Are There Any Leaders In The NRS Community?

Leaders? No.

But there are people who do theirs to try and have the best of the community in mind while "representing" us. While others just do their thing without having everyone else in mind at all. That's fair enough, it's not their responsibility to "represent" us. But it's still nice to see some nice and cool guys out there doing it though.

All in all, it's up to the individual to be at their best when being out there "representing" the MK/NRS community. But when someone acts really bad, it still reflects on the rest of us. And when that happens it's important to let it be known that those people don't represent the community as a whole.

Back in the days when MK9 and Inj 1 weren't about money you could see leadership in the top players of the community, Pig of the hut, 16bit, the GGA guys even Tom brady etc. Their initiative grew the community to where it is now.

From MKX to here the new blood of top players became a bunch of entitled elitists who think they are playing for money and demand payment, sponsors and special treatment at tournaments.

They started hating on TYM because it was open to everybody in the community and they didn't want to hear anything about the game from someone who wasn't in their elitist club. They moved on to their private channels and no longer engage with the "casuals, randoms, necros" or whatever demeaning term they can come up with. Some of them engage with the community through streams, but that is all you will get.

Most of the top players of the community today are unrealistically trying to make a living out of playing video games while alienating the community that could potentially get them there. If anybody is looking for leadership to grow the community or make it better its best to look somewhere else.

As other have mentioned, we don't really have people who are pillars of the community anymore. There were several back in the MK9 and Inj1 days though. Mainly tournament players who would regularly post here, make guides, and/or organize events that furthered community hype and exposure.

Some lost interest and became less active, others were discontented with TYM and fell into the trappings of Discord and private messaging, and others still got older and just don't have the time for various reasons.

But really, it's all a result of the systemic changes to modern internet society compared to 8 years ago when MK9 came out, which is why you don't see new community leaders phase in while the others phase out. Discord wasn't a thing, while twitter and other social media weren't nearly as big either. Today, these platforms allow players to vent their opinions and ideas under their own terms, while facing less dissent within their own micro-communities than they would on an open, global forum. It's an attractive option for some, but doesn't help build a large, cohesive community like a centralized forum does.

Meanwhile, as esports and sponsorships became more prevalent in the NRS community, more and more top players began to try to make money or careers off of these games. As a result, they are trying to grow their brand via youtube, twitch, patreon, etc, so these and twitter is where they do most of their community interaction.

Simply put, modern social media and gaming culture support cliques more than they do cohesive communities, and it's hard to have community pillars when the community is fragmented to begin with.

Not since everyone dipped out on TYM and started the Illuminati. TYM itself is an influence on the community regardless who actually says they don’t visit anymore. Players who still compete all still visit and use strategies,tech, etc from here but they are not active anymore nor try to help the mid level/low players. So to me it’s up to the Illuminati members to publicly support one another and get behind a common cause.. We’re stronger when together than apart and that showed for ij2.. if it feels like there’s no sign of leadership then that’s one of the reasons & that’s just my opinion though .. It also doesn’t help that the top player(s) of the games publicly bash the game or hate on it harshly. Leaders don’t do that. The culture of the NRS community as a whole not just TYM needs a reality check.

My point is every part of the NRS scene is divided to the point nobody seems they wanna deal with each other and there really hasn't been anybody to unify the community as a whole.

HOWEVER, I do see Mr Aquaman putting in work representing alot in Injustice 2. but again, its hard to show people interest in a game the majority is not interested in. Hopefully that will get stronger in MK11. I see Kitana Prime with nothing but positive vibes. I see him come between two people beefing to dead that shit and get back to the love rather than hate.

I see SonicFox stepping up a bit when Chris G decided to slam the NRS community, SonicFox took the initiative to defend it. I was actually impressed by that.

To me, those are the top 3 I see major potential that can unify the community as a whole. But hey, im just thinking out loud.

Double shoutout to Mr Aquaman, who was always keeping NRS in the conversation regardless of the community turmoil. Dude is solid.
K&M have consistently been voices for good out there, too.
Some others to list, but I’ve got to go take a shit, and I ain’t shitting right lately.

On topic, I'm not sure games really have community leaders anymore. I get the vibe that its split for most games between competitive players and popular streamers/youtubers. I'd lump some tourney organizers in there as well, but the e-sports stuff kind of overshadows smaller events.

All 6 of them have the qualities I feel to be leaders in the community.

Theo had something brewing with his podcast in Injustice 2 which if the game was enjoyed by the pro players really could of grown.

Darth Arma is really doing his thing right now going back to basics and growing the local scenes.

Honeybee with his tournaments, vlogs, and YouTube presence I feel he is liked and respected. He kept you up to date with everything IPS related with Injustice 2 and continues to with MK11.

Without Mr Aquaman I think Injustice 2 would of died without question. He has really proven through Kombat Kup and War Of The Gods over the years how much he loves the scene and the players. He even set up The Clash to settle beefs in the NRS scene. Also he is one of the only tournament players I know in MKX that had his own tournament that I would consider a major for MK in The Commonwealth. Mr Aquaman is definitely a leadership material for the community.

Reo I feel is the OG that passionately loves MK and his podcast he does I do listen to what he says. His content is insightful and he is the bridgeway to all content from past, present and future. Reo is definitely up there!

Kitana Prime to me is a great spokesperson for our scene and is a great person to share our scene with those outside of NRS as even in Capcom, Namco circles he is respected. Also outside of 16 bit nobody loves Kitana more. I mean it's in his name!

To answer the question though there isn't a leader but those 6 in my eyes have potential.

A runner up I would put in there is Zyphox if he makes content again because he was very big on sharing content especially in Injustice 1.

I hope they all flourish in MK11!

MK Community Leaders?

The community didn’t start when the tournaments became popular, there was a lot of work and a lot of carrying though out the years even before the MK Online Gaming

A few of the leaders the MK community has have in different ERA

@Shock without a doubt a great pillar of the classic MK ERA

@Konqrr one of the biggest influences in the early days Konqrr.net was the bomb, even before YouTube he was already showing combo videos snd responsible for s lot of the traffic MKO had back in the day

@Check same as Konqrr, these 2 are from a different world and the community owes them big time

@mastermalone one of the pillars in the 3D ERA the voice of the communty over a decade ago, the one who forward our feedback to the Midway team and the one responsible for bringing news to the communty.

@General M2Dave, The God of MKD a big influence to a lot of the gamers, earned his respect by trashing opponents left and right and since then this fella is a true leader respected by pretty much the entire community back in the day

@REO without a doubt a player who has inspired lots of people and because of that he is a leader in this community

@STORMS, Responsible for giving the online community a place to stay in touch a true community guy

DarkTrax and @MaceWind, Meathook, Trax and Hook not known here, Mace isn’t as active as he used to be but along with others They kept one “at that time” Popular MK site running while the owner needed to take some time off.

I have plenty more but unfortunately they disappeared, now my job is to bring them back once again.

You don’t have to like my opinion I just gave you a little history of this community and it’s leaders over the time.

This is how I define Leadership:

One of the qualities that define a good leader is honesty. When you are responsible for a team of people, it is important to be straightforward. Your company and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behaviour as a key value, your team will follow.

I used to lead a crew of 5 to 60+ people in my old job. There are some people and groups in this community I wouldn't even ask how is the weather outside if we're both standing in the rain.

No there is NO clear define leader in the fgc let alone our community. I do see a few who could fit the bill but there own agendas conflict with this full time role.

@x TeeJay o is correct about the cliques, illuminate groups. Those people serve their own agendas. The can pose as voices of the community but clearly not leaders who speak on the behalf of the majority of the same said community.

Like I said there are a few people who could fit that role.

The real question is do we even want/need one.
