I Dropped My Main And This Is Why

tafka Djinn

One for three off the roof
With Lewis Kangaroo, I played him because he was good, and I was actually good at playing him. The final tweak to DF's F213 FBRCs pushed it to the point that I didn't think I could consistently nail it if I went to a tournament, so I dropped him for my Borg boys, only to have them nerfed in ways that have me peeved.
Now I'm just going to stick to my pocket trap characters, if I can't play what I'm good at, I may as well play what I enjoy.

I've rotated characters frequently, but my first and only drop I'd really consider was Cassie.

Ever since I started MKX, it was my goal to learn and main Cassie. Her personality, hair, outfit, voiceover, it all just screamed a character for me.

Countless upon countless lab hours trying to get the run cancel down after flip kick. And countless upon countless hours for all her other stuff, losing a ridiculous number of games. Then finally, I felt comfortable enough with her to call her my main. It was actually kind of a sense of pride because I never took fighting games seriously and I felt I mastered running mid-combo and Cassie's execution early. Initially I focussed on Brawler, then transitioned to Hollywood cause people said it was better and then finally decided I love Spec Ops. Played in a few online tournaments I found and did decently, and nobody else used the variation, I loved it.

Problem was, I got bored. No one knew the matchup so I could run gimmicks all day and steal games. I never learned a proper neutral, I just learned how to run up, throw out a 50/50 into EX flipkick and setup an overhead/low after. I rarely played defensive and never learned how to because she basically had the touch of death. I felt like I never learned anything playing as her, so I went back to hollywood. By that time though Hollywood was the same, only now I nutpunched instead of a hard-to-blockable and the execution was easier (outside of IAG).

Since then I've bounced around the whole cast, but I think it might be finally time I go back given the robot balls that were just neutered off my flair (funny cause my last comment was how I thought the nerfs weren't bad... well that was when we only knew of 2, not the 18 in the patch notes).

I'm not dropping shaolin. The ex chakram scare earlier got me thinking of what made other people decide to drop their mains.
Kung Jin is achar that he doesn't need nerfs to be dropped, his terrible mids are the only reason IMO.So multiple loses against the half of the cast is a reason to drop him, what do you think?

Just play Ferra/Torr.
Relish in the buffs.
And if they actually nerf Ferra/Torr a little then what?
It doesn't seem bad on paper.

Until you realize the paper yours is written on is a bazooka bubble gum wrapper and the paper everyone elses' is written on is artisan crafted from ancient papyrus used by the great kings and blessed by the gods.
I think it is really not about the character at this point, with this comment that you maded clearly it is more of the player.

After yesterday's patch I don't think shaolin has a losing matchup. Bojutsu might do better in the Jason matchup but he doesn't get the spacing from the elbow drop hard knockdown to keep his turn. You either reset to neutral after ending in bo swing or you sacrifice damage for the hard knockdown. Shaolin's optimal damage ender is a hard knockdown and gives him his next setup. His b1(low) and instant ji1 (mid) are good enough for me to overlook lack of fast mids or advancing strings. Shaolin might be top 5 now because of the nerfs that other characters received.

You bring up another reason why I wanted to know why people dropped their main. You really liked the character. I understand being bored because after a while you go into autopilot and might as well flip a coin in the beginning to get the same amount of satisfaction as winning or disappointment of losing. I get that and you probably want a little change to keep things fresh but Cassie is still your character. It seems that other people like winning more than having a connection with the character and once they feel like someone else is easier to win with they bounce. To me that sounds like they are missing out on most of the fun that MK gives me because they never connect with any character and that means they never really connect with the game.

What this quote said. We were just ignored, completely ignored, the Scar win against Sonic Fox didn't help either.

And the pain is real, you know you like the variation, but its mostly umplayable with what was left now, getting a hit with hat trick when related to hatarang HCB or blocked HCB is like playing a Slot machine.

Basically there is no guarantee you'll win because any conversion on Hit is randomized by the games mechanics, either you launch them, but they float too low, either you hit them, but your next guaranteed hit sometimes gets blocked due a bug, and that is just the bugs without counting in character balance.
Paulo has made it so that learning a character is like playing a slot machine

Just wanted to chime in on this train of thought. I've been playing F/T since day1 one and I still fucking love it, and honestly have never felt the need to really pick up another character. Everything about this character is so satisfying, Straight up tanking shit with armour and massive damage with PnG. Making some characters zoning attempts laughable, they call it "Boss" Toos for a reason, in Vicious, and lackey is just in a little league of his own, free armour, projectile invincibility, and a dirty little vortex of his own.

If you're looking to spice things up and want some real satisfaction I highly encourage you to try them.

My blade is broken damn right better than yours!
I dropped Kenshi about 3 hours ago after playing him since release. The last patch notes removed any doubt from my mind that NRS doesn't care about Kenshi in the slightest. At this point I'm honestly sick of my own bitching and don't want my salt to turn me into a crappy person for the rest of the games life. Tomorrow is a new day for me, not 100% on who I will play but the most appealing to least appealing candidates that I would be willing to play are:

1. Shinnok (All variants)
2. Tremor (Crystal and AShock)
3. Ermac (MoS)

PlatypusVortex

15 time Evo champion
I mained imposter shinnok since launch. I really didn't plan on playing him but i loved mk4 when i was a kid and thought it was cool to see him back. I just dicked around with him for fun but noticed i did better with him than anyone else so i stuck with him. Unfortunately he never really felt right for me. Just not the right fit. I played him up until December though while i tried to find another character and got pretty into liu kang for a while but he wasn't quite right either.

Finally after trying him many times over the months i picked up reptile. I don't know what it was but for some reason he just clicked one day. Hes been my favorite character since mk2 and i couldn't be happier that he fits my playstyle so well in this game.

I havent touched shinnok since i started with reptile. I just never had that much fun with him.

So in conclusion, Reptile is S+ tier..... In my heart.

kinda dropped tempest / buzzsaw cause +7 hat made his mindgames weak and you'll end up giving up your turn anyways, unless you take high risk / low reward decisions... he has rather slow buttons, and his walk / walkback speed sucks so you cant use his whiff punish tools properly

thinking about playing both Deceptive and Cutthroat

cutthroat looking good to me

Ive been through alot lol. I was a Kano main then he got butchered, buffed, nerfed and is currently solid so Im back. I was a Cassie main for a long time but Ive kind of dropped her at this point. Her last nerfs hit her hard imo, even if it just is my playstyle that i can use anymore as her. The flip kick nerf made her much more susceptable to pressure which that threat of the reversal is what made her strong in the first place. Her strings arent particularly good and shes one of the easier characters in the game to zone, no 6f poke, ect. Im still very salty about that shit since she turned into one of my favorite chars lol.....

Ive also co-mained Kotal since the games early months and have stuck with him. I dont think hes ever been nerfed, just had sun god buffed a few times. Hes pretty damned solid with only a couple bad mus imo

Colest

Mid-Tier 'Mancer Main
I was playing Cryomancer and it wasn't lack of buffs or nerfs so much that got me to drop him as a main so much as he's too honest and has too few tricks to enjoy playing IMO. His gameplan can't be adapted much between opponents and it just gets really old seeing that Cold Blooded string 4-6 times a match.

give me the lowdown
1) safe / plus 50/50s that can be confirmed to 40% for a bar midscreen + corner carry + oki

2) safe mid (db1) that sets you up a 50/50 on hit, f21xxdb1 is a true blockstring as well as b12xxdb1

3) stupid corner game where you can lose 50%+ of your life from a 50/50

4) good projectile, plus ex projectile that jails into a d3 / d4

5) really good buttons overall such as 7f pokes, 12f advancing mid, and good punishes with 8f s1 + a godlike bdash

6) safe armour (ex db2)

7) instant OH (air ball)

Do you play on Xbox or PS4? I find the +7 EX hat nerf to be very overrated, maybe I'll agree with you if I can fight a good Tempest and see how it has changed him.

Its never too late, my dude. Sure you coulda been getting buffed and rolling in sweet tech from the get-go, but I mean hopping in a year later still isn't too bad.
I still main bae-rax aka cyrax, but i am thinking about playing ferra/torr as a secondary. I may as well join the ferra/torr players with their +10 on block overhead ferra/toss mixups.
