Sonya could beat smoke 7-3. Probably one of my favourite mus in mk9

And my most hated ;_; Playing your Sonya = nightmares.

Most sonya's played the MU wrong you have to be somewhat patient during the neutral game but when you see an opening you have to pull the trigger and just go balls deep. Most Sonya's either were too aggressive in the neutral game or weren't aggressive enough when they got close.

ermac walking up and grabbing wont help because smoke can hit him as soon as he sees mac dash up for huge combo punishes.

Ermac can do more then grab. He has iafb and a d4 of his own. He can walk back to stay away from smoke. If smoke is dash blocking he can do a string of his own.

Bullshit man. My Sonya mu chart is far from downplaying. The only mu I was probably wrong about was the kenshi one.

Its only been as of recent that ive been an "up player". You have been a down player as long as youve played mk9

Smoke going 6-4 against Scorpion is a sick joke. That match is ridiculously bad. That's a real 3-7 mu not the BS like Lao 3-7ing Smoke. LBSH still a lot of downplaying in this forum.

lao for sure bops smoke lol, that is a truth. Also, scorpion smoke isn't as bad as some would make it seem. It is hard, but scorpion has what he needs to make it competitive, smoke doesn't blow up scorpion like cage, sonya, and rax do.

Rax could be borderline 8-2 vs scorpion, though. Smoke is at least 7-3, I would say. GGA Slips

smoke I still feel can be 6 4 with scorpion, but 7 3 is very possible. Cyrax for sure 8 2s scorpion, I cant even beat my bros cyrax pretty much lol.

Ok, I need to be sold on this bill of goods that Smoke really has any 3-7 MU's. Here's how I see both Cyrax and Smoke, in a nutshell, in MK9.

1) both have great d4's that lead to a guessing game massively in their favor where guessing wrong could cost you the round; point # 6. (command grab or 1,2 net into round critical damage for Cyrax vs Smoke who can d4 you again until infinity or he gets bored, throws you or b2,3 into round critical damage. There is more I could say on this point but these are the basics.)

2) both have the same speed standing normals used to full combo interrupt pressure from rushdown chars. that lead to # 6 (standing 2,1 into smoke bomb for smoke, 1,2 into net for Cyrax are both 9 frames)

3) both have 6 frame d1's that can cancel into specials for less risky poking out of pressure. (d1, buzzsaw for Cyrax vs d1 smoke-away. Cyrax's can be counter-poked by the highest level competition, Smoke's can NOT)

4) both have decent d3's (smoke's is def. better, its faster (7 frames vs 9 frames) and lowers his hitbox more than Cyrax's but can also be used for poking out of pressure or creating distance vs rushdown.

5) Awesome projectiles that lead to # 6 (net - takes up half the screen and is hard to avoid because of how slow it moves but full combo punishable by anyone when close vs smoke bomb - full screen check anywhere that you're holding block but is only punished by a few characters in the game when blocked up close.)

6) That damage.


Those are the characters basic tools I see. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of the Smoke data, pls.

How are these characters so different that they can have vastly different MU numbers vs Sonya and Kung Lao? I can see Kabal possibly being that bad, because he gives Cyrax a hard time, but Kung Lao and Sonya you have to sell me on.

Oh wait... I forgot: YOU CAN'T ZONE SMOKE. Which is half the reason Cyrax has "issues" with Kabal and Sonya. I used to think Sonya won that MU - she might but, it could also be even. Kabal def. beats Cyrax, but is it really a 3-7? Hard to say, at this point. Kabal hold all the cards, he controls the entire pace, but Cyrax can turn the whole round with one opportunity - but so can Smoke.


I'd love to hear your honest thoughts, everyone. Now the game is "dead" we can talk about MU's and not have our ego's on the line and leave downplaying at the door.

Simply put, at the highest level its a 6-4 in favor of Cyrax.

The match-up is all about who can open each other the best. I don't feel like Smoke can open Cyrax up, while Smoke has to deal with Cyrax, and react with either slower normals, very punishable specials, or rely on anti-airs which Cyrax also has. This would be a 7-3 if Smoke didn't have his damage, so it saves him big time.

*Wait, are we discussing Mortal Kombat again? :)

lol, I agree. It is one of those MU's where I don't see it being as lopsided as a 7-3, but is a for sure 6-4. 16Bit just has a skewed view of the Smoke community and MU discussion. I am sure starting back up this MK discussion has him right back in the saddle.

i'm going with 7 3, you don't even need to main lao to go to work on smoke, smoke has to work way to hard defensively vs lao. Also lao can punish smoke heavily, abuse smoke's hitbox, and just cause havoc for smoke all around. The only thing going great for smoke in that matchup is his solid pokes to get under lao's high hits and his great damage. But overall, that mathchup is rough.

BS I just know how good Smoke is. Smoke badly out footsies Scorpion. I have seen that MU played at a high level many times.
