Elden Ring (DLC Announced!)

Definitely get some Griffith vibes from him and Marika both, Marika more so with her appearance and Miquella thematically. With the egg thing in the Mohg arena being somewhat similar to Femto’s egg, as well as the way people talk about him giving me vibes of Griffith’s return and the hawk of light stuff.

Griffith is very similar to the anti-Christ from the Bible, so I don’t think From is ripping anyone off, it’s a fairly common character type.
Agreed on the Marika part. Just to clarify, I'm not implying From is ripping off Griffith, it's just that Miyazaki is a fan of Berserk and the Souls games are full of little nods to that universe. It wouldnt surprise me if Miquella ends up having a femto-like second phase in a boss fight or something, and I'd love that.

I hear you, some kind of symbolic equivalent of Griffith’s rebirth for when Miquella comes back on the scene

Miquella looks so creepy, can’t wait to fight him and explore the new map.

Excited to try out whatever new weapons are there, this is sure to be their biggest expansion yet.
I'll be genuinely shocked if we end up having to fight Miquella. It really does seem this is going to be us working with Miquella's followers to fight against Messmer and whatever other horrors await us in the Shadowlands.

I kinda hope they subvert it, seems too obvious

Doing my first melee only no summons basic knight run, or at least will till I get bored and want to use a special weapon and respec, but I’ve just been rolling with the standard longsword the vagabond starts with. The weapon art is a lot of fun, staggering bosses in like 3 hits off the R2. The basic R1 combo is pretty reliable too.

Nice! And yeah “Square Off”, the Longsword AoW, is extremely good in PvE.

Man, praise the erdtree, always dread the Godskin Duo, but the fat guy didn’t roll one single time in this fight, was a breeze otherwise.

I just completed my 3rd playthrough (more of a refresher playthrough). In the Mountain of the Giants area I did not know there was a giant version of the crawling hands thing, man screw that enemy. They creep me out in general but this massive one, bruh.

Edit: Greatsword is too buff, it made this playthrough so easy and at a lower level too.

Even though I still have covid and feel like shit, still hyped for the DLC. Plus the 1.12 patch is fucking AMAZING especially for PvP. Idk if I’ll be up at midnight be gonna be playing as soon as I can since I have work off. Silver lining of covid I guess? lol

Hoping I have a few hours to play this weekend!

I’m gonna start with my blasphemous blade character, which I expect I’ll ditch to try out the new weapons, especially since Messmer, the wicker man, and others are bound to have fire resistance.

Haven't bought it yet, but partner has been dedicating so much time to it after work and it looks hard as HELL. He's got a very highly leveled character and even generic enemies, especially minibosses, are chunking the hell out of life. Absolutely love it.

The stat increase items are a very interesting way to balance things too. Overall looks like an S+ experience so far.

It’s very common to get 3-hit by jabroni enemies, but they kinda encourage the new mechanic of finding the items to up your defenses and damage.

And it only applies to the DLC world, very smart way to make it a new challenge regardless of how strong you were in the main game, as well as give you a sense of progression in the DLC without ruining the balance of the main game.

I’ve only put like 3 hours into it so far, but it is all high quality stuff. I’ve killed 2 of the big bosses and they were a blast, will wait a bit to talk about them because spoilers.

The exploration is a lot of fun. The map is fun to explore and it’s very dense, while still being intuitive. The quality is definitely more on the level of Limgrave, rather than Mountaintop of The Giants which was pretty shit to explore in comparison.

The new weapons are really cool, but man I hope there’s a way to buy larval tears. Because I want to re-spec and try a bunch of things, but as far as I know there’s a finite amount.

I’ve heard people say this DLC is bigger or as big as the first Dark Souls and I’m stating to believe them.

I killed Varre the first time around so I killed him again when I started New Game + and now I realize I'm gonna have to take the long way to the DLC lol
Damn dude. I make sure to never kill that weirdo after the first playthrough, I killed Malenia already and have no desire to do that awful castle with commander Niall or go back to the consecrated snowfields.

Just blast through Morgott and the capital haha

Doing good crushed last night Godrick>Rykard>Morgott and I remembered the castle layout. Now I just got to stop dying to this invasion by sanguine noble in snow lands

The DLC has been great! Super tough for my lvl 138, but I’m pretty sure it’s tough no matter your level thanks to the DLC “leveling system”. It’s the first time I’m actually using a Spirit Ash consistently. Only using it on bosses though. I don’t think I’m gonna use it on every boss, but it makes a 20/10 difficulty wise boss fight go down to a 9 or even 8/10. The Spirit Ashes, or just having ANY extra character helping is such an enormous help. Which is why I’ll never understand people doing entire first playthroughs with not 1 but 2 summons of actual players. Which a lot of the times it’s their overleveled friends they summon via a PW. And since the downscaling doesn’t work properly, they pretty much get carried through the game.

But anyway, so far the DLC is vast. Idk if there’s a “good” way to go about it. As in like in the main game, you’re suppose to do Limgrave+Weeping, then Stormveil, then Liurnia, then Caelid, Altus, etc. Since I’m playing it almost completely blind (like 99% blind, I did see SOME bosses and weapons beforehand on that early release stream they did). So far, one of the weapons you get early on had been my favorite. Don’t have the game pulled up so can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s a Greatsword thats AoW sends out a white projectile then you can follow it up with this dashing/lunging heavy swipe attack. It’s a super fun and good weapon especially since I’m a strength build. But also been using those reverse grip swords a bit, and the fist weapons “Pata”. Those are broken in some boss fights and I’m sure they’re good in PvP as well.

Anyway, been taking my sweet time. Even though I feel like crap I’m still not rushing through anything. Already found quite a few “secret” areas I would’ve never found had I been rushing through everything.

Also pro tip, don’t forget to leave messages on the ground in the DLC. Mine are getting rated all the time, which are actually helping. Like they’re getting rated enough to the point to where I won’t heal in a boss fight because I’d rather stall for a message rating heal instead, lol. Anyway, still gonna stay away from spoilers and social media for awhile. Just wanted to share my first thoughts so far. I’ve died waaaay more than I thought I was going to, which makes me so happy that the DLC is actually really challenging!

Just started a fresh base game to get refamiliar before starting the DLC. It is my first and only full souls game (tried 1 and 2 but it didn't stick). Naturally I started a Kotal Kahn inspired run. Good luck and fortune fellow tarnished! I was humbled quick and glad to see the DLC is proving even more of a challenge

I have to say I agree on the spirit ashes. It was sorta irritating getting one or two shot on bosses where you’ve already kinda paid your dues and know them inside and out, just the execution aspect of having to be essentially perfect for long fights made me call a spirit ash on some of them.

There’s one fight I’m “stuck” on, in the sense of if I call mimic I think I’d beat him in time where I’m at, but I get the sense he’s one of the coolest bosses from has ever made. So I’ll either call mimic or go look for more blessings.

Either way they’re a lot of fun and it seems like these bosses due to speed and mobility AND range do a better job of staying on you rather than being completely distracted by the mimic.

Not to spoil the map for people, so I’ll be vague, but I think the map is much less intuitive in terms of where to go first because of the verticality aspect. In the base game what you see is kinda what you get on the map, but in this map, you see something, go there and realize you can’t reach there yet so you need to look for a pit or something to reach there.

Spoilers for the 3rd main dungeon:

I was shocked to face Messmer so early. Which means he isn't the main villain of the DLC, as many of us were speculating.

The boss it's self was really fun, I fought him at blessing level 7, we killed each other at the exact same time, and the remembrance received message appeared right before "you died", respawned, and thank God he was still dead.

More spoilers involving additional Berserk references (with only 5-6 hours of time in SOTE) - still includes story spoilers, so once again avoid if you haven't killed the boss in the dungeon I'm referencing - you will know if you did.

Miquella is even more obvious as a Griffith reference with Messmer dead so early, his crew is also a reference to the band of the hawk, and I fully expect to have to kill them. They will be killed by us for being so enamored with Miquella, the same way the band of the hawk were killed due to not seeing Griffith for who he was / not developing as individuals (thematically)

The little fellas in the shadow keep are the torturers that work for Mozgus in the conviction arc.

The Belurat Gaol is very similar to Ganishka's flesh pit esque torture area.

At the very beginning area, there is another tree of corpses reference.

The solitude armor minus the helmet is pretty much bang on the berserker armor. It being a heavy armor with high poise means you could rock the Greatsword (the dragon slayer) and trade hits very similar to how Guts is able to scrape by in tough fights.

^with all the Berserk references, it's obvious From / Miyazaki have a great love for the manga and understand the themes of it. The most exciting game that would never get made to me would be From getting to make a Berserk game. The souls-like gameplay of persisting to overcome a great challenge is very appropriate for the themes of Berserk, and the apostles / human soldiers Guts faces obviously lend themselves to From's insane enemy variety and boss fights. It'll never happen but damn I'd love it, with Berserk being a story that really speaks to me and many others - I'd also bet the Dark Souls / Berserk fan bases have a lot of overlap.

LEGEND

YES!
Only got to play for about 30 minutes so far but the Blackgaol Knight was a great introduction to the DLC for me.

Booted up my game for the first time since a few months after launch. Changed all my gear from PvP stuff to a standard Mid roll, high defense, Shield + Straight sword setup for PvE.

Happened to find the Blackgaol Knight right away and he quickly punished me for fighting like they were a typical Souls enemy. Had to switch back to an aggressive parry focused setup like it was PvP in order to beat him. Hopefully all humanoid enemies are this smart and aggressive from here out.
