Injustice 2 Combo Breaker 2018 Results and Top 8

AHHHHHHHHHH! CAN'T HANDLE ALL OF THIS EXCITEMENT! This Top 48 for Injustice 2 had so much going on, we could have dedicated a whole thread to all the upsets. But I'm not there and I would need to be tuned in to WAY more people to catch all those updates as they happened. Event 1 of the Injustice Pro Series. From Sonic being sent to losers (by Knicks) to Theo being knocked out of his first Top 8 (by Scar) in 5 years, this is certainly was an event to remember.

Our Top 16 went down as followed:

Winners:
Noble Rewind vs. DR Gross

bc Honeybee vs. Method Sylverrye

HZRDS Knicks vs. Noble Tweedy

bc Biohazard vs. HappyPow

Losers:

Echo Fox Scar vs. CLN Dab

Gunshow vs. NASR Tekken Master

PG Hayatei vs. Echo Fox Sonic Fox

Noble Semiij vs. DF Grr

After ALL of that, our heart stopping Top 8 finally took place. This might have been the best possible way to kick off the next IPS. You can catch the matches and who made this Top 8 yourself on Netherrealm's Twitch or you can catch the results in the spoiler down below:
Up first was Gross against Sylverrye, Black Adam against Hellboy. Despite a last second revive from Sylverrye, Gross got the double KO to secure game 1. Not sweating that loss, Sylverrye met him with a win in game 2, Gross taking it right back in game 3. Going straight through to a game 5, Gross finally won the set at 3-2.


Next up was Biohazard (Bane) vs. Tweedy (mystery pick revealed to be Dr. Fate). Not quite ready to board the Bane Train of Pain, Tweedy took game 1, keeping Biohazard too far away to do too much damage. Game 2 was essentially a mirror of game 1, Tweedy zoning out Biohazard and Biohazard just getting in score a few hits. Looking to change things up, Biohazard brought out his Starfire for game 3, saving himself from the straight 3-0. Not feeling good about that last round, Tweedy swapped over to Starfire himself and won the set 3-2 in a game 5 that went down to the last hit.

Now to losers, we had Scar vs. Gunshow. Scar went with Supergirl against this Firestorm specialist. Despite what some may say, Firestorm clearly wasn't nerfed to oblivion as Gunshow took game 1. Not liking how things went, Scar gave Red Hood a shot. Unfortunately for him, it was not enough and Gunshow was able to get the 3-0 and send Scar home.

Shaking things up, Rewind and Sonic Fox took the stage, two players with a million characters in their pockets. Rewind settled on Black Adam while Sonic decided to take everyone to mix city with Michelangelo. After an unsuccessful game 1, Sonic swapped over to Captain Cold and had a dominant showing showing for game 2, forcing Rewind to change to Blue Beetle. Now facing elimination after another win from Rewind, Sonic picked up his OG main for IPS Season 1, Red Hood. From there, Rewind went back to Black Adam, but it didn't do the trick and Sonic Fox clutched out game 5 for a 3-2 win.



Now in the next stage of the bracket, Gunshow's Firestorm played Sylverrye's Hellboy. In the battle of the reds, Gunshow came in hard for games 1 and 2, putting Sylverrye in a really tough spot. After getting some advice and taking a second to breathe, Sylverrye came into game 3 like a new player and finally got a point on the board. Once again, we had a set go down to the wire and Gunshow ended up victorious 3-2.

Next up was Biohazard, aiming to avenge his brother who was knocked out of the tourney by Sonic Fox earlier in the tournament. It was an IPS classic, Bane vs. Red Hood. Doing what he does, Sonic took game 1 despite some impressive reads by Biohazard. Unfortunately for Combo Breaker, the Bane Train of Pain came to a screeching halt with the end of this set: Sonic Fox took the win 3-0.

In our winners finals, Tweedy finally brought out the secret S-Tier Starfire against Gross' Green Lantern. In a war of zoning the likes of which the world hasn't seen since the great Sinestro Corps Wars of the 30s, Tweedy and Gross each took a game apiece to start. But one of these players had to have the stronger will to win, and it ended up being Tweedy who won 3-1 and secured his spot in the Grand Finals.


In a strange turn of events, Sonic Fox and Gunshow ran the Firestorm mirror in our next match. Sonic, being Sonic, took 2 decisive games over the man many would consider to be the main Firestorm representative. Showing us just why that was, he put an end to Sonic's win streak by game 3. However, that's all he was able to do and Sonic Fox won the set 3-1 and advanced to losers finals.

Now up against Gross, Sonic Fox swapped to Captain Cold while Gross went back to Black Adam. Sonic getting a bit too trolly, lost game 1 when Gross made a last second clash and got another chance against the severely damaged Cold. With a lot of momentum going into the next match, Gross took another game with a well-timed super. With his tourney life on the line, Sonic brought out his own Black Adam for the mirror and finally got a game over Gross. Not letting the loss get to his head, Gross devoured Sonic's health bar and won the set 3-1 and earned his spot in Grand Finals.

Our final set was the winners final rematch between Gross and Tweedy. Going right back to where they left off, we had Green Lantern facing off against Starfire once again. In a game that went down to the wire, Tweedy took the first victory. Feeling confident about their previous games, Gross stuck with Green Lantern, giving a dominant performance as he won game number 2 of this set. This victory finally pushed Tweedy into a character change, bringing out another top-tier zoner in Dr. Fate. The change proved to be a smart one, and Tweedy was now on tournament point over Gross. Going down as the people's champ, Gross stayed with Green Lantern going into game 4. That decision brought us to a game 5 that came down to the final health bar and resulted in a bracket reset, Gross winning 3-2.

In game 1 of the new set, Tweedy decided to keep playing Dr. Fate, confident that he had the right character. However, the momentum from the previous win and the victory over Sonic carried Gross forward into another win. Enough of losing, Tweedy went back to Starfire, the character that helped him defeat Gross two sets earlier. Getting things under control, Tweedy sent Gross back to the control screen to maybe reconsider his character choice. But Green Lantern got Gross this far and he knew it. Tweedy was able to take the next game, but if Gross was going out, he was going out a Lantern. With that all said and done, Tweedy took this final set 3-1 and took the title of Combo Breaker Injustice 2 champion.



What a crazy way to kick off the next season of the Injustice Pro Series. Tweedy is our current #1 spot, but things can certainly change. With as crazy as Combo Breaker was, who knows what's in store for later this year. That'll be it for NRS this year, but there's still another day of Top 8s tomorrow if you still want to catch some games. Have a great night everyone, I know I need to get to bed.

Tournament was amazing. I stayed up a whole night and I don't regret it. Maybe it's hype that do a talking now, but I think it was the best Injustice 2 tournament EVER.

Congrats to Tweedy. He proved himself. All those grinding payed off.

Gross played amazingly well in matchups I was thinking are the hardest for Lantern. Huge inspiration for grinding instead of complaining. I will probably rewatch winner's finals and grand finals multiple times.

Excellent tournament. Really happy that Starfire took the whole tourney, yes it was Dr. Fate as well, but Starfire Tweedy used Starfire a ton in this tourney and he took it with her. And we saw Sub-Zero from Buffalo, Leonardo from Slips, and also Poison Ivy and Michelangelo, so I'm really happy about this tourney.

Congratulations to you @Tweedy , you went in and you took it like a boss, you earned dude. Keep it up.

I hope NRS will change tournament mode in the next game, so you can't reset match during x-rays // supers // fatalities etc
I actually agree. But I also think you shouldn’t be able to rematch until the match is completely over, including fatalities. I understand you just want to get into the next match, but it absolutely kills the hype, the tension, the pacing, it kills everything. You can’t get hype after a good match if they IMMEDIATELY rematch before it’s even over fully.

Yeah. But we have to remember that disable option to pasue and hit rematch during tournament mode must come with proper button check feature so we won't end with ridiculous situation.

I think it would be better to put it as rule in the tourney rather then an option in the game. That way the whole button check won't have any problems.

Maybe disable pause after the first round or something.

How about when sonic denied us that super? Tournament low.
I have a feeling he did that because some of his inputs wasn't coming out. He did mention that however the tournament set up was created problems with move inputs. But nonetheless, that was a bit in poor taste.

For real? Not saying I doubt, but just surprised. If it was a problem I would've thought that'd be pretty high priority to be sorted out.
