Does Mortal Kombat need fatalities?

I'm sure there could be an MK, MK x SF or MK x KI with babalities, friendships and other kinds of censored/rated E finishers but zero gore and it would still sell pretty well and be a great fighting game. It just probably wouldn't sell as much... but you never know.

They could also replace gore with sex/fan service and it would sell around the same copies lol. It would just appeal to a different perverted audience..
The fabled Nude Ality is never going to happen. Mileena's third costume is probably closest to it.

BRUTALITY

I only liked fatalities when they were hilarious and overtop like in UMK3. You also had babalities and friendships so they were just a fun way to rub it in your opponent's face.

Now they're becoming way too graphic and almost like porn so I find them pretty disgusting and pointless.
This is the only right answer. Lets set something straight. The fatalities back in the day were HILARIOUS. They were concise and ridiculously over the top. You had 30 torsos per fatality. The fatalities were never disgustingly gory like a horror film. You didnt feel the pain and wince with them. You entered a snap code in a fraction of a second to dominate your friends and send 3 spinal collumns flying.

The major differences in fatalities today:

1. Execution
The window of execution is far too lenient, there is no skill required for a fatality, its more a reward for winning the match instead of being a reward in itself for simply pulling it off. It is no longer rewarding to perform a fatality because there is no barrier. Its free.

2. Visual appearance of fatalities has changed. Perhaps due to hardware limitations of the 90s the fatalities ended up appearing the way they did - nondescript limbs exploding in all directions in a ridiculous and satisfying explosion of blood. That NEVER happens anymore, instead we have strangely sadistic and horrificly painful and graphic fatalities which go directly against the slapstick kneejerk of the olden days.

3. The fatalities are far too cinematic. Fatalities in old MK were complete in no more than 2 seconds. It was a big "Fuck you I won by the way youre dead again." Due to the cinematic or theatrical nature of the new methodical boring fatalities, it no longer salts the wound for just the opponent, but everyone that has to sit through the unexciting uninteractive scripted animation thats about to happen for the next 20 seconds. Its B O R I N G

Sounds like some people just want the game to say Fight! no intros, no ending scene, nothing but fight!

It's the little things that matter in a game. we don't need customized dialog between fighters before every match. But people seem to be going apeshit about that.

Yes this is exactly what I want. But I also play virtua fighter which does exactly that and no one but me and a very select few play the game on America. I'd rather have a game add silly little meaningless gimmicks like fatalities in order to broaden the fan base and give me more people to play against.

I don't get how you people think fatalities "get old".

They're like extensions of the characters to me.

Raiden exploding someone's head with electricity is just a part of the character, as much as his big dumb hat and stupid battle-cries.
In a weird way you can tell a lot about a person's personality just by watching how they kill someone.

What?! (Unless you've been watching some seriously, seriously messed up porn...)

It's not what I look for in this franchise, therefore I couldn't care less.

They're fun sometimes.

However they do bring the strangest crowd....

xenogorgeous

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
wow .... there is no discussion here .... fatalities are MK trademark since day one and will always be part of the franchise .... in fact, the right question is : can you even imagine just for a second a MK game without fatalities ?

Fatalities are a must, but they need to either add more per character or bring back not only babalities, but the other silly ones; Animalities, brutalities, friendships etc. Seeing the same 2 murders after every game can get old real quick. We need more ways to throw salt on the wound again.
