*clears throat*
Quan Chi is without a doubt the most interesting character design in this game, and his functionality is part of what brings color and uniqueness to this game. A character based on math. It's fascinating. And how about we stop insulting the players that use him? Of course Insuperable deserves respect, but this isn't about him being able to play other characters. Any player who dedicates themselves to Quan Chi HAS to be good. Oh, yeah, the rune trap is so broken. You just have to save meter and touch them. Bullshit. Playing with Quan's borderline awful tools AND managing your meter AND not breaking combos AND having no way out of pressure AND playing a character 100% based on mind games and gimmicks.... Yeah, you can't be a shitty player and do well with that character.
Just the fact that the community is so split on Quan Chi being "broken" is a testament to the fact that it's not as clear of an issue as that. Everyone knows Cyrax's resets are broken. Everyone knows that Jax and Smoke having 100% reset combos is broken, even if the top MK player uses them while complaining about Quan Chi. But people can't agree on the rune trap. That's because it's truly unique. There's something beautiful about it. If any other character had it, we would unite in protesting it. But due to how Quan Chi plays, and the actual nature of the character of Quan Chi, the rune trap makes sense.
When Brady went on KTP with his tier list, he got to Quan Chi, and he let out a sigh, saying: "First of all, Quan Chi players, I see what you mean now. He really does need the rune trap." As time goes on, and players improve, and Quan is understood by all, there will be very few top players that take issue with the rune trap. And those that still do will simply find a way to justify bitching about it while at the same time cheering for it and supporting a Quan Chi player simply because he's on his team and plays well with other characters.
This is also a game, a series rather, that has always had stuff in it that isn't in different fighters. Remember MK1 with Scorpion's spear? That kind of move didn't exist before MK. What about the Ice Clone? Revolutionary game mechanic. Tekken and SF characters can't put a person-sized static projectile on screen that freezes you if you touch it. So I don't wanna hear people saying, "In no other game do you get punished for blocking." There's a lot of shit in MK that is different than other fighters.
Here's hoping that the final match at Evo comes down to an 80% Rune Trap for the win.
