As a Melee player who migrated to MK on MK9's release (I was riding the hype train because UMK3 is one of my favorite games of all time), the lack of respect for SSBM among some players in the MK community astounds me, and I feel like it just boils down to ignorance. Melee has not only been at EVO, but was an MLG staple for years when fighting games were considered all but dead. Players like KillaOR were featured on MTV's "true life: I'm a professional gamer", and Ken put himself through college based on the massive income he made at the various high level melee tournaments because the game is THAT GOD DAMN BIG (he was later cast on "Survivor" due to his fame in the community). Smashboards.com is one of the largest and comprehensive communities for any game, period, and has in-depth guides that put most others to shame. They did this alone, before SF4 or MK9 or anything else that "resurrected the fighting game genre" and made communities like this one possible.
Yet people on this site, and others, question the credentials of the Melee community. 8 years after game release the "Revival of Melee" tournaments began and have consistently had around 150 players competing each year since (136, 172, 168, 120). Hundreds of other tournaments have large turnouts as well all over the world. I'd love to (and I'm being serious here, I really would) see other games today create this kind of legacy.
Or is it maybe that the game plays too differently? The buttons seem too simplistic? Anyone who's played both games can tell you that the tech skill and reads required to play SSBM put other fighters to shame. Someone mentioned it before: the tech skill required to play ANY character in melee at a competitive level makes Kabal look like a joke. I don't think that tech skill makes a better game, but melee has a depth to it unrivaled by pretty much anything I can think of.
I love both games and I know that they will both be hype at EVO. Don't turn this community into one of prejudice against other fighting games. Saying "Melee isn't a fighting game because you have to turn items off and there is no 100-0 health bar" is comparable to saying "Mortal Kombat isn't a fighting game because you have a block button and stages matter".
