MK Community Leaders?

The community didn’t start when the tournaments became popular, there was a lot of work and a lot of carrying though out the years even before the MK Online Gaming

A few of the leaders the MK community has have in different ERA

@Shock without a doubt a great pillar of the classic MK ERA

@Konqrr one of the biggest influences in the early days Konqrr.net was the bomb, even before YouTube he was already showing combo videos snd responsible for s lot of the traffic MKO had back in the day

@Check same as Konqrr, these 2 are from a different world and the community owes them big time

@mastermalone one of the pillars in the 3D ERA the voice of the communty over a decade ago, the one who forward our feedback to the Midway team and the one responsible for bringing news to the communty.

@General M2Dave, The God of MKD a big influence to a lot of the gamers, earned his respect by trashing opponents left and right and since then this fella is a true leader respected by pretty much the entire community back in the day

@REO without a doubt a player who has inspired lots of people and because of that he is a leader in this community

@STORMS, Responsible for giving the online community a place to stay in touch a true community guy

DarkTrax and @MaceWind, Meathook, Trax and Hook not known here, Mace isn’t as active as he used to be but along with others They kept one “at that time” Popular MK site running while the owner needed to take some time off.

I have plenty more but unfortunately they disappeared, now my job is to bring them back once again.

You don’t have to like my opinion I just gave you a little history of this community and it’s leaders over the time.
Gotta love your humility... lol.

Chap, I appreciate the mention but your name goes beside mine, sir.

We don't really have "leaders" so much as we have "community celebrities"

Which isn't really so bad. Kinda the anarchic nature of most fighting game related communities where anyone can be someone if they put in the effort. It motivates alot of people I think to contribute if only because it means they get to be king turd of shit mountain for a day.

It is a hobby and the only real leader you need is me. Me telling you to stay in school and get a job. Do this on the side. Don’t let anyone try to tell you to follow your dream of being a competitive gamer unless it’s in league of legends.

Ohhh and what M2dave said above

MK vs. Injustice is greatly exaggerated/overblown. The vast majority of the active part of our scene will play and support whatever the newest game is.

It’s mostly the vocal minority of people who just sit around and complain that try to make a controversy out of one vs. the other. But you have those kinds of people in every community.
Are you sure about that? I only play MK, I have zero interest in INJ, but I don't sit around complaining about INJ, I just don't say anything at all b/c I don't care. Once interest here in MK11 dies down b/c INJ3 comes out, I'll probably disappear again until the next MK game.

How would you know how many people there are like me out there?

Why not? He was doing community events, bringing people into the community, gave out his tech and training techniques, etc.
At one time absolutely but if we're talking currently then no. Although I hear Red Hot Sundays might be back soon.

Maybe anyone donating there time to uplift the community is a leader. I didn't read the thread after the first two pages but what is the criteria for being an NRS scene leader ?

xenogorgeous

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
While I reject the notion of leaders, one has to think... why not Tyler Lansdown?
He's professional, polite, and I believe he represents our collective interests very well.
yeah, Tyler is really passionate for MK as NRS Community specialist, so, good choice ! Tyler is a good example on how to behave being cool regarding MK questions related

There are very important figures in the community like Ketchup & Mustard, SonicFox, Reo (and guests), Honeybee and Mr Aquaman off the top of my head

Then you have different important figures like 16bit and Paulo who work for NRS but do talk to the community every now and again.

But leaders? Do other fighting games have leaders or do they have important figures just like us? I know Soul Calibur has Kayane and Tekken has Aris, Rip and JDCR but I hesitate to call them leaders.

What makes a leader anyway?

Tyler is a good guy (Derek too) and I honestly enjoy their schtick on streams, are they good at the game? Mhmm..mmm....
But damn if Tyler doesnt try his best when he plays and I still remember him showing up for a casual sidetourney.

Something about the energy between them from X Kasts to 11 Kasts changed for the better. Maybe it's the goofier antics near the end during the battle for the belt. Maybe it's because they've established a repertoire together now that they've been doing this for awhile. Whatever it is it's working.

All That said, if I had to pick someone on the NRS payroll It'd be 16bit, all the way. I've seen him as far back as 2010 getting Cyrax and Kitana footage for us MKO scrubs at PAX. Then you have MK9 tournies, Injustice, MKX, I2 and 11.

The only one I can say definitively is destroyer, at least right now. Maybe honeybee as well? But destroyer 100 percent

How could I forget ketchup and mustard... them too. So those two and destroyer

some heroes are born, some made, some wondrous
Do you feel there are any leaders in the NRS community? If so, give me names and why you feel that way. Or if you feel there's nobody taking the lead role, explain why?
I do not think so. The communal nature of the FGC and of smaller scenes particularly like the MK Competitive scene means that there is no strong "leaders". What we have really, I think, are pillar community members. I guess that is sorta similar but I think a "Leader" is a term that just doesn't fit.

I tend to think of the scene in a few ways...

  • High Profile Players
  • TYM Forum participants
  • Ambassadors
  • Tech Finders
  • Event Organizers
No one is going to call you (JBeezy) a "leader" but you are defiantly one of the main contributes to casual discussion on this corner of the community.

SaJam is nearly absent from the larger NRS community but is a massive spokesman, what I call a Ambassador... Ultradavid is as well... they link us to the greater FGC community and are advocates for us. We have players like Honeybee, Shinkydink, SonicFox, Brady, Reo, K&M and the like which make tons of video content... people like McFly and GunShow doing mind bending Tech Videos. KP, Aquaman, Echo and more doing commentary... Lets not forget Storm for running this site at a financial loss for decades. Then you have the "influencers" like Max or Super or w/e

I could go on and sorry if I didn't list someone... as my point is that you CAN'T list them all. We are a true community.. as in all the parts make a whole.

The biggest thing I have noticed about the NRS scene and the FGC as a whole is the rise of Social Media. High profile people no longer really hang out on social hubs like TYM... instead the community has fractured into all these individual places like twitter, youtube, twitch, discord etc etc.

This fracturing is really bad imo... but that is how it is...

Thank you, Gerchap. I work just as hard now and as i did back then, if not even harder.

My most recent contribution was buying a PC strong enough to run MKX, in order to play as NPC characters, just to make a combo video with another member of the community, called MKX Corruption. The video itself is a huge commitment, playing with both controllers at the same time.

The video also took 5 months to edit. In the 4th month of editing, i took a break and went to the store, and got brutally mugged on the way home. It took me a couple weeks to recover from the attack, and i still somehow found the strength to finish editing that video. I also had a couple fights left to record, which isn't fun when you have to use both controllers at once after getting smashed in the head by a mugger. I consider this the biggest contribution of all listed above.

I've done a lot for the community, but those last few stand out the most to me. Moving from Florida to New Jersey to go to college for Game Testing was another huge commitment. I gave up my entire life here in Florida, including pets that i loved very much. I did this because i wanted to become a game tester to help make the best MK possible for the community someday.

These are the type of commitments i've made for the community, along with breaking down every character to the fullest extent. I've tried to do in year long projects for many years now, because i didn't want to look for credit for anything. A year gives everyone else a chance to post things before me.

I've tried to be as humble as possible about everything i do for a very long time. I've tried to be a leader in the best way i know how. I spent 3 hours a day replying to fans on youtube for over 10 years. I've done everything i can possibly do to be a leader. Whether i am or not to anyone won't ever change the way i feel, and the things i have tried to do to help, inspire, or toasty boost your way to victory (i was just diagnosed with Chronic Urticaria around the time of Toasty Boosts and maintaining a 4.00 GPA, but still dedicated myself to finding them as much as i did).

Again, i don't want credit from anyone as a leader, because i won't change the way i feel. Ever. To know i inspired players like Sonic, NinjaKilla, Vman, Hro, Tony T is all i could of asked for. I still remember when i met Sonic at NEC12, and he was so excited, he wanted to show me a Cyrax combo. Stuff like that sticks with you later on in life.

I continue to fight everyday to continue doing what i love, but its tough. I can't promise any more sacrifices than i have already made. Another year long project is a huge commitment that i'm not sure i can make anymore. That's another year of my life gone. I've already sacrificed so much, i'm just not sure if i should do it anymore. Noone should have to sacrifice that much of their time for combo videos. I need to work towards a better future for myself.

In the end, i just want people to know how much i've really sacrificed. I could go into more, but i've already gotten too personal. I hope you all can forgive me for that, and anything wrong i did in the past. Just know the good outweighs the bad, and the bad was usually brought on by something else that was happening in life at the time. It's very hard for the people around you to see you sacrificing so much with these combo videos, and not be worried about you.

I don't want to feel the last 15 years was for nothing, including those 5 years of college for Game Testing. In the end, i just feel like i've failed. That's where i'm at right now. I just gotta keep fighting everyday, like i said earlier. Just hope everyone understands everything i've given up these past 15 years. I pretty much gave up my life for it, and in the end i just feel like i've failed. I'm never a part of any stream, or anything. I felt hated for a long time. I feel left out. I feel like i'm never allowed to play any games with anyone. Then when i break down every character for a year straight, just for one single video, i feel like it never even happened. That Injustice 2 video was 8 hours long, another huge commitment. I still did it, feeling the way i did. I can't do that anymore.

I just hope things get better. And shoutout to guys like @Mikemetroid who have stuck with me through everything. Always did the best i could, and in the end, that's all we can do in this life.

Later everyone. Thanks to anyone who read this whole thing.

@Check

I appreciate all the work you do, your videos have helped tons of people including me.
I still don’t understand how you come up with all these finds from the very beginning until now. Definitely a valuable celebrity in the NRS community

I wish you the very best and when you achieve your dream job please let us know, we will celebrate this achievement. Keep doing what you’re doing because you are definitely from a different world

Ps. Remember this?

I was browsing into Weedoshi’s work and found this 14 year old signature haa. It took me way back to the early days
