liu kang's visionAlso just noticed...Cyrax changed from Botswana to Niger? ...why?
We aren't talking about graphics. We are talking about design. Please find me another actual MK fan that would pick these MCU girl boss versions over the OG Cyrax and Sektor. They could have simply dropped their MK11 designs directly into MK1 and it would have been perfect. They looked amazing in that game and they weren't even playable.Yes, I prefer the high definition, extremely detailed and fluid models over guys in red, blue, and purple BMX pads.
I'm talking about original designs too.We aren't talking about graphics. We are talking about design. Nice "Only A True Scotsman" fallacy, by the way.We aren't talking about graphics. We are talking about design. Let me ask you this: Would you really feel comfortable paying modern prices for games that never looked better than say, the UMK3 era? When we as a collective society didn't have the means to produce the detail and realism of our imagination, audiences were able to appreciate the effort regardless. We were able to better suspend disbelief. We let our imaginations fill in the gaps. When they released, the Cyborgs looked like robots and were pretty ominous.
Lacking the ability to suspend disbelief is not a flex.
To me, that's the issue with hyper realism as a style. Leaves very little to the imagination and really restricts possibilities.
That said, I really just want them to be actual Cyborgs. Idc about anything else at this point. I genuinely hope the story leads to a new Cyber Initiative somehow.
They are over-designed lol. They definitely look super epic and like they're about to wash anyone up in the room, but also like someone was told to give 100% and they gave 225%.I feel like MK11 Cyrax/Sektor are overdesigned.
Let me ask you this: Would you really feel comfortable paying modern prices for games that never looked better than say, the UMK3 era?
Second question: Do you think modern games - at their current price points - should look worse in order to leave room for one's imagination to fill in the gaps?
Genuinely asking.
I don't get this take at all. I like classic cyrax/sektor, I agree that mk11 sektor feels a bit too cluttered, but otherwise they're cool, and I think the new designs, visually, are fine.Cyrax and Sektor look absolutely ridiculous in MK1
That's really really strange that you keep referencing Black Panther when talking about a black person with an accent. Very strange. Why do you keep bringing up graphics? Do you understand the difference between design and hardware limitations at the time? There's a reason why the UMK3 skins sell better than any other of the ninja skins in MK1. It's because it's a great design.
Cyrax and Sektor look absolutely ridiculous in MK1 and I feel like most agree. Are the animations and graphics better than the MK3 versions? Yeah.....of fucking course they are. It's 2024 and it's been 30 years since the first MK released.
And we can call the MK11 designs overdone or overdesigned, but they look badass to me. Sure as hell a lot better than Shuri wearing a Spirit Halloween Iron Man costume.
There's something other than better vs worse. I do not like realism as an art style in video games, typically. I'd rather play Doom than CoD if it were down to just visuals.I feel like MK11 Cyrax/Sektor are overdesigned.

I think that's generally fair, but also an exception. What I mean is that most consumers of Triple A titles have a certain expectation of how a game should look, and it seems like photorealism is the most prevalent style in the industry. There's something other than better vs worse. I also did pay today's prices for games back in that day. I'm old, Yusuke. I mean, they've gotten like $10 more expensive, but that's not a lot. Video Games are one industry that inflation is optional. I don't buy cosmetics and shit. I payed $80 for Pokèmon Stadium on N64.
And things don't have to be worse to leave room for imagination. Just stylized or not Photo Realistic. Fantasy should be Fantastic, not realistic.
But to answer your question directly, what's the gameplay like? Cause if it's phenomenal, I'd absolutely pay full price for a "bad" looking game.
Graphics are nothing to me, I like art direction.
Silent Hill 2 is actually the example I was going to use earlier. It is to me the #1 GOAT survival horror, my second favorite game of all time behind FF7 OG, but I'm not as hype for the remake as I should be because the graphics almost look TOO good and TOO realistic and it feels like it's taking away from the "feel" of Silent Hill in the trailers. It's hard to explain, but I wish they toned it down some. I don't feel like that about MK, I actually prefer MK's art direction for MK wayyy more than if they adopted a SF one for example, but definitely feel like that about Silent Hill 2 so I see what he means.I think that's generally fair, but also an exception. What I mean is that most consumers of Triple A titles have a certain expectation of how a game should look, and it seems like photorealism is the most prevalent style in the industry.
Personally, I think there's room for both. Take the most recent Silent Hill 2 Remake trailers that came out today. They're absolutely stunning visually, imo. They're also super realistic.
Do we need realism in MK? Maybe not, but skewing closer towards realistic bodies and the like are part of what made MK visually unique, even back in the arcades.
We all talk bad about the tasteless designs, but MK9 made Mortal Kombat somewhat culturally relevant again, and since that title we've had "this doesn't feel like MK," comments. MK is definitely better stylized IMO, but the fact that the arcade era stood out for it's time is an important point. Does MK being hyper realistic still do that for the franchise? No.I think that's generally fair, but also an exception. Because they're afraid to do it right lol. NRS sometimes get this weird stick up their ass when it comes to "realism" in costumes. Sometimes they care, sometimes they don't. We could have gotten the legit flaming skull costume, but they were probably worried how fatalities would look on it. They probably had the same dilemma in MKX when it came to Alien and Predator having weird shaped heads, but they said fuck it. Half of the fatalities in that game have weird clipping and don't look right on those characters, but who cares. My prime example that photo realistic art style makes MK cringe is flaming skull Scorpion skin in MK1.
That great concept from the 3D era, an homage to a classic arcade fatality, one of my favorite skins as a teen, looks like shit in this game.
After reading this I don't know if I agree with some parts though. Like how would it not "feel" like MK? It feels exactly like MK to me lol. There are some parts I have been vocal about, like I despise the MCU-style multiverse crap, and I think there are too many good guys now/not enough bad guys, but other than that I think it feels like what I would expect. And a lot of people have even argued roster wise that it's stacked and comparable or better to MK9.We all talk bad about the tasteless designs, but MK9 made Mortal Kombat somewhat culturally relevant again, and since that title we've had "this doesn't feel like MK," comments. There's definitely room for both, and maybe MK fills that quota since Tekken and SF lean a little more Anime/stylized, but I'd rather a Stylized Realism if realism is needed, like MK9.
MK1 is a beautiful game, but the art direction has been mostly misses for me. Idk, I feel like I'm just rambling, my overall point is that when we all saw the BMX pads in the 90s, we believed they were as threatening as the designers intended because of art direction and presentation.
The aesthetic has leaned heavily into the Injustice style since Inj1 to MKX. At the time I thought it was a unique style for Injustice, but its been apparent in every NRS installment after Injustice 1. Slimmer average character models, "superhero" styled outfits, prettier less grimey and dark stages and tone, sure it's just as violent, but the floor used to get covered in blood and shit. Blood would fly out of the fighters. There was more camp and it took itself far less serious. Like it was dark comedy. Quan's Neck stretch or beating someone over and over with a limb came off as goofily brutal and now similar things come off as trying really hard to be dark and spooky and the goofy bits are because it's not good not because it's supposed to be goofy. After reading this I don't know if I agree with some parts though. I don't think story because MK9 brought in the jobbers to lose all their matches to advance the story too, like Reptile, Kano, Sheeva, etc existing to take all the Ls like Reiko and company took in MK1. And even they were using time traveling in MK9. "He must win" lol.
Game is just as violent as ever, no need to elaborate there.
And the OG games stood out for different reasons. No one had seen guys ripping hearts out and pulling out spines in a fighting game so it was like wait what is and it grew huge. And for their time they had a realism effect and look to them, they even try to emulate it in the character select screens, which was in direct contrast to other FGs. Technology and capabilities are the only things that changed, but MK has always been in that direction. And those bmx pads didn't look threatening at all, they looked "cool" for its time and looked realistic, which doesn't seem that different from what they try to go for with the modern versions of characters.
Iykyk. That all I'm going to sayyyyyyyyyyy. Can't wait to see your gameplay. Lolol we gotta get some sets in. It's been foreverI'm looking forward to Team Cyrax/Cyrax
I'm sorry you think females suck...?? wtf dude? calm downThey changed Cyrax’s gender to female which sucks and nationality to Niger instead of Botswana.
