In a tournament setting if you main an unlockable character, that character has to be unlocked before it can be used in tournament. None of the stations usually have save data before the tournament. So if someone plays that character...they have to speed run story mode to unlock them so they're selectable to play in the tournament.

MK9 - Cyber Sub and Quan Chi
MKX - Shinnok
INJ2 - Brainiac

All required a story mode speed run for tournament use.

In this instance Kronika would be the unlockable character (and i’d be really happy if that would be the case) but she wont be so i mean i didnt expect this game to have secret characters either

It's not like we were pulling the idea of secret characters out of our asses after he'd literally said that in response to a question about unlockable secret characters. And not to forget that MK9, MKX, and Injustice 2 all had an unlockable character.

The point, being that you were literally told flat out that there were 25 characters at launch. Paulo mentioned off hand in an interview at the launch event that there would be secret characters.

Y'know, like Reptile in MK1, Jade, Smoke and Noob in MK2, etc. You also had to achieve certain things to unlock the fights.

But "go awf" Giffy.

As I've said for a while, I think there are two options:

1. Paulo was mistaken in his offhand comment

2. There will be a character unlocked via story mode (probably Frost), but Daanish does not consider them a "secret character" because they're part of the 25 that have been announced, like Shinnok or Brainiac. You had to unlock them but I wouldn't call them secret.

Either way I am confident there will be 25 characters at launch, including Shao Kahn, and we already know who they all are.

Right, and I agree that the game has a base roster of 25 like EVERYONE has been saying, but that there will be three unlockables as well. They're not going to straight up tell us 28 when that would ruin the "oh shit!" Suprise factor.

My main reason for thinking this is the leaked roster screenshot. It had every character on there that is in the 25 person roster that we know (before those 25 were officially confirmed), plus 9 additional blank spots. I think 6 of these will be the first dlc pack and the other 3 are unlockables.

Assuming those blank spots weren't just dummy slots that happened to be rendered as symmetrical -- which is very possible -- I think it's more likely they are planning an additional three bonus DLC characters for after the Kombat Pack, ending with 9 DLC total like Injustice 2

But the Switch leak showed 13 DLC, so maybe 6 KP1, 6 KP2 and Shao Kahn?

I don't like putting all my stock in "leaks" but I think NRS wants a wow-factor this game and 3 unlockables would do just that

Maximilian covered this specific topic in one of his videos. Those photos were taken of an unfinished product that nobody outside of the people working on the game were meant to see. Numerous things can change during development, including characters being left on the cutting room floor.

You've had your hopes up because you saw an unfinished product and expect it to remain the same at launch.

It's also possible (though I think unlikely) that any planned secret playable characters were revealed in the leak, and thus NRS went ahead and officially revealed them anyway. I think it's more likely that Paulo either misunderstood the question, GameCrate misinterpreted his answer (e.g. some characters hadn't be revealed yet, therefore Paulo still considered them "secret"), or Paula was referring to Shang Tsung's appearance in the Krypt as a "secret" at the time. Or NPC cameos ala MKX are "secret" characters that aren't playable.

But I could be pleasantly proved wrong :D

As @methademic notes, I'm pretty confident that's the 6 characters and 7 skins we already know are coming with the Kombat Pack.
