I think that's a good conclusion. I def. would prefer a substitute to Doomsday and Ares, but I can see this as the outcome.

I posted a few days back an article from a magazine with one of the devs talking about making lesser known characters like Ares, Black Adam, Aquaman, Doomsday and Sinestro look cool enough to make em household names.

If this is the case (Bane vs. Batman) then why is Joker, Quinn and Catwoman here? Doomsday may not even be playable so "recreating" that is a stretch. WW most "popular" villain is probably Cheetah or Circe but we got Ares. Deathstroke is not a true Green Arrow villain so GA doesn't have his "most popular" adversary. If you do wanna count Deathstroke for GA then the Titans/Cyborg/Nightwing doesn't have a popular foe. Sure the roster isn't all out yet but that logic doesn't fly.

Sinestro Surprised Me!!! I really didn't think he'd make the cut, seeing yellow Hal. Maybe we'll see green Sinestro. Will Yellow Hal be a Sinestro alt, as Jet's aren't as fearful as claws and spider limbs growing out of people's bodies). It would make more sense that way.

Here's I speculate the remaining 5 to be, considering the count is 24 (might be more)
1. Robin (b/c of the art book in the European Special Edition)
2. Martian Manhunter (b/c of the art book in the European Special Edition)
3. Doomsday (Arcade Stick and Footage)
4. Black Adam (Aquaman trailer / and some magazine spotted him in story mode)
5. Raven (magazine spotted model in story mode)

Alt's would be
1. Captain Cold (cinematic where flash is covered with ice)
2. Ocean Master (Aquaman trailer but would prefer Black Mantra)
3. Darkseid (only person in MK v DC to not make the cut so far)
4. Ares (magazine spotted model in story mode)

This is just my speculation. It's not my wishlist as I would prefer Zatanna, Dr Fate, The Spectre, Blue Beetle, Sportsmaster, Chesire, Circe, Canary, and Starfire over Doomsday and Robin. I just want a diverse set of fighters. I'll accept Swampthing (although I don't care for him) for this reason, and as much as I love the Red Hood he doesn't offer much in the diversity department.

Cheshire and Sportsmaster would make for some interesting characters. Assassins employed by Deathstroke as back up. That'd be their only way of getting in. If Deathstroke brings them along.

Batman has a TON of favorite matchups. Batman vs Bane had to be in for movie fans. Batman vs Joker had to be in for comic fans. Batman vs Grundy and Catwoman had to be in for fans of the Arkham Games since Grundy was arguably the biggest fight and since Catwoman was playable in the last one.

Deathstroke vs Green Arrow is hot shit on the new Arrow TV show and its more known than anything else he's fought. Plus for all the Teen Titans fans they wanted to draw in they only had one big villain that all fans of the show AND comic book would want and thats Deathstroke because of "Slade" fans and deathstroke being a constant presence in Titans lore in comics.

And honestly with Wonder Woman you just go with whatever is the most stylish since on the Justice League show she had all of one major ordeal of just her own villains and the Circe episode most remember is one where Batman and Zatanna fought her because Wonder Woman was turned into a pig :/ . Have her fight Ares? Sounds more appealing than Circe who did a musical number of "lulu's back in town" as her villain plot on that show. Wonder Woman never left comics so they'll try to appeal to appeal to not only them but also her cartoon show fans. Circe would only grab one of those audiences after she did that cornball stories, but Ares was portrayed as a Badass on JLU and would appeal to both.

Yeeeeaaaahhhh, Batman is not the only one with multiple favorite matches. Of course I'm gonna use Supes as my example: Zod for the movie, Lex and Brainic from comics, Doomsday from recognition. Also, GRUNDY IS NOT A BATMAN VILLAIN.

Sure, doesn't make him an Arrow villain. Smallville got Darkseid/Granny Goodness but they're general villains, not Superman. Smallville got Amanda Waller, again, not Superman. Several guest heroes, several guest villains.

"Most stylish" is not "most popular", Circe is more popular than Ares as a WW villain and so is Cheetah, regardless of how they were portrayed in some animated series. If that's the case why not say all of Batman is a joke because of the 60s TV show/movie?

Sorry about being nitpicky, but this one bugs me. Grundy isn't a Batman villain, he is primarily a green lantern villain (Alan Scott specifically), and afterwards a villain for DC heroes in general. Case in point in the new 52 he is on Earth 2 specifically because Alan Scott is,instead of the universe where Batman is alive.

Alan Scott aint in the game. Casual gamers are going to be the big buyers they need for this game. Grundy was in Arkham and is most recently KNOWN for Arkham. My statement stands.

Bu-bu-bu-bu-bu Grundy was ORIGINALLY not a Batman villain. He was a Golden Age Green Lantern Villain!

Doesn't matter. Golden agers aint exactly known for buying games and Alan Scott AINT the lantern in this game. Hal Jordan is and his main villain SINESTRO is in as his big matchup.

One of the BIGGEST game hits out there with folks hardcore and casual was Arkham City so what Grundy was originally DOESN"T MEAN SHIT. Grundy is in just like Catwoman to appeal to Arkham City fans. Folks who bought and played Arkham City casually will see Grundy and Catwoman in the game and Arkham City skins are in this game. You cannot tell me Grundy isn't in largely due to Arkham City crowds needing to have specific bait dangled in front of them. That Arkham City game sold a TON and if you could tap into those numbers by putting the potential for its most celebrated fight into the game then you would do it or you would be stupid. They loved the Solomon Grundy fight and THIS is the most memorable matchup for that crowd. Solomon Grundy is in for Arkham City crowd draws so they can relive that fight.

I say again. My reasoning holds up and you can hold dat.

Brute force isn't that appealing to me. I was underwhelmed by GL but I'm hoping they saved their good ideas for Sinestro. Never thought he'd be in the game due to the similarities that would exist between the two but I guess NRS has something in mind for Sinestro. Or they just want to sell more copies and threw in a notable villain.
