2100+ died in us today in last 24hrs, according to the new in AU... that is fucking insane.
It's to the point where I can't process it anymore.. Like, I know it's happening, but mentally it's so much every day that I kind of have to accept it and move forward.

I don't know if anyone else feels like this, but it's a weird state of mind.

You can easily process that 10 is 10 people dead, each with their own lives who can't tell their story anymore. Heck maybe even 100 people. Once you reach the 1,000+ it becomes harder to wrap your mind around and just becomes meaningless numbers, people become statistics.

It's the difference between understanding the moon is far away from the Earth and then being told how far away the moon is from the Earth and trying to process that number.

Yeah.. I guess it must have been like this in big wars, too (like WW2). At a certain point, it all blends together and you just hope that it ends sooner rather than later.

I read an account today of what it’s like on the ‘front lines’ here, and it’s sobering:

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

I know it's hard and quite a lot of people die atm, but can you imagine that approx. 9 million people die of hunger each year? A friend of me posted this and I did some googling and the number seems to be correct. Puts things in perpective, I hope poor countries/communities will mostly be spared of covid-19.

No. It’s in his mouth in the upper part. He went in for surgery today on his teeth for extractions. And that’s when they found the cancer. Completely unexpected. All we can do now is make him as comfortable as possible for as long as he’s willing to fight!
Make him as comfortable as you can, and hopefully he passes peacefully!

Reminds me of a quote that Joseph Stalin said: "When one man dies, it's a tragedy. When a thousand men die, it's a statistic."

It's an awful thought, but sadly, there is truth in it.

It's a tragedy on a scale that's really hard to comprehend.

Heck even without the death aspect, I think it's hard to really grasp the scope that 7 billion people are alive on this planet now each with their own lives. Like I understand that as a fact but actually trying to picture that many people going about their life? Insane! Mind blowing even!

I love watching vizualization videos of people trying to demonstrate these astronomical numbers. Here is a great one of a dude using grains of rice to visualize Jeff Bezos's net worth:

At only 7 billion compared to Jeff's 122 billion, the population of earth would be only 6% of Jeff's rice pile, roughly 1/17 the size.

I think my favorite are the scale of you and animals compared to microbes or the scale of the Earth and everything else in the universe, or just our sun compared to other stars. And bombs to other bombs.

I tried to find one of those microbes-to-solar system comparisons first, but couldn't find a good one. I love when they get to the end and then quickly zoom back down to scale. There was also a good one about the most expensive items in the world, including weird chemicals that are like twelve billion dollars per oz, but I couldn't find that one either.

[edit] Just found the one on expensive items:

Rice is amazing. Sorry you don't like it, sir. I can see your comparison to maggots, however. It is strikingly similar.

Y'all ever seen what a trillion dollars looks like?

I know this isn't on the topic of the Coronavirus, but Karaoke's post made me think of this as I like seeing things like what he posted earlier. xD
