Does Mortal Kombat need fatalities?

Where did I say playing MK will turn you into a killer lol. I've been playing these games since MK1 was released on SNES and I was skipping class when I was like 8-11 years old to go play MK2 and UMK3 at the arcades. I turned out ok I think rofl.

I get that violent video games and movies are all about catharsis. I just don't really get turned on by gratuitous gore violence. There was a point in my life where I loved this kind of stuff. But now I think it's more fun and entertaining when it's cheesy gore meant to be taken lightly and with humour. Not when it's realistic, dark/macabre and super serious.
I think what you're saying is clear...but you're saying it in the context of talking about a video game that has been purposefully designed to be more dark/macabre. It's like going to a horror flick and saying 'Man, I just don't like being scared out of my wits anymore.' The only response you'll get is 'Great...so why are you here?'.

Kinda like 99% of the responses to this thread.
 
This is like saying, does street fighter need ryu and ken, or does marvel need spiderman. LBSH MKs fatalities are a damn trademark, asking if we need them shouldn't be a question BC they are going to be included anyway.

So? You can be a fan of MK and not like/care about the more gruesome fatalities. I love the characters, the universe and the gameplay of MK 100 times more than the MK9/MKX fatalities and I definitely think MK would still be just as fun -maybe even BETTER without them because then they'd put more time into gameplay, story, netcode, QA and various modes.

Of course that puts me in the minority and yes my opinion doesn't matter because violence/gore sells just like sex so they'll keep doing it. Whatever, I don't care either way.

Without the Fatality system, your computer games would not have an age rating system. which is irresponsible. HALF OF ME WANTS THIS THREAD LOCKED BUT WE NEED TO EDUCATE NEW PEOPLE TO THE MK FRANCHISE

You're making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Also, the "time could be better spent" argument falls on its face because it's completely valid to say fatalities are a core part of a Mortal Kombat game. Ed Boon's opinion matters more here than yours or mine, and what would his answer be if you asked him if fatalities were necessary? But that's not even the crux of why the argument falls flat - "time could be better spent without x" inherently comes from an opinion. Me? I would argue that I don't give one shit about the story mode - if they just cut that out of the game, they could put more time into balancing game mechanics. But that argument holds no water either, and you will never see me making it in any sort of legitimate sense.

No one's questioning whether you're a fan of MK. Why would they? Makes no sense.
 
No, and it's upsetting to know that they are keeping MKvsSF from being made.

Although fatalities used to have a use, making the games relevant when they couldn't stand on gameplay (all of them before 9).

Yes. They look cool and it's insulting to your opponent. Babalities are the best though. I hope they're in mkx. I missed them sooooo much when injustice came out. The level of saaallltt is amazing when you baby someone. It fucks them up mentally so much and alot of the times makes the next few matches free (if they don't rage quit). So awesome.

Because characters are the same as an added superficial gimmick that has no real bearing on the actually gameplay?

Like others have said it's purely a marketing plot designed to generate hype and sales.

*facepalm* what he's trying to say is that characters that are the faces of a franchise like ryu and ken are as recognizable as MK's fatalities because as everyone associates ryu and ken with street fighter, everyone associates mortal kombat with fatalities. A street fighter game without ryu or ken in it would just feel wrong just like an MK game without fatalities would just feel wrong.

You must not understand what I'm saying lol. Ryu and Ken have been in every street fighter like all MKs have fatalities. Your going to expect it to be in whether anyone wants it or not. Its not like you HAVE to do them anyways it gives you the option to do it or not lol.

I think some of them are boring or too long. Like nonsense violence, they try to impress with the gore more than with an original clever idea. For example Cassie just shoot you, I guess the "interesting" part is when she put gum in the wound, but for me it is meh. You know, a fatality doesn't need to be gore to impress people. I remember the SNES MK1 fatalities for SubZero and Raiden, and they were a lot better than the arcade versions, I remember when I saw them and thought "mmm, to much blood, lacks personality"; now if you watch the SNES version, subzero use his power to kill the opponent (contrary to the arcade version), and there is zero blood in it; Raiden turns you into ashes (without blood btw), instead of just blowing your head off as in the arcade version (which is in someway a copy ofJohnny cage fatality).

But as someone said, you just don't do the fatalities and problem solve (there was the no blood code in mk9, maybe it returns). For me the real issue (and this came from arcade MK1) is the extremely overflow of blood, it is just ridiculous for me; I wish they split the no blood code from the no fatality code because I like a lot of fatalities in MK9, and in MKX they look good so far; but the amounts of blood are just too "over the top", MK needs more clever ideas than more gore and blood.

Media in general has become more violent, which is probably why the fatalities have turned out how they have. Yes, if you have some sadistic person who enjoys watching people get decapitated they'll get a kick out of it, just like they'll get a kick out of watching someone get their face sawed off in a horror movie. But for the rest of us, these over the top scenes of violence aren't that scary and or disturbing, because they are so unrealistic. Unless you really think a person can rip another's heart out?

Part of the appeal to casuals is the fatalities. But just because they enjoy them, does NOT mean they are more likely to commit murders themselves.

I can't see this franchise not having fatalities. If you think they're a waste, I feel sorry for you... in some ways that is.

Ryu and ken are not analogous to fatalities, that would be scorpion and subzero. The two faces of the franchise that have been in every game.

And I couldn't care less about fatalities, I know I don't have to do them, and I completely understand the appeal of them to the casual player base, so I am not advocating thier removal, but it's silly to think that fatalities add anything to the game play, the thing that actually matters in a fighting game.

Simple, with some silliness mixed in.
no no no... no flying to the sky, no big lightnings, no; make it look simple but at the same time awesome, without "overthetopness". That is what is needed, we need back those fantastic ideas, like MK1 scorpion fatality, you don't get impress because you watch your opponent burning to death, suffering, yelling or anything like that; you get impress because first, you discover scorpion isn't human; second, he can throw fire from his skull; and third, the fire is so powerfull that there is just bones left after he killed you (no blood in all that btw). This is what needs to be brought back, no pointless nonsense overthetop gore.

Well fine replace them with supra and ultras if it makes you feel any better, point is if something is recurring in a game and has been in all of them, you expect it to be in the next version or debut of the series.

I've been playing MK since MK1. I play at the competitive level (not that I think anyone on this site needs to state this, but whatever), and I'm a huge fan of fatalities. I don't do them 99.99% of the time, but I like knowing that they're there. You know what? Yeah, they get old quick, but the first (few) time/s you see fatalities in a new MK game, for myself, and I'm guessing a lot of others out there, it's cool as shit. Style and aspects of style are important to basic franchise maintenance because, at the end of the day, if we wanted to strip style and maintain ultimate balance we'd go play checkers or something.
