I think for the next game/timeline/universe whatever they go with they ABSOLUTELY NEED to be done with the Special Forces characters as a main focus of the story.

There's just so much lore time that can be better spent on more interesting characters that gets wasted by focusing on the Special Forces family tree.

Also, I really feel like they need to do away with the "humor" and edginess already. Early MK games had such a unique, creepy, mysterious atmosphere to them that has really disappeared ever since they went with the action/comedy movie style of the newer games.

Also, big big big missed opportunity with the alternate timeline arc. How cool would it have been to see them bring in the MK movie timeline versions of some of the characters. Even if just for a quick scene or 2. They already have the Shang Tsung actor's face in the game. Maybe add in the MK movie Reptile or the movie version of Liu Kang somewhere.

I still do not understand why Kronika brought certain people from the past with her... Espacially the heroes?

Somehow it makes no sense
She didn’t summon the heroes willingly. I take it she meshed the MK 9 era with the current timeline mainly to get her hands on the people she wanted like Shao Kahn and Sektor, and thought nothing of the past heroes since she was assured of her success from the onset since she’d done this hundreds of times before from what she says to Raiden.

Hmmm but still I do not understand why not everyone was brought as well from the MK9 era and when Kronika has done it before

Neat things from intro dialogues, obviously unclear if some are canonical, but it can give us some insight on what has become of other characters and such:

-Apparently they retconned Kung Jin and Kung Lao being cousins, Kung Lao is Kung Jin's uncle now. (Kung Lao + Liu Kang)
-Frost + Cetrion apparently killed Fujin. (Frost + Raiden, Cetrion + Raiden)
-D'Vorah killed Ferra and Torr. (D'Vorah + Kollector)
-Skarlet didn't die in the MKX comics and saved her legs. (Kitana + Skarlet)
-Kung Jin returned to the White Lotus after the events of MKX. (Cassie + Kung Lao)
-Erron Black has had relations with both Nitara and Skarlet. (Skarlet + Erron Black)

As far as other characters go(Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or missing something):

-Still unknown about the whereabouts of Kenshi + Takeda, but from their endings in MKX we can kinda surmise where they went.
-Goro is clearly dead now, as you can see in Goro's Lair.(Strangely has his arms back though)
-From the sounds of it... Smoke is still a revenant. Sindel is possibly dead.
-Characters that are MIA: Stryker, Nightwolf, Sareena, Tanya, Rain, Reptile, Ermac, Bo' Rai Cho, Tremor, and Triborg.

I mean, if the ending of this game is canonical, this all probably doesn't even matter for MK12... lol

More like elder dumbass

Does anyone else thinks the faces in Injustice 2 were a liiiiitle bit better? Facial animation I mean, I think characters in INJ2 had a bit more nuance like Harley and Poison Ivy.

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
Ehh Harley's face was done well and Superman, Batman really stuck out to me in I2. But MK 11 is easily just as well if not a little better. Sub, Sonya, Raiden and Jacqui's face looked so real it's kind of freaky lol I mean makes sense they used facial scan tech this time combined with mocap so no doubt it looks amazing.

I have to say that one part with Raiden and LK fighting like tons of times with the same outcome was pretty nuts, at first I was like WTF is happening lol.

Okay. Just beat the story so I can finally comment on it without fear of reading spoilers.

Direction and characterization wise, it was the best MK story to date. The mocap technology is at its best and the facial expressions are really selling the characters' emotions. The action scenes are amazing, there were some clear fan-service moments which really made me jump from my seat (and I'm almost forty years old).

I really liked the development of certain characters, with Kitana, Liu Kang, Raiden, the Cage family, Kotal, Jade and Baraka standing out. I was especially and pleasantly surprised with how NRS handled my Tarkatan general. Kitana treated him with respect and he acknowledged that, deciding to become something more than a mere lackey of a man he once respected solely because of his power.

But Kitana truly steals the show, imo. She finally decides to earn her birthright and actually does what Kotal struggled for so long. Shao Kahn's 'where was this Kitana all this time' line could may as well be the voice of the player at that point. Very well done.

Raiden and Liu Kang's relationship also gets lots of development, explaining in a way how those two were friends, rivals, enemies, teacher and student in an endless, timeless circle. Raiden decided to give closure to that spiral and Liu Kang rose to the task and accomplished what millennia-old Elder Gods could not.

Those characters helped me realize how other beloved characters of mine had no further development. Sub-Zero served no purpose in this story and could might as well not be there. Old Johnny also had little to do here other than give a 'grow up' speech to his younger counterpart. Jax's betrayal may seemed wtf for some fans, but at least it helped the character get closure to the inner demons and brooding that festered inside him all these years.

It is ironic, that of all the characters that were reunited with past selves and the timeline clusterfuck, the one that is in perfect harmony with past, present and future is none other than the most despicable, back-stabbing asshole in the entire franchise: Kano. Kano immediately hits it off with his counterpart, becoming best buddies and helping each other with no hesitation or second-guessing, effectively turning out to be one of Kronika's best backup plans. Sonya killing two birds with one stone is symbolic: those two (Old Kano/Young Kano) were practically one character.

Kahn vs Kahn: a battle almost all lore fans craved ever since they read the MKX comics and loved the newer Outworld ruler. It delivered, imo.

Kotal got less development here than in MKX, and it is only due to Jade that we learn more about the man, and less about the warlord. And that's ok - it's a good pair, and I enjoyed watching them together. Their chemistry is palpable, making even Kitana question her best friend's intentions (the "Are you my friend, or his consort?!" line was amazing).

Cassie's voice actor was an amazing choice and helped me like the character a lot more than in MKX. In MK11, we get to learn more about Cassie, a more mature Cassie who takes her position seriously and is often tasked with the worst choice a Lawful Good character can make: Love vs Duty. Chapter 1 sells this exceptionally well, and it is later when she half-mutters "How do I say this?" when she must tell her younger mother that she had to deal with old Blade's death just a few hours ago that I was completely sold on the voice actress.

All in all, my favourite MK story mode in terms of fan service and feels.

However, the reset button in the end is something all fans understandably are afraid of, and angry about. All the character development? Gone. Every character in the franchise? Not guaranteed to exist anymore. I am not worried about the latter, because if a character is popular and interesting, he will come back, better designed than ever. And characters which died can easily come back now (Quan Chi, Havik, Hsu Hao, Shao Kahn, etc.)

But in terms of story in THIS particular game, there were some things which made me ask: What was the point? Especially due to the ending. Why did Hanzo die? Just before the ending, I thought I knew - because NRS wanted to make Scorpion a revenant again, but a force of good this time. But the end has a reset button, so it doesn't matter. Hanzo could just as easily have lived and nothing would have changed in the end since history is reset. What was the point of gathering all of Earthrealm and Outworld forces in the final battle? Not only does God Liu blast all the Oni by himself - making the army of the forces of good unnecessary, but before fighting Kronika, the battle is reset, so there was no point in gathering an army in the first place since Kronika was like "lol - REWIND!". The very nature of Kronika made the last few minutes … weird, and a lot of stuff that happens during the story of MK11 turn out to be unnecessary.

In the end, however, I am pleased. Yeah, Noob Saibot didn't do shit and Baraka didn't get a story chapter and a couple of other stuff, but this was the first MK story I played through that didn't make me feel underwhelmed and anxious to see it 'fix' itself every now and then. In MK9, from the moment Sindel kills 90% of the cast, I felt something was off. For every second of MKX after Quan-Chi's death I felt something was off. But in MK11, I didn't feel that. I liked what I saw for the most part, and now I am anxious to see the inevitable reboot of my favorite franchise (along with Resident Evil).

Damn good job, NRS.

Best Mortal Kombat story by far. Not sure if it beats Injustice's 2 one though.

When it comes to time travel I've never seen one that dosnt fall apart if you think about it too much. Things like Kahn dieing and the other's still been Revenants I just read as time working around the changes to "course correct". I'm sure Kano's early death would have also had significant butterfly effect had time not adapted to the change.

If i was going to pick faults id say why did Kronica not work in secret if all she needed was time to gain strength (and get the souls) also why not enact her plan before the character's were even born. Best just to go along with the ride and enjoy. I feel any time travel story gets a pass in this regard (like in MK9 why was the message Raiden sent through time so cryptic etc etc).

I did feel the last chapter some what anti climatic. It would of helped if Kronica got a death or two in, especially considering it would all be reset soon after... and I was totally waiting for THAT music to kick in ;)

On the positive side every character seemed to get their due and acknowledged past events perfectly. No one seemed like a jobber and there was lots of shades of grey in the story which i enjoyed. I really really thought the Raiden/Lu Kang conflict resolution was amazing and retroactively made rhe accidental death in MK 9 so much more meaningful.

Overall a solid 8/10 from me. Would of been a 10/10 had they added Sindel and Shinnok into the story mode (they felt missed with their family running about), had a sharper last chapter and ended with the MK theme in the final fight.
I disagree a bit there the story was convoluted. Plot holes unexplained and an underwhelming ending. Overall for me it's a 5 but the game itself looks amazing

If we're talking time travel what movie or media has done it without plot holes?

If you've been to the cinema this week THAT movie had similar plot holes when you really stop and think about it. Lost is my favorite tv show ever and that had it as well.

Where it mattered in the characterization and dialogue they nailed it IMO, apart from as we both agree the final chapter.

Maybe I'm being oversensitive i just hoped for some things to have an end, like let the remaining revenants die or something. Characters that had no business in the game also made it hard for me to enjoy the story mode.

You … gu?

No, I wasn't. That doesn't mean there weren't plot holes, I just didn't mind them that much. For example, I'm not a power level whore, so I don't mind if character X beat character Y who beat character G who beat character X.
Sorry the you gu was a misspelling. I guess the plot holes made me kinda a little disappointed. For me mk 9 so far had a better story.

I agree with just about all of this. I was really enjoying myself up until that ending. It's somewhat cool, and I'm sure they aren't going to get rid of everything MK as we know it, but does make it all feel a little bit pointless.

Honestly my biggest disappointment is almost that there weren't more characters or even NPCs in the game and story. They did such a good job with what were there, I want to see more.

Let’s see whose fire burns hotter
It’s funny how they pictured Shao Kahn being THE STRONGEST and SCARIEST MK character that could be only defeated by Liu Kang but then he serves to Kronika like a complete jobber, gets his ass handed to him by Kitana and he also gets ridiculed by the entire cast via dialogues.
NRS are masters of destroying their own characters.

Kitana was only able to kill him because he was weak after his battle with Kotal.

I thought they showed him as been a real threat.
