Why do Fatalities Anger You?

I’ve been playing MK games competitively for 12+ years now. Mainly UMK3, played MK9 and MKX competitively for a little bit, never really got deep into them though. Anyway, even in UMK3, doing a Fatality was seen as disrespectful and made people so mad. And most Fatalities back in the older games took way less time than they do now.

I’ve noticed that people get extremely angry these days if you do one. Of course I understand the “waste of time” angle, but is that really the only reason it makes players so mad? Maybe it’s seen as a form of bragging that you won?

I remember back in the day playing against @REO. While we were running sets, he would do a Fatality literally every time he won. I wasn’t salty, but I did ask him at the time why he did one after every match. He simply said “to increase your rage meter”.

So that kinda stuck with me because it was a little irritating and I didn’t know why. So I started doing them fairly often. Now I do not mind if my opponent does one every match. I just use it as time to think about my loss and what I did wrong and what I should do in the next match. And in ranked, I do it every time I win. For similar reasons, but in ranked if you win you don’t get the option to sit for 30 seconds before you press rematch. You also don’t get the option to go back to character select. So literally the only way you get extra time to relax is if you do a Fatality.

But boy, do people get furious if you do a Fatality. They will start teabagging, send hatemail, etc. So it seems REO was absolutely right and it’s still true today. Fatalities increases your opponents rage meter.

So, how do y’all feel about Fatalities? Do you hate when someone does them even once? Do you only hate it if they do it every time they win? Do you ever do them? Do you only do them if your opponent does? Does it make you really salty or do you not mind?

Just really curious.

been doing a lot more fatalities in this game for the measly 3 hearts u get but now that i no longer need hearts i'm addicted to the hate mail i've been getting

me personally i think fatalities puts the idea in your head that your opponent thinks you're trash. then it becomes a question of how does your emotional psyche deal with your opponent thinking you're trash especially while they're beating you.

currently it doesn't affect me because i actually am trash, maybe when i finally git gud i'll have a stronger response

I honestly don't care. In one of our recent KOTHs, even though we were doing no Fatalities to each other to just keep focus on the matches, I got hit by an inadvertent one, and I just took it in stride. Shit happens.

As you said, I could see it where you're doing it to get a psychological edge. I had one person online challenge me where his record was much better than mine. I ended up taking the match and hit him with a Fatality as a statement.

I only get mad because I don't have a lot of free time with the game, especially with the server kicking me every 20min and making me DC during half the sets I play.
I do a few fatalities myself because of the stupid severed heads grind though. But only against characters whose cosmetics I want.

That's why I mainly just did that in the Endless Towers

I will do a fatality if:
  • Payback if they just did one to me
  • Just messing around every once in a while
  • Need a bathroom break lol
  • Random player I don’t know that’s spamming, etc.
Bottom line, the fatalities in this game are ridiculous. They feel like an hour long, and most of us have seen them tons of times. Gotta win humble and lose with grace though.

Skill should be about the better player winning, not trolling them to piss them off like Reo was saying. I get that the other player could already be on tilt, that’s one of my biggest flaws myself. Back in the UMK3 days we would always just try to cancel a jab into a special move to close out a match.

I will tell you the MAIN REASON I kept pushing myself to play MK as a kid, since it has to do with this subject. I was in grade school playing UMK3 in our town’s arcade every weekend. For a kid I was “good”, but then came the high schoolers and college kids. One time I was just playing single player and an older kid pumped in some tokens. I shit you not, like 20 kids gathered around the cabinet to watch us. I’m Reptile, he’s Robo Smoke. It’s a little back and forth at first, but he pulls ahead in no time. I didn’t even know what Rep’s juggle/inf was until years and years later.

So after that, all the kids and my brother (who I looked up to as a kid) watched me get a grenade stuffed down my throat. I walked away from the machine and went outside, fist clenched in disbelief. My brother comes out and he’s like “well you got your ass handed to you there huh?”

I never felt humiliated playing a game before in my life, especially in front of my brother because I really cared what he thought. Honestly, one of the most humiliating moments of my life actually. So after that I kept playing, but life happens. School, then a job, then marriage, then a kid. Years later I found UltimateMK and realized how much I was missing from MK in lack of knowledge and also the rich community of great players with sportsmanship. Now we have Testyourmight and here I am. Again. Lol

So anyway... that’s my story. 5 minutes in an arcade and the first fatality ever done to me partly pushed me to play MK competitively today. That’s how I really feel about fatalities, I never forgot that day. I hope that I still run into that guy someday for payback online or at a tournament. To this day I still have no idea who that was and my town isn’t huge. (60k people?)

I admittedly didn’t read the entire post but to answer simply:

Fatalities were designed as a sign of disrespect and a middle finger to your opponent. And they take extra time. It’s literally you saying fuck you after the fight so yea if I get fatalitied I’m picking a top tier bodying you and tea bagging lol

Dunno if anger is the word I'd use, but they are highly annoying. We've seen them hundreds of times, and like someone said some of us have limited time per play. If I know I have 3-4 hours tomorrow to play, I don't want to spend 15 minutes of it watching fatalities, I want to be playing. It's just a waste of valuable time.

To be honest, it is part rage. Sure, "it wastes time" is a generic answer to mask the whole reason why I hate when people perform a Fatality on me after every match. Right after losing my last pixel of life, I am just ready to get to the next game ASAP when playing a set...especially if it was a close game. When someone hits you with a fatality every time, it just makes the loss linger, which can get in your head sometimes and add frustration. As opposed to ending the match quick with a normal or special and allow me to make adjustments without having to think about it for the extended seconds that fatalities add.

I personally would prefer that someone end the match quickly as opposed to doing a Fatality everytime, as it is respectful and efficient when trying to level up.

I definitely feel like fatalities are disrespectful. Especially Johnny Cage's feature length finishers. I never do them myself, I just don't want to waste time. I'm often a pretty respectful player, sometimes to a fault if I'm being completely honest.

That aside tho, I'll absolutely be getting friendly with Shang's Kintaro fatality. It's simply too godlike not to share

Doesn't bug me. A few years ago I played against someone in UMK3 and did it. Just a habit. He said "do you really have to fatal every time?" I didn't say much to it but the dude who taught me how to play UMK3 a long time ago heard that story and said "Yeah I'd do it every time too, once I beat you, you lose the right to tell me what to do" lol

The only time I get a little "annoyed" by it is when you lose to someone online with like a terrible connection or something or someone that one and done's you and does it and leaves. I see the latter as cowards not worthy of my time anyway but for the most part even that doesn't really phase me.

I don't mind when people do a fatalities on me , it's only when they do the same exact one after every.single.win that I start getting a little annoyed, but its mainly because we have been playing many games and I want to get into the next one lol

So its not angry as much as it is me being a bit impatient and just wanting to play lol

Finishing move features in games are a nice thing to have. But when they last forever like Ultra combos in killer instinct where Im spending minutes and not seconds, it feels like they are just being disrespectful and I could just be....actually playing the game. Its kinda why MVC3 is notorious because its just downtime and its one sided (even though you already lost). Fatalities are more lenient because we've all seen them and can expect them to end at a set time with no extensions. Brutalities are nice because they are very quick. I'm the type of guy that will always low poke after "FINISH HIM" just so we can both get a quick rematch.

If you wanna kill me in a bloody / violent way, make it quick. We are human players, not dog toys. I never fatality players that match my skill level, but i may brutality them just for fun. At least its quick.

I generally think the person wants hearts or Jade's head and I don't give a fuck otherwise.
I said this before but I have no idea why people are angered by anything in an online game, included repeated crouching or a taunt button.
I'm not. The only thing that angers me is when I fight a Jax online and they do d1 f3 and I can't poke out

I used to play with a guy regularly frome this site and we mever fatal'd each other. One day he fatald me after winning one game after i won like 3 or 4 in a row. Then i fatald him afterwards like 4 times in row and he lost his shit and started cussing at me lol
