His rune trap is broken, but you can say the same thing about Cyrax's resets, Smoke's resets and Jax's 100% reset in the corner. I don't think the character is necessarily broken.

Nice topic. I do get truly annoyed with all the complaining about the rune trap. As has been stated elsewhere in this thread, Quan needs and deserves this tactic considering the liabilities he is saddled with. And yes, I know what being saddled with liabilities actually means...my mains are Sheeva, Sindel, Quan, and Shang. my back-ups are Baraka and Jade. I manage to make it work with all of these characters...then the hate starts. "Quan's runes are broken". "Sheeva has too much armor". These characters are viewed as lower-mid tier AT BEST. Win with one, however, and you won't hear the end of how OP'd or broken they are. And who are the most vocal members of the choir? Those who see nothing wrong with Cyrax's accursed net/bomb traps, Jax's 100% resets, Smoke's reset shenanigans, IAGB/NCDC abusers, and Cage-philes who live and die by his damned F3. Why should Quan's rune trap be eliminated when other, less handicapped characters have much more effective expolits?
Quan is a great character and a serious threat, albeit one that is tough to master. I would love him, and WIN with him, even without the rune trap. Those who can make the same claim deserve credit, not choruses of complaints that Quan is broken. Eliminate the 100% resets, IAGB, bomb traps, and every other exploit that upper-tier fighters have at their disposal, and THEN we can talk dropping rune trap. Until then, just enjoy the massive helpings of Woolay that Quan has for you.

"You get punished for good defense when playing Quan Chi" eh?

Well, don't you think that, against Quan, "good defense" really isn't good defense?

It all come down to reeds and proper responds. Skarlet will chip you to death. Good defense is not enough here. Same goes for JC, Kabal, and the list dosent end here.

I dunno, theres nothing more satisfying than being beaten to within 10-15% of my health, only to land a triple rune trap and win the game.

The rage quits are endless, I love it.
oh they are, and it's beautiful!!
I believe he CAN be broken. He has the potential to be top tier or bottom tier. He's a wild card IMO. Kinda like Scorp, but potentially better and potentially worse.
agreed. it all comes down to player skill and determination. if you are a true quan chi disciple, you will out you best foot forward and make him shine.

It's kind of strange, but I think if he had a descent wakeup, he would be viable to play at tournaments

I would take the time to pick up the timing for D1 as a AA. D1-Trance not only is a huge plus on your side, but its even more demoralizing to your opponent. When they can't even jump in on you without being put into a trance, the salt levels rise even higher.

But yes, its hard. Practice. Its worth it. It wins you games.

Anti-air is by far my weakest element. I really need to get into the lab and work on them :/

quan chi can not technically be broken, considering he has so few a number of tools. its not so much that his tools arent good, but its really difficult to hit them against high level players. any high level player playing a high tier character shouldnt lose to quan. conclusion, quan=not broken.

That mentality is so wrong it hurts.
So just because he may have trouble getting close to someone means that the rune trap isn't beyond broken? lolfuckno

The full 3-Bar Rune Trap isn't where it's at anymore.
Mixing up string BETWEEN the 212 EX Runes and maximizing damage is where it's at.
There's no one in this game who has to sacrifice more Meter to get his job done than Quan.
(Except Jade.)

Given the rest of his average-to-below-par tools, I think that's fair.
I kind of like mixing up a rune trap off any string into a throw. It's like a 30% mix up every time you touch someone on block.

I'd call him poorly designed, like several other characters in the game. The game itself makes him what he is obviously - and having guaranteed unblockable insane damage is just not how a fighting game should work in my opinion. But criticism aside, it takes a bit of knowledge to be able to handle him, and then he's not all that bad in the end.
Gimmick.

Well when they designed the game, they didn't want to make it so he had a rune trap, just like how cyrax wasn't designed to have resets.
