166 Rapid-Fire Questions With Ed Boon

Raider

Warrior
  • Game will have 25 characters at launch, "thirty-something" to finish.
  • Liu Kang is the closest thing to a main character in the game.
  • Mars can be in Earthrealm, in-fact you can leave our solar system and still be in Earthrealm.
  • No quick-time-events in the story mode.
  • There are multiple story endings.
  • No new realms will be introduced.
  • A tournament will not happen in the story mode.
  • The cutscenes are probably about 2h 30m in total, around the same time as MKX "but maybe a little longer"
  • They always knew the game was going to be called Mortal Kombat 11, there wasn't really a big discussion on what the game was going to be called.
  • Kronika was originally going to be male and have a name similar to "Kronika", but "not too long ago" they decided to make the character female. They made the switch just because they thought it would be cooler.
  • Kronika is not an Elder God, she is "higher than an Elder God"
  • Ed had a meeting about a Mortal Kombat movie about 5 months ago, and a script exists.
  • No Factions or Clan system in the game.
  • Not planning on bringing back 3D fighting anytime in the near future.
  • No lootboxes in the game.
  • No cross-play at launch, but they aren't against the idea.
  • Ed has had a meeting about a potential Marvel fighting game but doesn't want to share any details other than that.
Thanks for the summary. Edited the OP.

Mars can be in Earthrealm, in-fact you can leave our solar system and still be in Earthrealm.
I am so glad we finally got some confirmation of this. I always wondered if Earthrealm only meant Earth itself of if it was just a broad term for the dimension in which Earth resides.

I also wondered what this meant for places like Outworld, is it in it's own dimension or just some planet far away? It has a sun and a moon so it must be in a solar system, now I can finally rest easy knowing its just its own planet in some other dimension lol

You guys talk yourselves in circles, throw out weird interpretations of what they say, and then say NRS is having a bad week. There's 25 characters at launch. One of those 25 is a pre-order bonus. It's very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, vey simple.

So Boom should rewatch this and think again where the name BiHan comes from

Bi-Han is mentioned in Sub-Zero's 2011 vignette

That isn't what the average consumer would take away. If they were told the game has 25 base roster characters, they'd believe that's just what you'd get for buying the game and would believe Pre-Ordering would give you an extra character in Shao Kahn. That's why people are irate about the situation, they should be much clearer about things.

I feel like i'm in the twilight zone reading this stuff.

Can we drop these semantics already? Shao Kahn is part of the base 25. He's day 1 content and is clearly already in the game.
I'm sorry if trying to be clear and transparent bothers you. Honestly I don't know why they're so evasive about this. It makes me think they're up to something.

That feeling when Ed has been trolling for a good portion of the interview
Another reason why we had to doubt everything they told us about the game. Boon has made a name for himself as a "troll" (as people like to call him), so how can I trust anything he says about characters, features, roster size, variations, etc if I can't tell when he is trolling and when he is telling the truth.

“Not planning on bringing back 3D fighting anytime soon”

Thank god, lol. Not that I was worried, considering how successful the modern 2.5D NRS games have been. But the reassurance is nice.

Go over there!
still doesn't connect with the other info about it being around 8 hours. My point is that I knew it was something way out of the ordinary when it comes to NRS games, and I was right.

you guys know that even if you put the fights (which are pretty quick) and alternative endings in a video it won't be longer than 4 hours.

that's why I was skeptical when the 8 hours info came to us.

I used bold because I was excited that I was right skldçslçds that's all
My wife and I just went back through the MK9 and MKX story modes last weekend to refresh our memories on the story line. MKX took ~6hrs to complete. This includes failing at some matches and having to replay them. If you win every match on the first attempt then you're going to get through it faster.

So if MK11 has the same cutscene length as MKX and the same number of matches, 8hrs sounds about right for the most common player, which will be a casual with some basic fighting game skills who needs multiple attempts to get through most fights.

Also, MK11 may feature more playable characters and matches in the story mode, which would a) add length to the campaign, and b) be awesome since soooo many characters in MKX weren't played (e.g. Erron Black, Liu Kang, etc.). I for one would love a couple of chapters where we play villains - how awesome would a Noob Saibot chapter be? :D

I know this is Ed Boon we are talking about and things can change so quickly in this industry but DC vs MARVEL FOR INJUSTICE 3 KONFIRMED!!!!!

I'm going with: he's unlockable in the Krypt.
The constant back and forth I see from people always debating on whether the day 1 character counts or not is what bothers me. They're a character, they're in the game, they're day 1, they're part of the day 1 roster count. Being a preorder unlock does not change that.

I do wonder if "higher" means more powerful than the Elder Gods or merely a different plane of existence? hmmm

Guess the story will explain it because they seem insanely powerful, nigh omnipotent lol so curious what can she do besides mess with time. Would that mean Kronika is fully omnipotent? hmm I hope they explain where she's from, what she is exactly.

He couldn't even name Neatherrealm as one of the realms lol. It's in the freaking studio name lol.
Dude it was Outworld he forgot. He said every realm that ends with "realm" and Edenia. Literally the 3rd post in this thread
No wonder you are having so much trouble interpreting and reading into the game's marketing.
