Theres so many gaps in his pressure, you have answers for most of his strings, its just the actual physical pressure and stress that your under when you fight a bastard of a JC that means you can just get shut down totally. Keep calm, stay safe, and dont throw smokebombs within half a screen of him. Use your smoke drifts to leave you safe as possible, after pressure strings say you get a jip (somehow) or a d4, you can get a string, now you hitconfirm into a combo, and on block you either go for your frame trapping d1 into more pokes, or you GTFO cancel into backsmoke and get out of there.

Try your best to avoid the corner, however a well placed EX Shake is more of a crutch than anything in this match because JC will be poking you in pressure, stuffing out your shakes, so if you have no other options you can try it, but its hard to judge.

Occasionally Smokes regular teleport gets stopped at its first hit instead of continuing on to the second or in the case of the EX teleport the third. How is this happening? It would be good to know considering he dosen't bounce off of a blocked opponent this way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your opponent is likely crouching while not blocking. This will cause your TP to whiff.

When I end a combo in 21 xx smoke towards, what's the best way to deal with somebody who likes to techroll? Obviously block 'n punish wakeups, but is there anything else I can do?

Also.... standing 2 disadvantage frames on block? Anyone?

Was just messing around in training mode with Smoke as the dummy and having the wake up attack option set to on. Anyway, I noticed that sometimes this would happen when he would do a wakeup teleport. It happens on the second try of the video and the last one.

instead of appearing where the smoke comes to rest, he reanimates on the other side of the stage. Is there a reason why this happens or is it just some weird glitch?

Its probably one of those redirect glitches...how it happens with Smoke's Phase teleports is beyond me.

well, I'm not really sure why it happens, I do know that this is known to happen when smoke drift becomes active when the opponent is directly over top of Smoke.

EDIT: Moved to the Ask Smoke thread

WITHOUT RESET where do my fellow Smoke players put Smoke in tier list? I still think he is top 8 with all of his great tools. I ask this because ive gotten good with the resets but im going to stop using them just because its becoming a bad habbit and can do more bad than good SOMETIMES.

I do corner resets only since I have the best consistency there. Smoke's not as broken as everyone thinks; he doesn't have "hard" tools like everyone else has. Alot of stuff that Smoke does relies upon tricking/confusing the enemy more than it does the character actually being good/having crazy mixups. He's still got alot going for him though. 5th seems fair.

Honestly I don't think the reset gives him a bigger advantage in any match-up that he has so if I was basing it off match-up's I don't think it knocks him down any on the tier list. I think he is probably around the back end of the top 5 or just outside of it.

EX Ovi should launch
If smoke inputs Smoke Towards or Away as you cross him up, it will autocorrect and still go AWAY or TOWARDS depending on what input you used. the animation itself will not auto correct in time. Its tricky to see why it happens but ive pretty much come to the conclusion that the animation moves before the character does, so its hard to judge.

Smoke is top 5 (or BARELY outside) without resets, top 3 with them.
With resets the tier list doesnt really apply, i play awfully in some matches and i do NOT deserve to win, but the comeback factor that having 2 meters to clutch with can beat any character, top or bottom tier.

Absolutely Smoke is either top 5 or right outside around the A+ area. I agree he relies on tricks and confusion but he does have some pretty godlike tools. There is literally like 6 things you cant do against Smoke you will pay badly for it. However i think the complaining about him is BS because Smoke is not OP. Very very good but not OP. The reset puts him up there on tier list but like i said i stopped using it as Smoke is good without it.

Hi !

I'm a new MK9 player so don't worry if my questions seem noobish.
I've decided to main smoke, and all the tricks and advices all of you have already shared on this forum are very precious to me. So many thank to all of you, guys ! :)

- First of all, in every fight game I play, I like to study and analyse frame datas. I've read the "Smoke Frame Data" thread, but many datas are missing (advantage on hit/block/miss, damages on block, number of armored/invulnerability frames, etc.)
Where can I find a more complete data sheet ?

- I've found many examples of combos but while some of them don't work anymore after the last patch, some other are very hard to perform and seem unusable in a real fight.
What correct damage percentage can we expect from a standard combo ? (from midscreen/in a corner, with/without an EX Smoke Bomb)
When a basic Smoke Cloud hits as a starter, what is the best way to continue the string ?
What is the best string to push an ennemy the farthest toward a corner ?
On the opposite, when in a corner, what is the best way to swap the places ?

- I've some problem with some moves :
3,d1,2, ijp (far from a corner : whiff very often)
d1, d1, Smoke Cloud (d1, Smoke Cloud works well for me, but not with another d1 : I always miss to cancel the second d1)
f4, Smoke Bomb (far from a corner : the Smoke Bomb hits the ground one meter before the ennemy and misses him)
Do you have some tips ? Or is it normal we can't rely on these moves ?

- I think our X-ray is a bit useless (far less usefull than a breaker, a Smoke Bomb or a Vibration). Do you have some trick to optimise it ?

- I read you seem to generally poke far more with d1 than d3.
d3 is only one frame slower than d1, is not blocked by a standing blocking opponent and has a better reach. So why using d1 instead of d3 ?

That's a lot of questions my man. But surprisingly they are all really, really good ones. I'll enjoy answering these.

Smoke does not have current and perfect frame data. We are waiting for Somberness to (eventually) get to Smoke and find all this out for us. What we have isn't incorrect (I don't believe) but everything could be newer and confirmed.

Smoke gets high 30s/low 40s from his biggest midscreen combos, and 40-45% from his wall combos.

midscreen do these:

jip > 3d12 > njp > 32 > 4 xx bomb > 3d12 > 21 xx smoke towards. the njp makes timing really tight, I usually skip it for consistency's sake.

jip > 3d12 > njp > b23 xx bomb > 3d12 > jk xx airthrow. The KT Smith Special. I don't use this one, i prefer the above combo.

corner:

jip > 214 xx bomb > 32 > 32 > 32 > 214 xx invis OR smoke towards

jip > 3d12 > njp > 32 > 32 > 32 > 21 xx bomb > backdash f4 xx invis/EX bomb/smoke towards OR 214 xx invis/smoke towards.

b23 xx telepunch > d1 xx bomb > 32 > 214 xx ender of choice

I'd list more but I'm lazy.. smoke's juggles are really easy to figure out, as you do these you'll probably figure the rest of yourself. if not just ask again and i'll type more out :D

3d12 > njp is difficult. How I do it is after inputting 3d12 I hold up. then as soon as I jump I hit 1 and then slide my finger across the controller to 2 so I am hitting both buttons with a very small gap inbetween each. I get the njp with about 80 percent consistency midscreen and 100% consistency in the corner using this method. I almost never njp midscreen so this works for me haha. Some of us call this "piano"-ing.

d1 ff d1b2. All I can really say about that; go into practice mode and set a dummy to jump and just practice. It's gotta be muscle memory.

f4 xx EX bomb: yeah, that's a known problem. Usually when that happens you are hitting them with the f4 too early, try holding off for a few more frames and you should hopefully connect. Smoke's reset ain't easy.

I use smoke's x-ray as an "F-U" to my opponents that have and spam their armor moves on me. Xray is smoke's only armor and I find it hilarious to blow people up with it. Smoke needs a buff on it though, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to telepunch in for Oki after a fucking x-ray. Seriously NRS, i just blew all of my meter to do less than what sonya can do with 1. Throw me a bone here.

Choosing your poke is situational. In a frame war you obviously want d1. I use d3 a heck of a lot though. Also d1 is amazing if you're in a situation where the enemy *could* go airborne. If you 3d12 > d1 and that's it, alot of times people will try to jump out and get blown up. But if you just blindly commit to 3d12 > d1 > d1 xx bomb you have the OPPORTUNITY to combo somebody for trying to jump out. It's generally not a good practice though. Like cookies, this tactic is a sometimes food.

Hopefully this answers everything and my resposne was legible. I'm so tired.

Hey KT Smith what kind of fight stick do you use? screwing up commands and missing d1 and standing 2 anti airs have cost me my last few matches and i think i want to convert to a fight stick.

I actually use a PS2 pad because I'm a fighting game poser. I've been considering a hit box, though. I keep going back and forth between wanting one and not wanting one.

Ever since that thread where we were talking about using x-ray to beat wake ups I've been doing that more and am getting burned on it more often than not. Smoke's x-ray hit box is so shitty. I wish it were like Scorpion's and take up the whole goddamn screen.

I use the x-ray only for unbreakable damage in combos or for trollin'

KT and Frothy, you cant seriously be telling me that you use 3 meters to gain an armoured dash/starter.

Jokes or not, and unbreakable or not, this is not worth 3 meters. Anyone coming to this thread doesnt deserve to be told anything about the xray.

He's still Top 5. Online, I have pretty **** connection, so I can't even land the resets consistently (offline, I'd abuse the hell out of them). I have my own combo substitutes for when or if the resets are ever removed. He's just a really good character, and has other actual resets (not broken, guaranteed ones). With resets, he's Top 3...and partially broken imo.

- I think our X-ray is a bit useless (far less usefull than a breaker, a Smoke Bomb or a Vibration). Do you have some trick to optimise it ?
You can use his X-Ray as anti-air if your opponent jumps in at you. It also has armor, so you can counter an attack with it, such as Kenshi's telekinetic slash or many wakeup attacks. Lastly, it's unbreakable, making it a great way to finish off your opponent. Aside from that, yeah, it's best to conserve your meter.

- I read you seem to generally poke far more with d1 than d3.
d3 is only one frame slower than d1, is not blocked by a standing blocking opponent and has a better reach. So why using d1 instead of d3 ?
D1's speed allows you to jail your opponent in a sense. If you do it fast enough, and they jump out, they get anti-aired. D1 is like Smoke's best pressure game because if they realize they can't jump out, they'll have to poke you out of it. If you D1~Smoke Bomb beforehand, you can counter footsy them. If they stand block like statues, you can grab them or do a 3 D1 2 string. After 3 D1 2, if you quickly use D1, it traps (or anti-airs) them unless they poke you out or use an armored move first.

smokey yumadtho? Just because something is situational and risky doesn't mean it shouldnt be shared at all. Check the combo thread for my 50%+ meterless corner juggle with smoke, lol. I've blown up people by abusing my armor more often than I've gotten blown up for it. How broken would smoke be if he had armor on EX bomb? LMAO

EX Bomb armour would be similar to EX Spear, which i could see being very good haha.

I dont see your 50% meterless corner juggle, and i dont remember seeing it either so if you can link me that would be cool.

Situational gimmicks are risky. There is no way in hell i can justify using 3 of my bars to do something when 1 meter, ex shake, ex drift, and using my head would achieve the same/better results, i like that you use all smokes tools, but theres a point where you have to draw the line :p, especially when advising new players on whats good and bad with smoke.

I'll just type it out, too lazy to search.

YOU MUST BE EXACTLY 3 DASHES AWAY FROM THE CORNER

jip 3d12 > quarter dash xx uppercut > 32 > 32 > 32 > 21 xx bomb > 214 xx ender. Or you can backdash > f4 > reset.

This combo is hilariously useless.
