they generated increased revenue; the purpose of any consumer product.

For an IP with nothing but guest characters, licensing fees and issues to create a full roster is likely one of the main stopping factor there.

You are right, but a KP can't be half guests, half actual characters. It's just too much.

I understand that they generate value and appeal to casuals, but hardcore players are those that keep a series alive, buying every game, every DLC and staying active in the game for more than a few mounths; and there is just so much bullshit marketing can do to an IP before even fans get tired.

Apparently it can be, since they did it not once, but twice.

Hardcore players may keep a series and title going, but it's the casuals and their impulse buys that actually generate the greater revenue.

The average consumer has a short attention span today and buys something at the crazy over-inflated prices DLC release for now, plays it for a week, and then moves on to buy the next thing. This is why so many developers now rush with DLC at Day 1 and shortly thereafter, and why a game is generally reported as a "failure" if it doesn't reach a certain financial goal after only a few weeks.

Mass early sales will _always_ appeal to publishers more than longevity of an existing product, which is why most games have support lasting only a year or so.

With Mortal Kombat XL, at least the guest characters are optional and you don't need to purchase them at all. In fact, buying only the two in-universe characters separately is cheaper than buying the Kombat Packs.

What I read is: "Meh fuck that, they just want a shit ton of money now and worst case scenario they have others IPs". Did I get it right?

Every publisher wants "a shit ton of money," especially with the insane cost of game development today.

While, as I mentioned, I'd much prefer proper in-universe characters, if releasing four optional guest characters is what helps accomplish that and it prevents them from resorting to other forms of revenue generation (micro-transactions), I'm not going to freak too much.

Is there a character in MK Fucking X that isn't so annoying to play against? Every time I have played MKX last week or 2 I have just been annoyed. I swear these characters are more annoying to play against than having to take out the trash for the 68th goddamn time today
