MK11 Johnny Cage General Discussion

pure.Wasted

'ello baby, did you miss me?

As much as I despise Uncaged I'm still starving for Cage content. Here we get a look at the Stunt Double abilities. It's nice that SD doesn't go away on hit and their stupid + on block but that start up though....plus having no Shadow Kick, IDK. Maybe there is potential for some good Oki options? I guess we'll find out.
Lmao wtf. 2:18

"Fuck you, fuck you, FUCK youu!"

Anyone else worried that Johnny looks like he might be one of the weaker characters in the game.

I know we haven't seen any high level gameplay with him but he has poor mixup due to lacking an overhead as his frame data seems kinda bad?

Well, at least clothesline launches in the corner :/
Until they mkx stunt double nerf it the second it comes out.

Also at 7:28, seems it's not that good. F4 on hit into clothesline, opponent gets in a hit on you and they can block after.

Which means they can jump in on you as well, so it's not that good, at least from f4.

If behind SD is overhead maybe he'll have his mkx HTB back.

Pretty sure ive seen someone combo after clothesline SD mid screen. Might be on woolies YT channel.

I want to know if you can do Nut Punch then Stunt Double and hit them with a jump in punch or empty jump in sweep when the SD hits and then lead into another nut punch combo. :D

Anyone seen if SD hits oponents mid throw?

That crossed my mind as well, but people thought that he was mid tier at best in MKX since he lacked a low starter, but then he turned out to be one of the best in the game.

The mechanics are drastically different here, yeah, but I have faith that he'll be a respectable pick. His fatality alone makes him at least A-tier in my book.

It's still sad to see 90% of the character possibilities with the SD move.
That means that we will pretty much be forced to lose shadowkick to be viable.

Let's hope i'm wrong.

Honestly, i don't enjoy playing as set up characters at all, so i have no interest in SD moves....so if that's his only viable variation i guess I'll be focusing on Jade.

Remeber how good his backflip kick was in 9? And how useless it was in 10?

Circus

Part-Time Kano Hostage
In his demo build, his frame data suggested that he should be controlling space with his super fast and safe high projectile while playing footises and whiff punishing with his high F344 and mid F44 strings.

I know it was just a demo build and stuff will change, but stuff has been pretty consistent with only slight tweaks so far, so I think it won't be too far off.

Johnny literally has the best and safest high projectile out of all the characters shown so far. That's nuts.
Skarlets high blood shot is super good at 21frame startup and -5 on block.
Kano's knives are up there too with 20frame startup and -7 on block.

Johnny's Forceballs are 14frame startup and -5 on block. That's crazy fast AND safe.

He'll definitely be good for sure, and you could change his forceballs to the arced high and low ones too.

No matter what though, if anyone is worried that Johnny isn't going to be good, take a look at his rough frame data here and I think your mind will change.

If you thought Scorpion was good at whiff punishing and footsies, then Johnny is a god.

This is what F344 looks like:

244 goes into the same multi-kicks as F344 that lead to the same spacing for whiff punishing.

Thanks for the analysis

I can't wait to play him

I know I already posted it on another thread, but it's just too awesome

I love Johnny as a character...but did anyone else see Liu's kombat kast and just think.....Johnny who?

There gameplay looks league apart. Sorry for being a boner killer

I didn't even consider it when I first saw the F3, 4 4 string, but his advancing knee no longer being F3 is gonna take some getting used to.

Arcing fireball is -22 on block and will miss up close, mid, and far unless the opponent is literally fullscreen max distance, which he will never be.

The guy in the uncaged videos was trying them and missing every single time.

So if they remain the same, they will be a waste of slot.

Yeah, no way am I using those fireballs. His projectiles were arguably the worst in MK9, and with the straight fireball being as good as it is here, why switch it up?

Cage is already gonna have a good anti-air in his Shadow Uppercut, although part of me wishes that his Flipkick was how it was in MK9, I loved that move so much. From what I've seen of his moves thus far, the only other move that's a bigger waste of a slot is Throwing Shades.

I'm anxious to find out more about his "Pissed Off" move DBF3. We've seen snippets of it in certain trailers. It's just before the 2 minute mark in the Old School/New School trailer and it was in his reveal trailer. Looks like you can amplify it to end in a flip kick. Johnny with a command grab?!?!

Who hired this guy, WTF?

That's for sure the Pissed Off move?

TYM's #1 L taker.
Per @Tundra81's request, Here's a casual's perspective :D. Played Johnny quickly at Pax (on the switch version lol) using his A-lister variation. Only got 1 match against a Medium difficult CPU, since I was on a bit of a time limit. The CPU was essentially braindead and didn't block or fight back really, so no experience on block pressure =\

The A-lister variation contained the sunglasses throw, Say Cheese, Flip Kick, and shadow kick and straight forceball base. I gotta agree with Uncaged's video much to the dismay of you guys lol, I wasn't a fan of this variation. Started the match off with sunglasses throw which triggered the KB, and aside from the KB, I have no Idea what else you would do with it. This move sucked.

Say cheese seems like it will have pretty good utility against characters who will be in your face a lot. Leaves your opponent standing, amplifying allows for combo follow-up. I believe it hits high, but feels like it have some competition with Nut Punch.

Flip kick was eh, leaves your opponent too far to follow normally, amplifying it pushes your opponent even farther. Might have some corner potential, but I could go without this move.

Overall he felt good to play, his strings and buttons feel good and flow nicely, I wish I could have gotten more time with a different variation, but I think you guys will be happy with him on release.
