Everytime I see your posts. The thread isn't pointless. Does the game need them? Yes, but only for marketing. The fatalities are there as a marketing gimmick. That's what they were in the beinning and that's what they are now. But, I would agree with Vulcan, and say that they've taken a wild turn from where they started and are now just sadistic.
The original fatalities in MK were completely in-line with the Kung Fu/Grindhouse feel of the old Kung Fu flicks that inspired Big Trouble. The deaths in those movies are comical and over the top, with bright red, cartoon blood spewing everywhere, which is what MK1,MK2, and MK3 had.
MK9 isn't trying to be comical. It's trying to depict torture and not just violence. The beautiful twist in the digitized MK games is that in spite of them using real actors to portray the characters, the designers also pitted them against obvious claymation figures, and had the blood and fatalities cartoony and related to the same type of violence you'd see in a Looney Tunes cartoon or in a movie, like a Kung fu movie, Temple of Doom, or Raiders. Many kids had already seen faces melt, limbs torn off, and hearts get ripped out. When Baraka was shown, Kids could instantly relate him to T-1000. The old games had pop cultural cues to the violence. The new games don't.
The new games are all about torture, and watching the other character suffer as they die. It's not enough to just kill them in today's games. The swiftness of the old fatalities also added to their humor. Who really wants to see Wile E. Coyote get blown up by one of his ACME devices and then languish on the ground with one leg and a torso, and then get shot in the face, decapitated, and then disembowled? That's Itchy and Scrtachy type violence, which is supposed to be totally sadistic because it's a satire of the old violent cartoons which had more straightforward violence, but were violent nonetheless. Yes, many people can laugh at the violence of the new games, but if you are sick, and enjoy violent torture I think the new games feed that as well, which wasn't really the intent of the old games. I'd say Scorpion's MK2 fatality and Baraka's MK2 fatality were the closest thing to torture in the old games, but they still had legs standing after death and buckets of bright red blood oozing to keep them silly.
I think you're overestimating how much time fatalities take; compared to the other stuff you mentioned, its just an animated sequence, which in the grand scheme of things really aren't that hard.maybe even BETTER without them because then they'd put more time into gameplay, story, netcode, QA and various modes.
No, it wasn't just MK. Doom and Wolfenstein and some other games had people all stirred up; the ratings would have happened anyway.Without the Fatality system, your computer games would not have an age rating system. which is irresponsible. HALF OF ME WANTS THIS THREAD LOCKED BUT WE NEED TO EDUCATE NEW PEOPLE TO THE MK FRANCHISE
Riiight...co-creator and Director of NRS' opinion doesn't matter. Good call.Ed Boon's opinion doesn't matter either.
what sells is what matters not what he thinks. It's scorpion in the cover because he's a fan favorite or because he's ed's favorite. Was kreat-a-fatality taken out because ed or cause of the fans? If ed said no fatalities and the fans said yea whos opinion would overrule who's?Riiight...co-creator and Director of NRS' opinion doesn't matter. Good call.
Ed Boon, because he is the creative director and so gets the final say on what goes in or out.what sells is what matters not what he thinks. It's scorpion in the cover because he's a fan favorite or because he's ed's favorite. Was kreat-a-fatality taken out because ed or cause of the fans? If ed said no fatalities and the fans said yea whos opinion would overrule who's?
I was one of those people who couldn't play the original Wolfenstein because it gave me blackouts however I have a fond memory of playing Doom on pc with a virtual reality headset. You could look around corners. Off topic but kool. No, it wasn't just MK. Doom and Wolfenstein and some other games had people all stirred up; the ratings would have happened anyway.
So if he said no more fatalities we'd all just have to hold that?Ed Boon, because he is the creative director and so gets the final say on what goes in or out.
Being a Director means his opinion holds quite a bit of weight. Is he a dictator? No, he would have to present quite the argument to take fatalities out. Does he overrule a LOT of people? Uhh, yeah. Including fans like me and you.So if he said no more fatalities we'd all just have to hold that?
Where did I say playing MK will turn you into a killer lol. I've been playing these games since MK1 was released on SNES and I was skipping class when I was like 8-11 years old to go play MK2 and UMK3 at the arcades. I turned out ok I think rofl.
I get that violent video games and movies are all about catharsis. I just don't really get turned on by gratuitous gore violence. There was a point in my life where I loved this kind of stuff. But now I think it's more fun and entertaining when it's cheesy gore meant to be taken lightly and with humour. Not when it's realistic, dark/macabre and super serious.
lol you edited this out of your post. Nice try. It's an actual sexual fetish for them and they dream to be able to do it to someone one day... They're sick lol.
Ed Boon answers to WB executives. It's the opinion of WB executives based upon facts of sales figures and MK's impact on cultural society.what sells is what matters not what he thinks. It's scorpion in the cover because he's a fan favorite or because he's ed's favorite. Was kreat-a-fatality taken out because ed or cause of the fans? If ed said no fatalities and the fans said yea whos opinion would overrule who's?
