I would have never guessed.

I'm shocked, I tell you. SHOCKED.

He is literally a professional animator.

Ed Boon, on the other hand, is not a professional animator.
Are you seriously saying that Ed Boon, a game director, who clearly have spent his entire career with all parts of gaming, including animations, doesn't understand how animations work? If you're a game director you must have peak knowledge in all areas of gaming. That's how the gaming industry works.

And yet this guy is NOT a professional animator and he also doesn't even understand basic terms in gaming. He actually thinks that Kombat League, a Ranked mode system, is a battle pass just because it has unlockables tied to it on a timer. I know that this is what he thinks, because he told this to me directly.

Your hatred biasness is objectively next level. And grifters like him taking advantage of you.

Yes.

If you're a game director you must have peak knowledge in all areas of gaming.
This is wildly wrong.

That's how the gaming industry works.
Don't tell me how the game industry works. I went to college for game coding & design and I worked in the industry for years for major console gaming. Game directors absolutely do not need to know how animations work just like they don't need to know how to compose music for the game. That is why they have an animation department and an animation lead that they trust do handle that. This is basic shit. This is like saying an operations supervisor has to know how every team under him does all their work and how to do it. Nothing could be further from the truth. That is what team leads are for. They are the specialists for that team. That is quite literally why they exist. A CEO at Widgets Inc does not need to know how to do every job under him.

Everything else you said is just more rambling nonsense cope.

The same players that bitched and complained about MK9 are bitching and complaining about MK1…. Why am I not surprised?
If you hate this game this much go play something else and let us enjoy our game.
But...a lot of these people (myself included) liked MK9...

Hell the casuals I know enjoyed MK9-11...but dislike MK1. So...what's your point exactly?

Anyway, I will keep holding a gun to your head to make sure you have to sit in front of your screen and keep reading this thread and seething instead of playing the game and enjoying it.

You are not allowed to leave. You are here forever. Do not even think about touching a controller.

I don't see how Conan looks stiff at all. I just think people are biased cause its an easy meme to dunk on NRS character designs. Easy memes = easy shitposts = More likes and engagement. His animations are fine.
No Conan does look stiff, the rest of the dlc is fire though.

Tom Brady and everyone else that dislike MK1 also complained about MK9 all the time.
I liked MK11 for the first 6months then I grew tired of getting full combo punished for trying to combo punish someone lol.

Dude, really, stop lying. A quick Google search will lead you to his work, it's easy. He is a professional animator. But you probably can't even do that right.

Dude MK9 also had 9-1 match ups, P1 advantage, input bug, Metter drain glitch, and terrible online. I mean,it's one of my favorite vodeogames of all time, but there was a lot to complain about.

Ah okay I was unclear on that. That makes sense. My bad.

And yeah I had a pretty similar arc with MK11 as you did. None of the characters really clicked with me either other than Kano who was just kinda...there. Like he was inoffensive but a bit bland but the only character I enjoyed to any degree. The break away stuff made me do the same walk away. Absolutely wild that that existed.

Definitely got my money's worth from the game though because my wife put in like 1000 hours because of the AI battle option so silver lining I suppose.

I liked kabal, subzero and scorpion in MK11 I just hated the game mechanics.

I did a google search and he's got nothing. All his got is his channel. So just like I gave you the link for Ed Boon's explanation on animations, I guess you can find that guy's animation work also, if it's really that easy. Come on, show it to me.

There are multiple videos on the internet documenting Ed Boon's work with the motion capture actors for the classic MK games so they can later translate them to animations. Game directors do need to know everything in gaming at least high enough level to be director's. That's also one of the reasons why Capcom Fighting Evolution was a terrible game, because Capcom chose Ono of all people to be the director of that game while at the time he only had experience in music and sound design of gaming but nothing else. Then he directed Street Fighter 4 and because he then got so much more experience in everything else, that's how SF4 became a much better game and a success. Yes he directed SFXT and SF5 also, both of which were flops, but he couldn't have gotten to direct these games without his success with SF4, and he had to get so much more experience to be the director of that game also.

Unlike you and that zero guy above, I'm not gonna call you a liar regarding your gaming classes, at least not on the spot, because unlike you, I'm actually a professional. But at the very least, it's very clear that you're biased against MK and everything they do.

Also speaking of, I find it really funny that you said that everything I said after the animations thing is just nonsense (where I clearly exposing that grifter's stupidity, yeah, how convenient of you skipping that part) but yet you still quoted parts of that comment and only listed them under your response to Tricky Bird, and that is AFTER you and others are confusing script writing for stories/movies and internet comment writing/understanding just to get a gotcha on me. So kudos to you, you exposed yourself, I guess.

And speaking of Tricky, yes, a lot of the people who complained about MK9 back then have also complained about MKX, MK11 and now MK1. Yes some people do genuinely do prefer whatever game is the current game, but more often then not they don't come in enough numbers to defend the game, either because they don't care what's going on with the games on the internet in terms of discourse or they are simply scared of rabid dogs like you want to validate their hatred so bad and/or just wanna suck up to the "cooler guys" on the internet who are way too vocal for their own good.

No game is perfect, but your biasness against MK1 is sickening, and it needs to stop. If you hate MK1 so much, maybe you shouldn't even be on an MK fan site like TYM. Or I'm sorry, TYT.:DOGE

I laughed really hard at the below

This is a particularly funny tautology of "Game directors need to know enough to be game directors". LMFAO

So anyway we're going to go with what's humorous to me...

So TLDR, you can't debunk anything I've said so you just yelling at clouds.

I guess that maybe you are indeed a liar when it comes to taking game coding and design classes.

Oh and just so you know, since you like to dunk on my love for Pokemon as if it's yet another gotcha, recent Pokemon games actually improved their stories significantly, both Pokemon Legends Arceus and Pokemon Scarett/Violet got incredible stories that actually make you getting attached to the characters and with multiple emotional moments. They are on the verge to be as good as Mortal Kombat stories, which makes it even sadder that SF6 and Tekken 8 are still so behind with their writing and that is pathetic.

Wait, really? I mean, I was joking when I said you wouldn't be able to find it. You really couldn't? That's hilarious.

What makes MK1 not perfect. I'm curious.
And just like I did find Ed Boon's explanation on animations, if that grifter had any actual animation work it would've so easy to find. I asked you to find it, and you don't bother. Color me shocked.

Hey everyone, we got TWO liars here. Zero Sebaz and Yagami Fire!

Oh and Mortal Kombat 1 is PHENOMENAL! Not perfect, but PHENOMENAL!

I actually wanted to comment on this to reveal how wrong TomChan is and because it's just good info to put out there I think.

That's also one of the reasons why Capcom Fighting Evolution was a terrible game, because Capcom chose Ono of all people to be the director of that game while at the time he only had experience in music and sound design of gaming but nothing else
CFE was a terrible game because it was repurposed work from Capcom Fighting All-Stars which was a far more ambitious 3d game that ended up being totally scrapped. Furthermore, Ono was a producer on the game and he came in halfway through the game to help produce it to replace a different producer who left. There were also three other producers on the game.

The notion that Ono magically gained full knowledge of how to do animations, coding and everything else about video games based on coming in HALFWAY through CFE and then using that knowledge for SF4 to magically make it good is absurd on the face of it. That is not what a Producer does.

In fact, this is a wildly stupid claim.

As Producer, Ono would be responsible for business-side stuff. Things like schedule and deadlines, budgetary concerns and working directly with the publisher themselves (whether that be in-house or external). This is the guy handling making sure stuff is happening on time and that the various teams are getting the resources they need (or keeping them from wasting this resources...) while also hearing from the publisher and other outside concerns about how things are going, what their needs are, what changes may be coming up in expectations, etc etc. This job typically has...not a lot to do with the whats & whys of the final product as far as a nuts & bolts thing. Producers are very often non-technical people that are very good at managing the business side of things. Contracts licensing, etc all fall in their wheelhouse. They're the go-between for the execs detached from the game and the entity/team making the game. They do not need to know how the sausage is made and very often have no clue whatsoever but that doesn't matter because it's irrelevant to them. They have specialists for that.

So yeah, Ono having to know how to do tweens for animation? Yeah not a thing. Never has been for a producer in video games, never will be.

Meanwhile, someone like Ed Boon is a CCO & Team Lead. This is a person directly responsible for how the thing IS. They are much like the director on a film like how the producer for the game would be a producer on a film. Chief Creative Officer has that word in the title for a reason, after all. Now, much like a film director, they do not need to know how everything is done but will often come from a background that includes some element of making thing. Lots of directors were cinematographers or what have you for film while a lot of Team Leads can come from backgrounds like being programmers (aka guys that aren't in charge of animation).

My Team Lead (who was AWESOME btw) was a guy that was previously a Music Lead. He did not magically know everything about programming. He had worked his way up to be a Music Team Lead and did such a good job leading a team that he became a full Team Lead for games. Stuff like that happens all the time. He couldn't have told you fuck all anything about animation BTW...we had animators and an Animation Team Lead for that.

Well actually I should amend that. He could tell you ONE thing about animation: whether he liked the way something looked or not. And that was ultimately an important skill to have and why he was trusted to lead the team. He had a vision of how things should look and he worked with the Art & Animation guys to make sure shit lived up to the vision while also taking their feedback on how things would look best.

So yeah, basically everything TomChan said is wrong. This has been your crash course brief overview of some stuff from the game industry. There's nothing deep here and nothing mystical. All of this is readily available by just looking up what these roles do though there can be some confusion as different titles can be given to the same role. Team Lead can be Project Lead or sometimes even Game Director and other stuff like that. Produceers are pretty much always Producers though because it's a standardized term lifted from movies basically.

There's really no point in trying to debunk you.

What you're saying is just out of touch with reality.

You think a movie that cost $100 million just to produce (not accounting for residuals, marketing and more) and that only took in $200 million at the box office is successful despite theaters taking 50% of ticket sales.

This is flat-Earth-debunking level obtuseness.
Oh and just so you know, since you like to dunk on my love for Pokemon as if it's yet another gotcha, recent Pokemon games [satire-levels of rambling about how awesome Pokemon is that totally doesn't support my contention that you are Mortal Kombat's ChrisChan]

Pokemon is definitely fun. Very well designed series of games overall. Haven't kept track of it though. VGC? Looks like a competitive Pokemon? I'll give it a look to see if it's worth watching. I can dig stuff like that.

Anyone caring about being cool while on a forum about competitive Mortal Kombat likely qualifies as needing to wear a helmet.

But "guys I took a writing class while being unable to write coherently" is more valid than "this guy is a literal trained, paid animator and provides examples of industry standards for animation that MK does not match"

LMAO

Please start a Youtube channel. You'll have a Kiwi Farms thread in record time, bro.

"Guys, the animations look stiff and bad because MK is "more realistic"...DUH!"

Behold compilation of animations that are utterly implausible as a fighter and some of which defy anatomy and basic balance making them IMPOSSIBLE. The exact opposite of 'realistic'.

Let me guess "This guy is conspiring to attack Mortal Kombat because something bad happened to Street Fighter so this guy had to deflect to Mortal Kombat because any criticism of NRS is actually a giant conspiracy to undermine them! There is no valid criticism of NRS!"

Peak insanity.

A compelling argument. I will counter with Yeah, your post is hard core bs...

Spend a lot of time on Kiwifarms, eh? I'm not surprised.

I stand by that - for the most part - animations in this game are fine. They're significantly better than the days of Jason/Terminator d3.

There's some rough stuff in it, but nowhere near as bad as the internet makes it out to be. Especially since, by the time you've seen a d3 or even a string, you're already thinking about something else in the match.

Ah, but silly me, that's assuming people that criticize the game actually play it. As we've seen, that just never happens.

I also think there's a lot of really good animations and call backs in the game. Like Ghostface dropping their knife during their throw and having to pick it up afterwards. Or how good the two Ghostface command grab looks. If you've seen the latest Scream, it looks pretty much exactly the way they do it in the movie.

Same with Conan, to be honest. If you look at how Arnold moves and swings his sword in certain scenes, you'll find it's practically 1-to-1.

Or take Quan Chi. All of his down pokes, his standing 3, his 1,3 - they all look like he's casting spells/summoning shit mid-fight. It's cool.

Anyway, my point is that while it could always be better, there's plenty of good animations to be found.
