How Mortal Kombat 11's Custom Variations Will Work In Competitive Play

This seems to be receiving a negative reaction from the "influencers" but if they were to change it how do you propose they do it for offline tournaments with every player having to set up two or three custom variations for 3- 5 characters or more? Ranked has to have the same rules as competitive tournaments imo.

Ed boon said 3 months ago they were leaning towards presets for competitive, I'm surprised everyone's surprised.
Yeah, but that was before all the Kombat Kasts featured every character's every single move...

...and featured those characters being played EXCLUSIVELY with custom loadouts vs. other custom loadouts...

...and it was before everyone got their hands on the game and fell in love with custom variations...

...and it was before NRS made it a policy to say "we won't discuss how variations will work until a future date" on every platform where they were asked how variations will work.

If it was always going to be exactly what they said on day 1, why the evasiveness? Just answer the god damn question when you see the community is hyping itself up into the stratosphere.

I don't know about you guys but I'm really excited to find out which characters get stuck with just 2 variations, while others have 3, and others have 4.

That sounds super fun. I hope some of my favorite characters only have 2 variations.
Mine already does. Welcome to club. There's tissue on the left...

I don't play competitive modes for a couple of reasons, but this does seem really off to me. :T

Build up hype for custom varations, one of the main selling points of your game, and then say it's not allowed in the ranked mode? That's just ain't right. :(

That’s literally what I said a couple of days ago. This shit is too much to balance and memorize. Nobody would give you that freedom
ITS NOT THAT FUCKING HARD! All you had to do was set a time limit for each person to choose their moves. Its only 3? Then if you choose to counter pick, you have that exact same time to change your variation/character. And CLEARLY the other person can see your moves too. Whats difficult about that?

I would have preferred custom variations, for sure, but this is the expected result since this is basically what they said at the premier event.

That said, I hope the variations from the beta/stress test aren't what we're getting for those characters, for the most part! Jade was one of my favorites, but I don't really want to play any of the presets she had. This could really kill some characters for me that I'd have otherwise enjoyed playing and IMO that's the real shame of this.

They say they're trying to balance the variations and that they're putting a lot of thought into their arrangements so we have to wait and see on that front. It is, if nothing else, heartening to hear that what we get at launch is not necessarily permanent, and that they're going to change/add variations as necessary.

Pick your moves on the select screen.
You know what that would work, just like how you select a skin etc. Not sure if there is some kind of technical issue that would prevent that.

Also Im pretty sure the presets in the Beta will not be the presets in the full version.

Looks like we’ll get that in Injustice 3. Can’t say I’m not happy

if nrs thinks this is the best course of action then I'm good with it. maybe after a year or so and they're more comfortable with the balance of the game they can open it up more but for year 1 they probably want to control it a little more

Well, since they're just doing variations akin to mkx, I wish they would have just done it whole heartedly. Mkx variations were, imo, better themed because they were always intended to work together. The current variations in mk11 come across as half baked. I understand the decision, but I'd rather they not have even bothered with the kustom stuff to begin with. I never touched those moves in I2.

This is exactly how I feel. Will most likely not focus on the whole "Tournament" or "Ranked" modes because of this. Kinda sucks, but ah well.
But it sounds just like I2, where fighting with abilities meant fighting with gear stat boosts as well. And no one wants that, so even in casual matches I would force competitive in I2.

Thats what im hoping too from this unfortunate news. To keep it all the way live, all the character ive played Ive NEVER settled with their presets. I always switched 1 or 2 moves out and it allowed to fully explore my playstyle through set character. @16 Bit Is this the final direction you guys are going with this or is it subject to change ?Question mark?
